// Would anyone be interested in interacting with Cubbi (Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears) if I added him to my muses?? Not on this blog, obviously, but elsewhere? I don't really have any kid-friendly-character type blogs except my Little Mermaid one, so maybe I'll turn that into a coverall Disney multi-muse... Ideas?

Vanessa is keenly aware that Jake is gifting her a beautiful compliment. While it is cherished, it lands with an unintended sting. A flash of a wince races across Rojas’s countenance. It’s the tiniest of recoils. If one would blink, one would surely miss it. Speaking her mind had made Rojas a problem in the past. She is just grateful he did not consider it grounds to find the nearest exit. He seemed to value it. “A blush?” She beams more radiantly than before. “You’re definitely excused.” She hadn’t thought Jake could become any more endearing, still he managed. “Damn, you even make shades of burgundy look good. I’m kinda jealous…”
image
“Is there anything you can’t do?” She playfully prods, fancying him as a jack-of-all-trades. Well, more of a Jake-of-all-trades.
Rojas nods. “When I get back from this trip, I’m going to be assigned to one of their cases,” she reveals softly. One never knew when conversations were being eavesdropped on. “Any tips on how to get on well with Tubbs and Sonny?” She questioned, tone conspiratorial. While Tubbs was essentially a Crockett now, everyone on the force continued to call her by her maiden name; if only to service as a matter of distinction between the two of them. Or maybe it was an old habit that never died for the rest of the unit. But knowing a brood of Crocketts, it is far too difficult to refer to them just by last name alone. She was already finding herself having a favorite among them, and he happened to be standing right next to her.
Every answer from Jake seems to stoke curiosity. A laborer. She stores that mental note away for later. She’s never known a man so devoted to the health, safety, and goodness of his nieces and nephews. Rojas is becoming keenly aware that this isn’t an act nor a pretense to get women. He was genuinely attached to them -life and limb- and they likewise. “Now, you do realize, I’m going to want to witness that workout routine one of these days,” she remarks half-teasingly.
“Sorry. I do ask a lot of questions.” It is a confirmation. “I became a detective because I wanted to matter. I wanted my life to matter. I needed my life to be different. Asking questions is just a perk of the job.” There’s a darkness dwelling in her charcoal orbs, a locker of secrets, of things she rarely ever gave voice too and elected not to speak about now. Rojas hadn’t always desired to walk the straight and narrow. She had accrued quite a record and would have been behind bars herself had another not taken her place. But she lets that train of thought dissolve in the light of the newly offered information from Jake. “How many years are between you both?” She once again prods. His life story deeply interests her. The smile she bore vanished as he relates a generalization of some of the miserable realities of family life. Those were things she could understand to a degree from her brief glimpses of family life. Were she to have a free hand, she would have pressed it to his shoulder. “I’m so sorry, Jake.” She supposed the perfect family was as elusive as a unicorn. “I … I didn’t mean to bring up bad memories.” Vanessa nods, understanding. “That’s okay. Maybe we can learn about it together,” she offers. Subconsciously offering him another avenue of dependability she’s not even sure she has a right to.
Concern lingers in her eyes even with the assurance that he was fine. Rojas wants to ask if he spaces out often but it isn’t polite. Right then, she resolves herself to make sure she takes care of Jake. She wants to be consciously aware of the things that stir up phantoms she could never fathom nor reach out and touch.
“You were? See, I knew you were learned!” Rojas exclaimed. “What department?” She questions, fully intrigued. His commentary makes her laugh a little. He wasn’t wrong. She smiles as the conversation comes round to his present occupation. “That’s one heck of a deal you’ve got going there.” In truth, she envied it. “The Colony? No kidding?! That’s pretty cool. I’ve never been there, but I have heard of it. Is it really as glamorous as people make it sound?”
She nods. Her eyes briefly snatching a look across the tarmac at the sunny palms. “It really is a shame. Although we do have one consolation. We’re trading one paradise for another,” comes her cheerful reply. Charcoal eyes light up with gleeful mirth. “I’d love that!” In fact, the thought enthralled her. “Until our return trip, you want to explore Europe together? I mean, I can’t offer you a grand tour or anything- but-…” The offer remained firm. “It would be a real shame if I had to visit all the sights by myself.”
Rojas shuffles the weight of the bags and allows the lady at the baggage counter to view her ticket. They’d be boarding shortly and she couldn’t wait.

