Isabella gives the other a nod, “I am” She takes the phone from the other and looks down at it. In her heart she knew this was a bad idea but she needed this recipe. “Alright, alright. I’m hoping she won’t. You’ve got to promise me that if she has no idea, you have to help me” She grins.
Sofia rolled her eyes, but nodded. “When my mom has no idea how to help you, I’ll help. Maybe I could call your mom. She might tell me.” Sofia knew the reason Isabella wouldn’t call her own mother, but it was hard to turn down someone who wasn’t related to her.
“I mean, we both saw that I could take risks,” Dawn suggested with a shrug. “Why can’t you?” Dawn, though she had settled down quite a bit since her younger days, was never one to think twice. She did what she wanted and questioned later, obviously the other girl wasn’t the same.
“Because I’ma fan of controlled risks. Risks inside the ring when I can guess the outcome. I’m not good at this. These kinds of risks end with a different kind of hurt.” Unless she was boxing, Sofia was an overthinker - everyone who knew her would happily point that out. It didn’t make it possible or easy to stop being that way. She was even more of an overthiker when she was moving into uncharted territory - like kissing another woman.
“That would be because I’m really, really far from home,”
“Is there anyone here who isn’t really really far from home? Either literally or metaphorically?”

Drudged Up Past
It was crazy to think that the one person that Charlie thought would always be by her side was now practically a stranger in front of her. If she hadn’t just happened to bump into the brunette, she wouldn’t even have recognized her in passing. They could have gone the entire reunion without even speaking a word to each other, yet there they were.
But nothing was the same now; even in the simplest form, they looked older. Just the other day, Charlie had even found gray hairs; it had only been ten years since leaving high school and her life was tremendously stressful. In addition to the fact that there were now three children that she had to raise, there were the many notable financial issues that she had ever since Kyle’s funeral expenses were due.
Time, though, had seemed to be rather nice to Ainsley. She looked almost identical to how she did in high school, which was lovely for her; though it caused an odd feeling to develop in the pit of Charlie’s stomach.
“Hi. I’m good, quite good. Genevieve is already trying to walk, but Tyler is not happy about the fact he will have to share a room with Nicholas once Gen gets a bit bigger.” She rambled slightly, going on about her children which probably wasn’t at all what the other had been asked about, but what difference was there in how she was doing compared to her kids? They were her life now.
“Uhm, anyways, what about you? How are you? It does seem like a long time since we’ve last talked, unfortunately.”
Ainsley had heard of course that Charlie was a mother now, but she didn’t know anything about them or her former best friend’s family. It didn’t take long to learn their names though. Charlie was ever the same and rambled when she was nervous. The sound of the other’s woman voice, and her endless chatter was comforting, familiar. Something Ainsley hadn’t even known she was missing until she was given the experience again.
“Uh...that’s not really what I asked, but um...I’m glad your kids are doing good.” Glancing down at the woman finger, she asked the obvious question. “Where’s your other half tonight?” She’d never met the man. When the invitation to Charlie’s wedding came, she’d put it on her fridge, but she had never sent back the RSVP card, so she hadn’t gone to the wedding. It was a decision she regretted, but until tonight, she had made a mostly clean break from the person she was in high school and without a doubt, that was the best decision she could have made for herself.
“It’s been years, but we’ve been busy. Life happens.” She shrugged, dismissing it as though it wasn’t a big deal. As though there were warring parts of her that were at the same time glad and immensely regretting the distance and the years between the two of them. “I’m good. The world keeps turning. I keep writing. It’s good.”
“Okay,” Cody huffed, his shoulders shrugging right after. “And I’lll help, because we are in this together. You know where I stand in this, and I know where you do, but I still want you to know, that I’m going to support you when you’re trying to make this work. If it doesn’t, then we’ll just have to figure it out from there.”
She nodded because she did. He’d made it clear for weeks exactly where he stood. And though it seemed they both had softened on where they stood as far as their relationship, things were still complex. “We know where it goes if it doesn’t work.” If it came to that, she would make her peace with it, because he was respecting her choices, but without a doubt, it would hurt.
Charles was worst this than he last remembered, he couldn’t figure out how others socialized so easily and hold up a conversation for what seem liked hours maybe it was him, talking always came hard for him. He was thankful when Jayden spoke. “ Oh I’ve been a librarian at this school for 5 years now before I used to work in a library down town and that was… 4 years I guess.” He smiled.” How about yourself Jayden? How long have you been a teacher?”
Jay kept his smile light, silently encouraging the other man to talk, to share at his own pace. “Oh no, I’m not a teacher.” He had a degree in special education, but he wasn’t exactly a teacher, not in the way most people thought of teaching as. “I’m more an advocate for students who are in special education. Either because they have a label or because they’re working toward it. I do a lot of work with families, and then with teachers and admins to make sure a student’s needs are met in the best way possible.” He did some teaching, but it was rare and generally only happened if someone specifically asked him to. “Why make the transition from a public library to here? Like what was the draw?”
creating a tagging system is so time consuming. Probably because i’m the queen of overthinking.
