unwelcome encounters { cygnus + ted }

Whenever he had the time after work, Ted liked to venture to Diagon Alley to find something new to bring him to his daughter, or his wife. Even if it was something small, he loved to see the look on his face when he gave it to them. He was raised with the idea of spoiling the people you love randomly, as a way to show them you are always thinking about them.

It was often that this quest would lead him to Flourish and Blotts, as his daughter was now getting more into reading as she grew older. Wracking his brains as he walked through the aisles, he knew that Andy might like a new book as well. He was so engrossed in the bookshelves to find what he was looking for, that he found himself blocked to get out of the aisle by an all too familiar, and rather unwelcome face.

Ted cleared his throat, unsure of how to get around the man without having to interact. To be fair, he was unsure that the man would even recognize him, never having really looked him in the face because of his ingrained bigotry. If he did recognize him, he knew that his evening was about to take a turn for the worst.

teasing { greta + ted }

Early Fall Term, Sixth Year Hufflepuff Common Room, 1:00am

Ted enjoyed his time being single. He liked not being tied down to one person, able to explore any opportunity that arose. What he did not enjoy were those pesky feelings for a certain dark haired Slytherin girl not going away. And that seemed to be why he found himself up late, trying to find ways to keep his mind off of her.

Distractions had become his favorite thing these days.

Sitting on one of the big, comfy couches in the quiet, deserted common room, Ted found himself unable to sleep and instead was working on some homework just to keep his mind busy.

Being alone was a blessing and a curse.

His quietness and concentration was broken by footsteps heading toward the room. Out of one of the doorways came the figure of Greta Catchlove. The moment the two realized they weren’t alone, a smirk crossed the girl’s face.

“What has you up at this hour, Catchlove?” he asked, arm resting on the back of the couch.

a strike of fear { andy + ted }

The house was far too still.

His typical greeting when he came home from work was a screech and little arms enveloping his legs in a hug. But that was not what happened when he opened the door. Instead, he was greeted with a far too clean living room, and silence.

“Andy? Dora?” he called, taking off his cloak and placing it on its hook.

Panic began to set in when there was no immediate reply, causing him to swiftly head to his bedroom, wondering if she was there and didn’t tell him. She would have left a note if she and Dora would have been out when he got home from work, but there was no stray parchment from what he could tell.

“Andy!” he called again as he grew closer to the room. The door was slightly open, a faint light flickering from inside. “Love?” he asked, pushing the door open further so he could enter the room.

The sight before him made his stomach sink. He hadn’t seen his wife look so panicked since her parents had made her choose between them and him. Nearly running to the bed, he sat beside her and had his arm around her and Dora, who was in her arms asleep. Pushing her hair back from her face, Ted kissed her gently.

“What’s happened? What’s wrong, my darling?”

Leaving the country as abruptly as she had following the - shocking - events of Christmas was, admittedly, not one of the most intelligent things Septima could have done. Remaining to help with the aftermath of the Minister’s murder and ensure things stayed on track, that was what she should have done – but the offer had come through, and it wasn’t something she could just ignore. Joseph would have wanted her to experience Africa. At least that was what she continually told herself.
As it was, more often than not there were very few who seemed to be impacted by the absence of Septima Vector during her trips away. As it was, she often remained convinced even those she did miss on her trips were barely phased when she left. Quite a lonely life she was beginning to lead, hard as she attempted to hide it.
“Unless anyone steps forward with a different plan, then I don’t suppose there is anything else that we can do.” The comment fell easily from her lips, barely needing a thought to confirm it was an acceptable thing to say. She had always respected the Tonks family, Andromeda in particular. It took a brave woman to do as she had done, and the family and woman she’s reconstructed for herself was an admirable one at that.
“I can only imagine.” Young as their child was, Septima was aware of how intelligent Nymphadora was, even if her parents (understandably) didn’t want to admit it. Nymphadora Tonks was a beautifully intelligent child, and Septima understood the urge to protect her – maternal instincts had never truly possessed her, but there was a level of affection to be held for the little girl. “I’m sure she’ll enjoy her time with your mother, nevertheless.”
“If not here yet, I’m sure that she will be soon, Ted.” She offered, hoping to tame the nerves she could see clearly taking over the man already. “Though I do have means of contact if you’d like to borrow one, if we don’t see her soon.”

It had been a tough road for some members of Aversio after the Christmas events. Many had come to him, questioning if they had been right, or if they were becoming too jaded and extremist. While he did not believe in murder, he believed deeply in the cause. He was happy to step in and reel everyone back to the main objective, and moving forward instead of dwelling on what had happened. Now with Septima back, he was grateful for her steady presence and mind keeping them forward.

“And isn’t that why we’re all gathered here? I know there are many that think we need another big strike, but I think we need to really think this time,” he said quietly, not wanting anyone to think he was questioning them. He felt safe discussing this with her, and she had a similar mind to his own, and could understand the concerns that he would have. Many of the younger members had been all for a bigger plan, a demonstration of sorts. But Ted knew that that alone was not the way to go about any of this, that patience would be required. “But yes, until then, that is all we can do.”

