A sharp heat licks at his fingers. The cig is nothing but ash. He opens his eyes, but he can still see the terrible, manic emptiness in John’s gaze like he’s watching the memory play out on a movie screen. He used to stare out at the fence line for hours, like he could will himself past it, like he couldn’t even see the barbed wire, the dogs, the guards, the guns. Like it didn’t matter that he was letting the stalag kill him, inch by torturous inch, and taking Gale with him as he went.  He stubs out the cigarette and lights another one. Marge finds him like that, breathing in the smoke and gazing blankly out at the rime of frost the night left behind.

They cleaned him up as best they could, but John smelled like ash and old blood for days, until he slept off the worst of his head wound and could keep his feet long enough for a proper scrub down. Even then, he leaned against Gale like a half-felled tree, swaying and shivering as Gale did his best to scour him clean. He remembers trying desperately to be gentle; remembers failing. The blood was crusted on thick and black, dried down like tar. Even after he was clean, Gale caught the sick tang of it on him for days.
