Jessica read through the files on her computer one after another. She couldn’t believe the things that she was seeing or how deep the conspiracy went. Her client’s husband, the man who kept disappearing on little trips every few weeks, was part of a network. A network that seemed to stretch to every corner of the globe and every country therein. From what little she could make out amidst all of the classified names and locations, the husband was a spy for an organization that was located in New York which murdered high value targets for its clients – corrupt Saudi princes, Russian spymasters who went rogue and left the motherland, Swedish bankers who made their millions with one hand and dealt in human trafficking with the other.
As the afternoon light dimmed into an evening glow, Jessica wondered what she was going to tell her client or how she would be able to explain to the woman what her husband did for a living. She felt heat on her face and sweat was gathering on the palms of her hands. She wondered if someone from this agency knew who she was, what she was doing, or her contact on the web – a hacker who called herself Wasp.
She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and opened the document through which she communicated with the other woman. <Thanks for the docs.> She tapped out. <What am I supposed to do with all of this stuff?>

her eyes are tired. there’s a half-flat can of coke at the side of her desk, three pizza crusts and an ashy array of cigarette butts pressed into the empty plate, but her eyes are still tired. (she’s been staring at the screen for the past sixteen hours. she’s burnt through each cigarette to keep her awake.) one file links to the next and before she knows it, there’s a webbed tale of deceit, murder and rape. (there’s always rape. men are all fucking sadist pigs.)

               <Whatever you want.>

go to the police. don’t go to the police. murder the fucking bastards responsible for this. don’t. the fact of the matter is that she’ll spend the next few months dodging armansky’s calls and keeping her head buried in the same clutter of files that enticed her in in the first place, and find how deep the web really goes. whether her new york contact wants to or not is not up to her.

<Not the police. I’m working on that. Something there too.>

something there is another word for they’re all fucking perverts. (they’ll go down. one way or another. in stockholm, she has blomkvist - millennium will turn anyone inside out if she feeds them enough information. this one, however, she has to figure out without his smarmy git face involved.)

pain and death don’t mean shit anymore. (they haven’t for a while. there’s the smell of gasoline that simmers beneath the arch of her nostril and the rage under her skin that’s more than a spark to ignite it. you can sit and cry about the world or do something about it.)

what flares anger, and pain, and unadulterated fucking spite is that he has nothing to fear. the dark streets of stockholm are nothing to a man with more muscle mass than she has computer memory. (she cursed herself, there and then, for being what she is. she’d be left alone if she was anything else. fuck you.)

image
she doesn’t look up. her fingers barely still against the keyboard and she keeps those dark eyes fixed entirely at the computer screen. the line at the end of her text blinks once, twice, another before she blindly reaches for the case file buried under the pile of clutter and an empty coke can or two, and she hurls it toward him.

what have you got to be afraid of? catch the file. read it. rape. murder. there’s a sadist for all fucking seasons and here he is - the chilly fucking winter and a collection of crime scene photos to add to it.

                  “i don’t give a shit what you’re afraid of.”

@hamndgirig -- post season 2 starter-call. ( Accepting )
HER TEETH CLICK TOGETHER. This silent work of her jaw. Her apartment felt too ———– QUIET. She’s not one to mind this, normally, but frankly – she’d gotten use to Malcolm’s buzzing annoyance. To having someone else’s presence.
So – she goes out for a WALK. The thought is bitter. This kind-of ugly thing, with annoyance behind it.
Image
( They say running and walking helps with TRAUMA – she still thinks it’s bullshit. There’s no self-help book titled: for-when-your-mother-who-you-thought-was-dead-comes-back-to-life-as-a-raging-murderer-and-then-is-later-shot-by-your-best-friend. Try looking that one up in the library. )
It does help – kind of. Fresh air and all that bullshit. But so does slamming her fist into walls of abandoned buildings. But she’s TRYING not to do that. But –
( A benign external action to soothe internal strife. )
It HELPS. Kicking at pieces of rubble far away from people instead of going to a bar and drinking and getting into fights. Less of a chance of ACCIDENTALLY MURDERING SOMEONE.
Unless if some IDIOT decides to come poking around here.
I wouldn’t recommend coming over here. She hears the footsteps over the clatter of stone. Her knuckles are bloody but it’s fine. Rubble could crush your skull.

she’s slow. and quiet. the faint click of her lighter meets the end of her cigarette, before quickly being pocketed away.

lisbeth salander does not like people. company is a liberty she doesn’t care for; they give her headaches. nausea. there’s something about people that makes her skin itch and her fingers flex til there’s something else to do. she spends her life trying to avoid at all cost, seconds from packing up her mac and going to live off the archipelago in a remote summer cabin that blomkvist keeps for his vacation days.

--- yet she sees the silhouette tucked beneath the back of a hoodie and she still watches. waits. (jones, jessica. thirty two. private investigator. spends too much on alcohol and too little on anything else. does not play well with others.)

“it won’t.”   her research hasn’t been as thorough as she’d like, but the city’s beginning to wear on her a little. (she remembers how stockholm suffocates her. she remembers the way kalle fucking blomkvist had his hand around her throat without even knowing it. fuck you, kalle blomkvist.) it won’t, because there’s a woman who can pick the rubble up and crush it there and then. it won’t, because there’s only a bottle of whiskey and intense, burning fucking hate between them. or maybe there’s not.

Image
she’s not here to stop her -- she eyes the knuckles with the same blank stare she regards everything with and takes a long drag on the cigarette. your hands will sting when the adrenaline wears off is what she avoids, and even though she stands at 4′11″, 90lbs with matchstick arms, her next words are only confident and flat:

“i can take care of myself.”

(she may not be powered, but she’ll get the fuck back up until her kneecaps shatter.)

“what do you know about human trafficking in this city?”

the gun sits heavy on the desk between them. her legs rest against it, one ankle crossed over the other and stray specks of dirt pool on the table beneath her feet. the lights are dim, and the windows closed, but saIander still stares with the same pointed curiosity that brought her toward this in the first place.

she’s invested most of wennerström’s money, and the rest is split from accounts in grenada to wasp enterprises in stockholm itself. she’s still tanned, a little - there’s a stretch of bare skin around her wrist, a cuff that’s paler than the rest of her from the watch that now sit sin a bare hotel room somewhere in the back of the city. new york is different - loud, bustling, and there are still stares every now and then that make her tighten her jaw and glare back. but it’s different, and being torn from one busy city to another is just the distraction she needs.

fuck you kaIIe bIomkvist. (she’s not sure why he still brings such a vehement reaction. she’s not sure why there’s a reaction at all.) but now he’s half way across the world and she finds distraction in knowing that men are the same, whether it be in stockholm, tallinn, or a city in a completely different country.

image
the gun isn’t meant for her. saIander’s eyes drop to it for a moment, before training themselves back on the other. (it reminds her of martin fucking vanger, and the scent of blood mixed with tequila while she stitched mikael back together. the chamber’s empty, but it’s still there.)

her legs slide down, press flat against the floor, and she draws a case file from inside her rucksack. it’s bound in a standard yellow envelope, containing two-hundred pages, appendices, bank statements and phone history, and she drops it against the desk.

“look at this. i’ll leave a number you can contact me on.”

“lisbeth, we have to call the police.”
“no,”  she replied with such vehemence that blomkvist opened his eyes in surprise.   “if you call the police, i’m leaving.  i don’t want to have anything to do with them.  martin vanger is dead.  he died in a car accident.  he was alone in the car.  there are witnesses.  let the police or someone else discover that fucking torture chamber.  you and i are just as ignorant about its existence as everyone else in this village.”