“Oh, she’ll more than just enjoy it. She’s the only grandchild at the moment, and has become quite accustomed to the spoiling that that grants her,” he said with a laugh. He was truly grateful for the effort his parents were making with his daughter. Having explained the situation of Andromeda’s family to her, they had taken it upon themselves to make sure that Dora felt loved and knew that her family was always there for her, even if they happened to live in different worlds.

Ted smiled warmly at her, nodding slightly. “I know, but I always get worried when I don’t know where she is. Especially in these conditions,” he admitted. Having run into his sister-in-law lately, he had become increasingly worried about Andy running into her less savory family members. “That would be great, but let’s give it a few more minutes, yeah?”

She had thought Christmas was bad. Silly, almost childlike naivety to believe Aversio’s ideals couldn’t get worse than killing the Minister. A necessary evil it may have been, but the uprising hells it had drawn the Order had been sickening, a thing she detested even still. Opposed as she may have been to the plan of murder her voice hadn’t won out. Sometimes the worst choices were necessary. And yet, even so the events of Christmas had nothing on what she had returned to following New Year’s. In her brief weeks away, it seemed things in war had only continued a steady decline and it needed to come to an end. The amount of innocent blood which was being spilt left very little to appreciate as darkness only continued a steady descent upon London.
Reserved a woman as she was - as she had been in the past year - with the current situation of things, such luxuries couldn’t be afforded. Septima Vector was a smart woman, who knew being alone would not win the war. It took strategies and communication, it took loyalty and devotion regardless of how much she’d lost.
And so she played her part. Carefully teetering, cleverly toeing the line dividing the Order and Aversio’s rebel forces. Both sides fought for the same thing. To fight each other when the true enemy was clear seemed idiotic yet an unfortunate truth. Sometimes drastic measures must be taken and if Joseph’s death proved anything, that was certainly it.
“I’ve seen better days, but I suppose we all have.” She admitted, an ever slight shrug raising her shoulders before the corner of her mouth tugged upwards, just a hint. “I appreciate that, Ted, thank you.” It was rare for anyone to leave a mess of her home, when a visitor. Septima Vector commanded respect, but Ted was a nice man, a considerate one and she couldn’t find it in herself to be rude
“That is a shame. Your little girl always brings a bit more light to my evenings. Though I suppose perhaps for such things it’s best she isn’t witness to our gatherings.” It was difficult to find the right phrase. Many made it sound as if Aversio was an army, a cult. Perhaps they were.
“Andromeda is here as well? I can’t say I’ve seen her yet…then again, everyone seems to have shown up tonight.”
Image
Since the events of Christmas, Ted had been one of the members calculating next moves. With that lash back from the Minister’s murder, some had started to listen to him more, though many still saw what happened as a victory. Ted could not see how the loss of a life could be considered one.

Meeting in personal homes was a risk, but after the events of Christmas, they had to keep moving locations. They couldn’t leave any trace behind, and just meeting under the pretense of friends over for dinner was the safest cover for them.

Septima was one of the members of Aversio that Ted had instantly liked, but also she also was a woman that he admired. He liked the way he carried herself, and knew when remain stoic. He only wished he had that sort of control over his emotions. Ted had always been an open book, unable to hide if he was worried or nervous about anything.

Nodding, he gave her a small, knowing smile. “And yet we all move forward, yeah? Fight for the good time ahead, the one we’re all fighting for.” That was what kept Ted going, knowing that he was fighting for a future for his family, so that Dora would not have to deal with a world worried each day whether or not her friends and loved ones would survive.

“That, and my mother finds any opportunity she can to spoil her,” Ted said, hiding the fact that he agreed with her. As she grew older, more aware of her surroundings and what was happening, he did his best to shield her from her parent’s involvement. At least until she was able to fully comprehend what was happening and could form her own opinions.

Scanning the room around them, he tried to find where his wife was. “Yes, I told her to meet me here, since I was a little late at the office. She maybe a little late too.” He hoped she was already there, nerves already pinching in his stomach when he could not find her in the crowd. “I’m sure she’ll be here any moment, she hates being late to these meetings.

