At large, the kingdom of Marena believes itself to be uniquely chosen to play a great role in its region's history, for it is the home of the last dragon of the world.

The Weaver lives in the temple built for her in the mountains, at the edge of the Forest. Her priestesses are the only ones allowed to meet her, unless some special circumstances call for her intervention.

What is considered special, of course, depends entirely on the whim of an old being whose goals are not quite comprehensible to the humans who worship it.

The King and Queen of Marena were unable to bear children, and yet sorely needed an heir. They prayed, and went on a pilgrimage to the holy place in the mountains, and sacrificed all they could think of, and begged the Weaver to help them.

Soon, they were ushered in to see her.

And there, in the heart of the mountain, in front of an altar of carved rock and gems, the Weaver was facing them, and asked them to tell her their woes once again. And when they spoke of their need for a child and their despair at not having one, she nodded. And her clawed, scaled hand that was larger than a house opened flat, and produced a newborn.

"You shall care for this child, and remember that I am the one who bestowed it upon you, and that it will shape the fabric of the world."

The couple stared for a few seconds at their perfect, divine baby. Then the Queen took it in her arms, and the King wept when the little girl smiled at him.

They thanked the Weaver profusely, professing their unending love and loyalty to her, making a thousand promises that the dragon did not quite care for.

She watched them leave with her own offspring, eyes soft, wishing the baby dragon luck on realizing its own story. After all, her tale was only a beginning for the young one's.
