Challenge mode! Pegasus and Honda 🍷🐕‍🦺

Pegasus and Honda are both romantics! And they’re both romantics in every canon they’re a part of at that! They are navigated in some degree by the idea of romance. Pegasus has his history with Cynthia. Honda has his clumsy crush on Miho in the manga and the Toei anime, and his crush on Shizuka in the DM anime.

I also think of how young Pegasus, in the fresh waves of grief, was shown to have compassion for a pursued thief and how that was a bit Honda-ish – wanting to help. I personally feel Pegasus allowed himself to become more and more lost in the dark power of the Millennium Eye in time – I think that had been a genuine moment of compassion for him back then, when he was young. I think Pegasus’ story is something of a nihilistic one on how life can erode someone inside taken to its most extreme form – in his case becoming more and more cruel without a tie to what he used to care about and with power in his hands until he’s destroyed. That’s of course a pretty sharp contrast to Honda as more of an everyday everyman in a wild crazy world who wants to be a good friend and who doesn’t have any special powers or particularly noteworthy privileges or particularly noteworthy lack thereof.

Honda does start off with something of a mean streak but reveals himself to be very earnest after Yugi accepts him for his softer side (that goofy crush on Miho) and after Yugi proves how much he cares about and believes in Jonouchi too. I wonder if Pegasus saw a little bit of his past self in Yugi and Atem, and that’s why he told Atem his backstory in the manga. That his backstory was meant to be a warning to Atem. I guess different forms of seeing something of yourself in someone else.
