The preview for Welcome to the Madness reminded me of one thing that sometimes I would really prefer to forget: Whatever the creators of yoi do now, some group of people will always be unhappy.
In this case, people claimed that Yurio’s EX program was “sexualizing a 15 year old” and made it sound like the creators were some nasty perverts who only cared about ‘fanservice’.
Like… what? The fans sexualized it, sure, but there was nothing inherently sexual about the program itself. And I can guarantee you, if they’d done something else with the program, someone else would be unhappy. Like, if they took out the epic Johnny Weir slide then people would complain about the animation, say that it’s “mediocre” or boring, or doesn’t fit Yurio, and is on the other hand too innocent and too infantilizing or too feminine or something.
In my opnion WttM was perfect, or at least as much as we’ve seen of it is.
But this is a sad reminder that the yoi fandom is so big and contains so many people with so many different reactions, opinions, thoughts, mindsets etc that the anime just can’t please everyone. Someone will always find an excuse to shit on the show or the creators.
Call me shameless (pun not intended), but I sort of wish that everyone could take the approach of the majority of the fandom - find something good about everything we receive from the creators, enjoy it as much as you can, and appreciate it for what it is, without getting offended or angry or acting entitled. And if you don’t agree with it or don’t enjoy it? That’s also cool. Criticism, as long as its constructive, is always fine imo.
Man, I guess I just wish that people respected the creators without letting their own impressions get in the way of what Yamamoto and Kubo are trying to show, because they’re great people who really respect the fanbase and I believe the feeling should be mutual.