“Well, alright…”

He was please that she kept slinging compliments; it was better than having hash in his hair like he did before he worked up the nerve to contact Sonny.

“I see things merely as ha’int done, not can’t be done.” Jake said, gesturing with his hands in an a-to-be motion.

“The Crocketts can get along with just about anybody so long as they speak truths. Liars, beware. Still, they’ve a couple of greasy informant types who are less than honest citizens.”

Jake grinned and shied his head at the idea of Rojas coming over to watch him and the Crockett children getting along together. “You’re welcome to come ‘round, Vanessa. Most any time during the week ought to be alright. There ain’t much goin’ on then but child-rearin’.”

Hearing her say– or rather, by proxy– that her life didn’t matter, caused Jake to comfort her in the form of taking her hand. They were close enough now, he supposed, to warrant a friendly touch. “Your life mattered the moment you were born, and it will continue to matter even once you’ve passed… If to no one else, then to me. If I never saw you again after today, I’d still think of you as a friend… In a city like this, friendship is scarce. No. It’s scare allover. But it’s more poignant in a fishbowl than a wasteland. See, there’s not that element of desperation.”

He was holding onto to her too long? He let go.

“There’s about six yea’s between us…”

Jake welcomed the dependability, having lost much faith in his own faculties long ago. “I’d like that,” is all the more he said on the subject.

“Really? I reckoned I sounded like a bumpkin. It’s nice to know I don’t, no offense to the far country folk.” He shook his head lightly. “I wouldn’t say it’s too glamorous. At least not for modern times. We do get some debutantes from time to time, but the rates aren’t terribly high, and most of the guests are your average tourists.”

Crockett exposed the remaining luggage and also proffered his ticket and passport forwards for inspection.

“Europe and Miss Rojas… It almost sounds like a picture, don’t you think? Yeah. I’d very much like to explore together. You might even keep me from being mugged.” A little joke, just to throw her off the scent that he was mondo crushing on her.

What is this feeling lending a palpable warmth to the very essence of her soul? Is this what it feels like to matter to someone? How it feels to leave a semi-permanent impression. Her giddy heart felt like it would burst!!! A huff, a breathy laugh, peels free of her. It was the first time she ever felt this way. So blissfully enthralled it nearly moved her to tears. Bashfully, she ducks her head a bit though it does little to snatch away her grin.

“Jake Crockett, you really are a man of your word. Aren’t you?” He was continually proving himself even if she never asked it of him. He was a rare gem in a world full of dirt and grime. “Those children are super cute. I almost wouldn’t mind if they did cut in,” she softly reveals. Even still, she is glad to have their uncle ALL to herself. “It’s no wonder they treat you like a king. Although I’m not sure I could be as charitable as they are, ever letting a guy like you slip outta my sight.” Of course, their friendship was no where near intimate enough for that kind of talk and yet, she can’t well it up inside of her.
With a grin she accepts his two bags. “You carry bricks all the time in order to get those muscles?” She prods, jestingly. Her head inclining towards his shoulders. Admittedly, she liked what she was seeing, having paid extra attention to the movement of his muscles as he took her bag. To her, even his small trips seemed like an investment worth digging into as she’s never had even that. Well, most families returned her to Social services before any fun trips could really be taken. Miami was her first massive leap. Her eyes never departed from him as he spoke. “Yeah?” Her eyes light up, half-willing him to divulge more. “What happened between you both? If you don’t mind my asking.” She never wanted to press him outside of his comfort-zone. “I am actually. Still interested in Crockett’s,” she clarifies. A grin slips across her lips again. “You really like her, don’t you? Judging by her kids, she is quite the character.” Lord, she loves the way he talks about his family. It makes her wish she had one. “What’s it like?” Rojas softly questions, her lower-lip catching briefly between her teeth. “Having a family - a family you could depend on?” She’s never known a dynamic like that. Every home she ever entered was the epitome of strife and discord. She is genuinely curious to learn everything she can about this stark contrasting picture.
The sight of the frown wipes away any whimsicality her expression once bore. “You okay?” She questions, subconsciously moving closer and edging herself part way between him and the man. Immediately, she regrets ever dragging that mountain of a man in.
The smile returns. “Is that right?” She is confident in her fighting skills but she sure as heck wasn’t going to test it when she had better things to focus on - like him. Damn. He was a real prize. “You talk like an educated man and you have me fully intrigued.”
“Now maybe you told me before and I don’t remember, beside being handsome and the best -resident -Tio, what is it you do?” She feels more inclined to stand closer to him. “Body-builder? No- wait- with a face like yours, you have to be a model.” She moves up with the line to have the tickets examined. Her hands holding his luggage as if they were a sacred treasure.