boy’s night { marcus + ted }

He smirked, playing with his bottle of beer between his hands. “You think I would tell Andy on you? One, I am your friend, friends don’t do that to each other and two… you know better than the rest of us how scary your wife can be. I’m not going to unleash that on you” he said, shaking his head. “Unless you piss me off” he added, winking at his friend, who would probably punch him for even teasing the threat and he wouldn’t blame him either. Andromeda was one of his favourite relatives, but she had the classic Black family trait of being scary as hell when she wanted to be. “That would be hilarious, I want that to happen. I can take pictures and put them up everywhere as a warning to men who work too late” he laughed, running a hand through his shaggy hair.
“Unfortunately, no-one would pull me from my office, I actually slept in there the other night. I fell asleep at my desk and didn’t wake up until five in the morning” he admitted. That had been a terrible night’s sleep and he had gotten a crick in his neck for it. “Even I know that, I am related to her biological uncles, remember?” he asked, his eyes widening slightly. “The whole blood is thicker than water thing, which is probably why most purebloods are idiots or insane… is not at all true”.
“Thank you Ted, and hey, if you and Andy ever want a night to yourself and need a babysitter, I will always make myself free. It’ll give me a reason to actually leave my desk at night” he smirked. He enjoyed spending time with Nymphadora, she was a funny child. He was glad when his friend didn’t comment of the marriage and he quickly moved on from the subject - it wasn’t pleasant for either of them and would only dampen the mood. He knew who Andromeda had been betrothed to, or had been about to be and he wondered if Ted knew as well. He groaned, “I, Marcus McKinnon am falling for Sybill Trelawney” he said, taking a swig of his beer. “And I don’t have a fucking clue what to do about it”.
A chuckle escaped his throat as Marcus spoke. They both loved his wife dearly, in their own ways, but that also meant that they knew her well. Ted was glad to at least have someone in the family, even if not all that closely related, that accepted him and made him feel like family. It was reassuring to him that he hadn’t cut her off from everyone by being a muggleborn. “Alright, fair enough, McKinnon. Let’s both do our best not to piss the other or my wife off, yeah?”

Ted shot him a sympathetic look. “It’s not all its chalked up to be. Have you ever seen my wife angry? Its subtle, yet scary when you know the look she’s giving you.” There were not many times he had seen that side of her, mostly because he hated the way she looked at him when she was angry and never wanted to put himself in that position. Taking a swig of his whiskey, he nodded. “Done that before, before Andy and I were married. Not fun.” Letting out a humorless laugh, he raised his eyebrows in acknowledgement. “Yeah, you’ve had to deal with them longer than I have. More power to you, mate. But know that we do consider you, and Marlene, family.”

“Always, mate,” he replied with a grin. “You may have to fight my mother for babysitting duties. I swear, sometimes when I leave her with mum, I worry I may not get her back. But I’ll tell her its for a good cause of making sure my mate leaves his office,” he chuckled. Ted could not believe that of all people Marcus could have found, he had fallen for an Aversio member. That prompted him to worry how much the younger man knew about the group, and if the girl had said anything. Filing it away in his brain, he made a mental note to ask the girl about it at the next meeting. Putting a stupid grin on his face, he squeezed Marcus’s shoulder. “That’s not something to groan about, my friend. That’s something to celebrate. And the first two things would be: a) have you told her how you feel, and b) does she feel the same about you?”

safe haven

It truly seemed a miracle, how genuinely kind Mr. Blotts had been to Daisy in the time that had come to pass since the loss of her family. She’d been gifted with so much time off it almost felt as if he had bent some rule for her benefit. (Which, she was almost certain he had, to an extent.)
While the reprieve had been much needed to help her heal, it was becoming a bit unbearable. Her friends had been nothing if not wholeheartedly there, but Pandora and Lucinda had their own lives. Sisters the three may have been, and yet even Daisy understood she needed to be tougher. Solely relying on them wasn’t fair.
How she truly brought herself to their doorstep was still a bit of a mystery. Andy and Ted were good people, some of the best Daisy had found herself being fortunate enough to meet. They were a genuine sort of people. Without even being exposed to the entire story of Andromeda’s past, Daisy knew without a doubt that theirs was the sort of love she wanted. Whether it would come about in experience, or her stories…well, that was the question of it all, wasn’t it?
The very moment that the door opened, Daisy’s face brightened, her pain melting away just at the mere sight of Nymphadora. If books couldn’t cure her of her grief, Ted’s daughter certainly never ceased to - if only for brief moments.
“I hope I’m not intruding,” the words escaped quickly, green eyes lifting from Dora only briefly to look towards Tonks. All break from Dora was short-lived, the little girl tugging at her excitedly. “Yes, Dora, I’m here!” Daisy exclaimed, kneeling down to hug the child as best she could with the squirming. “I’ve certainly missed you, too.”
Image
Ted wasn’t quite sure how it happened, but the Tonks’ home had become a sort of refuge for Aversio members. Perhaps it was merely that his daughter could put a smile on anyone’s face, but they always seemed to come when they need to get away. When they need to forget for just a bit. And that seemed to be growing more and more as time in Aversio went on.

And still, hearing the knock on the door had been a small shock to him, even though they had become more frequent with time. Thankful that he had thought to throw a sweater on, he still felt a chill as he stood in front of the open door.

Being home all day, even with his daughter there, Ted was happy for the company the young redhead brought. He was more than happy that his female friends were around to give Dora strong female role models; paired with her mother, it would hopefully make her stronger as she grew older.

“Daisy Hookum, you are never intruding! Come on in, how does tea sound?” he laughed, looking fondly down at the two them. Dora excitedly wrapped her arms around Daisy, squealing happily. “Miss Daisy, are you here to color with me?”

Laughing heartily, Ted took his daughter by the hand to guide her back in the house. “Let’s get Daisy in from the cold, warm her up and then you two can play, darling.” Smiling at the older girl, he ushered her into the house. “How’ve you been, love? It’s been far too long since I’ve seen you for personal matters,” he teased her lightly, not mentioning the word Aversio around his daughter.
