I love tense scenes like this! My friend is currently re-reading the trilogy again and sending me screenshots of our favorite scenes and I just had to draw one of them! I needed to make a new account for this though because I feel like fanarts just don't fit on my main one and this way i can just post random drawings whenever I have a fan outburst again. Probably the last one for a few weeks, because i'm waiting for my friend to come back from vacation so we can dive into the 2nd and 3rd book. (I love love love the slow burn, but i also want to get to the kissy bits !)

damen is the correct answer.

laurent would be disliked in the capitol. at the end of the day, it’s a popularity contest and laurent doesn’t win any of those. volunteers get favors based on how well liked they are, so the odds are stacked against him.

damen is charming, friendly, popular and would be a crowd favorite. he makes friends and allies easily, wins people to his side, and makes people want to reward him with gifts and favors.

there’s no way laurent would win a death tournament against damen. the man took out an entire army single-handedly, he can handle 23 kids. plus, laurent wouldn’t have made it out of arles alive without damen’s intervention against the assassins, and that’s not counting all the other times in the series where damen had to save his life.

the only reason laurent started winning against the regent was because the regent couldn’t predict damen. laurent couldn’t win on his own, he’s too predictable and he’s been trying unsuccessfully for years. damen thinks outside of the box and is a tactical prodigy. a running theme in the books is how damen survives and wins against all odds. he won the hunger games when he started out as a slave, advanced to captain, then king, won his crown back, freed vere of the regent and united two kingdoms. he’s the definitive winner.

paschal is very interesting morally bc yes he obviously cared about laurent and ended up saving the day but also. this cunt held onto that letter for god knows how long as laurent was being humilliated in a trial entirely rigged against him with the most likely result of a certain painful torture and death and he only revealed the truth when damen begged him to. for a doctor he sure has no goddamn idea where is spine is for like 99% of the series i love it i love him