“Well, you do speak your mind, detective. Not a bad thing by any means, of course, but you will excuse me if I blush.” Jake straightened his jacket, following through with the redness in his cheeks.

“Yes, she’s very forward...” Crockett smiled. He didn’t mind the attention because he found Rojas genuine, and therefore knew he could counter any compliments (however half-hidden) with a friendly tease. “I’ve done labour before, many times, but the heaviest things I carry now are my two nieces and youngest nephew.” Jake Jr. and Carrie didn’t bother big Jake much, one very young and one ‘too old’, but Mar and Justice were almost always bouncing up and down off their uncle’s limbs. Incidentally, babysitting was very good exercise.

“Hey. I understand it’s in your nature to ask questions. Maybe that’s even why you chose the path of detective, hmm? Age made Sonny and I automatically different, you see... I had certain freedoms since the day he was born, so naturally there was resentment there. Mother was bonkers, and I suspect the reason father was careless... They’d make mistakes in each other and for that reason Sonny and I, to them, were merely the shadows of some temporal covenant between a drunken sailor and a twice-forgotten woman... Some sort of tainted love persisted between the four of us, nevertheless, and as a result not a one of us died before his time...”

Jake’s story didn’t exactly explain anything but it did clarify that a darkness existed in Jake, however far beyond the beauty and quietude. “I adore her, more precisely. She is my dear sister, after all, through matrimony.” He didn’t make comment but he was relieved to remember there were hard drinks awaiting him on the plane. “I wish I could offer you greater insight, Detective... Dependability is a new experience for me, as much as it is a pleasurable one.

The mental pictures gradually blurred back into reality, resulting in a fleeting and subtle shiver throughout Jake’s person. “I’m fine,” he replied. “I just spaced out for a moment.”

The neon jungle and the hairless apes residing there were not much more welcoming than the slithering vines and camouflaged creatures that had engulfed his future from the time he was just twenty.

“I was assistant to a very prestigious professor for two years, but I can hardly say I’m smarter than any streetwise man. A private office gives you a small perspective on a big ol’ world... Never mind that, though. You wanna know what I do NOW, right?” He continued, skipping a beat. “Five days a week, I cook, clean, handyman, and babysit for the Crockett household. For that I accept room, board, and two-hundred dollars in cash daily. Whatever is left over at the end of each day, my brother is generous enough to let me keep for myself. On Satu’days and Sund’ys, from ten pm to 6 am, I perform Night Audits for the Colony hotel in Palm Beach... You know the Colony, don’t you?” The building was famous merely for its standout presence, even having been depicted in a certain popular video game.

“Why, it’s almost a shame to be leaving Miami... I wonder if perhaps you might indulge me to take you on a tour of our ‘fare’ city.” Jake was referring to the copious amounts of parallel-parked taxi cabs lining nearly every block starting with County Line Road (aka SR 852). Maybe the joke would go over Vanessa’s head, or maybe it would make her crack another smile. He was really banking on that last one.

Truthfully, he felt she was in poor company with him.

