“You’ve had a very difficult time,” your therapist reminds you gently. “You need to give yourself some time to breathe and I am not convinced that being that close to your husband will provide you with that space to be yourself.”

Dr. Ayo is kind but no nonsense. Her office is bright, a big window overlooking the bay with her multiple degrees hanging up on the sparsely decorated walls. It feels like a safe space but you still aren’t sure, even with her soft reassurance that what is said in this room will stay in this room.

“Do you get that space?” Dr. Ayo asks, waiting for your answer as you stare at her black sky high Louboutin pumps.

“N-No,” you reply, wringing your hands in your lap. “He doesn’t trust me.”

“Trust is the foundation of a relationship. Do you feel you can trust him?”

After a long silence, Dr. Ayo gives you a sympathetic smile.

“It shouldn’t take that long to answer.”
