Write Your Story

I just showed my 11-year-old son how many coffee shop AUs there are on AO3.

Why?

He sat down the other day to write a Minecraft story about three kids who go through a portal in their back yard and end up in the world of Minecraft where they have to battle all the big bosses (I didn’t even realize there WERE big bosses in Minecraft but that’s beside the point). He wrote three chapters with a little input from me – his first beta – and y'all?

He was fucking excited. To be writing a story.

Today he came home from school and seemed a little down, so I asked him about it only to find out that some little asshole at his school told him, “There is already a Minecraft story.”

Me: Okay? So what?

Lucifer: If there’s already a story, no one will read mine.

Immediately, I dragged him in and pulled up my AO3 account. My boys know I write fanfiction, so I showed him my account and how many subscribers I have. Then I showed him how many Teen Wolf stories there are. And then, because it seemed like the perfect analogy, I said, “What if I wrote a story where two characters meet in a coffee shop and fall in love? No werewolves, nothing at all to do with the actual Teen Wolf universe. Just Stiles and Derek meet in a coffeeshop and fall in love.”

He laughed.

I showed him Mornings Aren’t For Everyone. Showed him how many hits it had, how many kudos, how many lovely comments.

Then I said, “So do you think, if anyone else wrote a story about those exact same characters meeting in a coffee shop and falling in love… would anyone read it?”

He laughed and said, “No because you already did.”

So I clicked on the Sterek tag and refined to coffee shop AU. His mind was blown to see that they ALL had thousands of hits and kudos and comments. Then I clicked on JUST the coffee shop AU tag and showed him all the fics across all the fandoms written by countless different people.

I’m going to tell you all now what I told him because it applies to everyone.

Write your story. It doesn’t matter that someone else has written a story about that subject. They didn’t write YOUR story. Only you can do that.

And I want to read your story.

Holy crap, this is A+ parenting and such a good lesson.

I don't want to ask AI a question. I don't want AI to write my sentences for me, at all ever. I don't want AI search bars to be the default and I don't want them to be in such a way that I can't opt out. I don't want this kind of AI in my life and there is no such thing as AI art, there is only theft of art from human artists by AI scrappers. I don't want any of this, I hate it. Maybe in a world that isn't driven by tech bro capitalism we can see machines doing all the dangerous inane things so humans can be free to pursue life and creativity. But that's not what's happening right now and I hate it.

The witches love to see all the familial fondness! Check out these community recs for some wonderful moments with some of favorite family members.

Golden Days (AWorldofDreams/ @a-noble-dragon) “The fall imagery and writing style is gorgeous! Marcy bakes pies for all her sweet boys, including Clint. It also features reminiscing over old photos and David basking in the Brewers' love for him.”

Growing Up Brewer (pandorasdaydream) “A big, beautiful, detailed world that is Patrick’s backstory. Marcy and Clint raised a remarkable, loving son. This fic tells us how that happened.”

“400k words of Marcy and Clint from when they started dating till they are old and gray. It’s a beautiful story!!”

He shines ( @smallumbrella369) “I love that it's from Marcy's point of view. I love how she loves her son and lets him grow.”

Real life fairytale ( @blackandwhiteandrose) "This is my favorite Brewer one shot, probably. I love the conversation that they have and everything that we learn through them talking and there's so much love and warmth and affection. It's a good read when you need a quick hit of happiness.”

Season with love ( @lastchancecafe) “I love nothing more than a David and Marcy fic and this one just hits my sweet spot right. Love and food and family.”

Stevie & Patrick are Buds ( @weathereyehorizon) “This series of seven short fics is a go-to for me. There’s antics and bestie-ism in peak form. Patrick and Stevie’s imbalanced social dynamic cannot be beat.”

we'll take the world together ( @landofsonlali) “This 5+1 sibling feels fic is a gut punch followed by a warm hug. It's amazing to think how much David & Alexis went through and how their relationship gets strengthened over time. I miss them!”

I am going to take a deep breath and just remind you:

Writing is messy, even for the best authors. It's supposed to feel a little uncomfortable, exhilarating, freeing, natural, and terrifying.

It's supposed to inspire you and feel like a too-heavy backpack.

Sometimes, you're going to love being a writer and sometimes, you'll feel so disconnected, you'll wonder if you were ever a writer to begin with.

Give yourself room to make mistakes and hate your work and return to it with renewed confidence that yes, you will get 1% better next time.

It's what we're all going through. Let's speed up the growing process a little by accepting the entirety of it.

Tease Tibit Tuesday

Thank you for the tag @ramonaflow 💐

It’s the smile that does it. David’s mouth, just slightly quirked to one side.  Small and shy and so intimate it pierces Patrick’s heart like an arrow. The softness has returned to David’s eyes and Patrick is certain he put it there.

Tuesday is about done so if you haven't played and you want to, consider yourself tagged!

20 Qs for Fic Writers

thanks for the tag @blackandwhiteandrose!

How many works do you have on ao3? 18

What's your total ao3 word count?

158,583

What fandoms do you write for?

I have only written for Schitt’s Creek

Top five fics by kudos:

  1. My Heart is like paper
  2. Bloom
  3. You are Gold
  4. Ocean and Sky
  5. The poem you make of me

Do you respond to comments?

Oh absolutely, I do! I always want to show my appreciation if someone takes the time to comment.

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I’m angst averse so I don’t write angsty endings!

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

All of the endings are happy.

Do you get hate on fics?

Fortunately, I have not.

Do you write smut?

Yup.

Craziest crossover:

I’ve not written a crossover

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not as far as I know.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

I have not.

Have you ever cowritten a fic before?

No. I’m not sure I have the disposition for it

All time favourite ship?

Forever and always - David & Patrick

What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Ooo I don’t like the word doubt.  I have a few that I want to finish and I struggle with each of them in different ways. And while it’s possible something may never be finished, I don’t want to say that I doubt I'll finish. I am going to try to finish all my wips.

What are your writing strengths?

I think I’m decent at emotional tone. And occasionally I can make a really pretty sentence.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Oof. Punctuation, commas in particular. I know I tend to over-write and often end a paragraph with a sentence that stomps on the previous ones. Oh, and I love a flowery description.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

I’ve only done it once. It’s fine?

First fandom you wrote in?

Schitt’s Creek

Favourite fic you've written?

Probably Heart/Paper. It’s a world I’d really love to live in, even if David and Patrick weren’t there. But I have a soft spot for each of my fics. Writing them brought me immense joy.