An effervescent glow steals across her dark eyes, which were widened with astonishment. “You remembered?” Of all the places she has been and all of the people she’s met, he was one of the few who recollected encountering her; save for the criminals she put away. If there was going to be anyone who recalled her, there couldn’t have been a more kind or handsome man in the entire world. Jake made her feel at home even amongst a myriad of strangers.
The one date they shared had been the best in her life. The pair had such a great time, they stayed out far longer than either one of them had anticipated. At least, longer than she anticipated. Rojas had been contemplating calling him up but life was complicated and it always seemed to have a way of intruding. Until now….
The unforgettable chemistry between them that had nearly gone forgotten, revives with stunning force. It’s presence is purely palpable in the thrumming of her own heartbeat.

“You’re not?” Vanessa could hardly strain the excitement out of her voice as she asks. Her observant eyes befall Jake’s bags. Her lower-lip briefly tucks between her teeth. Could a girl really get so lucky? It’s like she is rolling all sevens!
The Afro-Latina bounced eagerly on her toes as her eyes drift down to examine his ticket. It did appear that they were going to all the same stops and it looks like their flight numbers were the same for all three.
Her eyes round significantly at his offer. It’s the first ever she’s received. She’s used to handling her own. “How about I make you a deal, I’ll hold your luggage if you’d take mine?” Comes her counter-offer. His advice about her luggage is not only well-received but heeded for the time being. “Sounds like you speak from experience. You do a lot of traveling?” Comes her natural inquiry. And unlike many, she genuinely cared about the answer.
A missing piece of her feels like it slots into place when he says, that he is pleased to run into her. Cheeks burn, blazing to life with a unstoppable blush. “Of course!!! I’ve been dying to ask around for it. I even considered wading through all the Crockett’s in the phonebook to find you,” she confides rather honestly. While phonebooks were good and handy, calling up every single Crockett in them could take quite a good chunk of time. And time was something she always felt short of.
Stealing another glance at his ticket, she lets out an astonished laugh. “Says there - that you’re in the seat next to mine.” She announces with a grin, flashing her ticket towards him as best she could with her bag situated between both of her arms. “Which, is good news. I’ll have you know, I was about to fight some people to have that honor.” Her eyes drift off towards the queue holding the other passengers. Inclining her head in the direction of a particularly solid built man, Rojas tacks on, “even the Michelin Man over there with the eight-pack.” Her gaze returns to Jake. “Think I could have taken him?” She half-humorously prods. Casting a teasing but none-the-less conspiratorial look at Jake she remarks, “maybe we’ll  have to fight him anyways for a window seat.” Of course, it didn’t really matter what kind of seat she had now that she’d be next to him.
She could sympathize with his last remark. Since arriving in Miami, she’s made a sum total of five friends. 99% of which belonged to her unit. He was the outlier- but never-the-less the most valued of those acquaintances. “Would you permit me to buy you a wine or something onboard?”

I remember,” he assured her, his demeanor happy but stable. It was a bit saddening to Jake, to think that she should find herself so forgettable.

“And I promise I’m alone. Well, I was. Nobody will be comin’ along to spoil any of our fun. The kids already gave me a farewell grand enough to last me all potential future trips--” Crockett took her bag trading it for his two. A lopsided deal but he wasn’t going to argue. “I took a lot of small trips, camp-outs and things but I never could afford aeroplanes flights and such as a young‘n. I didn’t care much for indoors. But it’s grown on me since reconnecting with my brother and getting acquainted with his family...” Imagining the ‘blue’ beauty haunting the white pages brought him pause and a greater appeal for her than he’d experienced yet. "Say, if you’re still interested in Crocketts, I’ll be the first to tell you that Raquel Tubbs-Crockett is as thoroughbred a human as they come.”

Jake frowned at the solid man, subconsciously reminded of the unsavory military types he’d dealt with. He swallowed hard when asked the question, a suppressed part of him knowing very well a less tank-like build was capable of incapacitating the more formidable figure.

“Yes, ma’am. I have no prejudice when it comes to female favour... for I believe restricting the... knightly... tendencies of natural woman is the antithesis of the modern gentleman.”
