Any tips on setting up your alter on a budget/for poor people?

💸 Dollar tree, dollar general, and second hand shops are your best friends.

💸 If you like spaghetti get ready to make a lot of it because almost all of the jars for marinara sauce are glass. And glass jars=everything you’ll need from decoration to storage.

💸 Buy in bulk if you can. That way you have more than you need rather than having only just what you need and you can use it for later.

💸 Tea lights give ample ambience. You can buy 100 of them at bed bath & body or at Walmart. (I think ikea has tea lights in bulk too but not as much as 100. Maybe like 30?)

💸 To add to the tea lights, can’t light real ones in your house? Get fake ones and put them in some shot glasses. Or square glasses.

💸 Best time to buy supplies for your alter? Now at the spirit Halloween stores that pop up and in Nov. and Dec. Never buy during Oct.

💸 Etsy is my place for crystals. Message me and I can send you come places with good prices.

💸 Never buy at those spiritual ships unless you just want to. Everything is always over priced.

💸 Most 5 and belows’ have a spiritual section with salt lamps. If you want to get a cute one, that’s the place to go.

💸 When Christmas comes around and when Christmas stuff goes on sale? Get the damn Christmas lights. Get more than one box (I get at least five). You will thank yourself later when it’s the next year and it’s October/Fall and the ones you used earlier that year died out.

💸 Alter cloth? Local fabric shop. You can find some places online that sell fabric as well but you gotta look hard and compare.

💸 A stick from your backyard give plenty of aesthetic, trust me. Don’t be afraid to walk around outside if you can.

💸 Also sorry that this is all US centric 😅

the magick of acorns

acorns are a cute, perfectly-sized magick charm to carry in your pocket. they represent the energy of the beautiful oak tree, which has long-held associations with strength, endurance, courage, generosity and honesty. for this reason, it has “kingly” attributes; it’s said that king arthur’s round table was made from a cross-section of a big elder oak tree’s trunk.

each acorn on the oak tree is believed to have its very own faerie watching over it. keep this in mind before you pluck an acorn from its tree; when harvesting acorns, it’s best to forage for fallen ones so as not to bring about fae mischief.

☾ using acorns as charms

carry an acorn in your pocket for health, abundance, prosperity and luck.

plant an acorn in your garden under a full moon to cultivate happiness.

use an acorn at your altar to represent the earth element.

wear an acorn around your neck to bring beauty, youth, and protection.

place an acorn in your purse or wallet to attract financial security.

an acorn at your desk inspires patience and long-term success.

☾ a simple acorn spell for strength during hardships

light a red candle, which represents strength, survival and endurance. hold an acorn in your hands and look at the flame, meditating on the hardships you’re going through and your wishes to overcome them. remind yourself that you are strong and resilient. visualize the end to the situation. warm the acorn over the candleflame, kiss the acorn, and place it under your pillow.

☾ kitchen witchcraft: acorn maple shortbread cookies

these cookies are delicious and rustic, celebrating the oak and maple trees. the cookies have powerful spiritual healing properties. here is a recipe for how to make acorn flour, which involves a couple days of labor and requires a food processor. the end product, however, is a delicious dark gluten-free flour that has chestnut flavor notes. for the cookies (makes 12), you will need:

  • 2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature (8 ounces)
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup maple sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup acorn flour

1. Combine the butter, sugars and vanilla extract in a bowl and whisk together with a fork.

2. Mix the salt and flours together with a whisk in another bowl, then pour the mixture in with the butter/sugar. mix with a fork just enough to make a sticky dough with no butter chunks.

3. shape the dough into a large disk, wedge between parchment paper and freeze for at least two hours, so they maintain their structure in the oven.

4. preheat the oven to 350°F. flatten the dough disk to about ½ inch and use a cookie cutter to cut out the cookies.

5. place the cookies on an ungreased baking sheet and bake for 23-26 minutes (or until the edges are beginning to brown).

☾ an acorn-top faerie offering

to make an offering to nearby fae and good spirits, place a ring of acorn tops on a tree stump, and fill the acorn tops with wine. leave a pile of rose petals in the center of the ring.

girl in horror movie holding a bible open: “according to legend, a mob tortured a half-man, half-god, and nailed him to a wooden cross, leaving him to starve to death. But days later, on this very night, they found he had clawed his way out of the grave. Now those who believe lie in wait for him to rise again, To honour him, they have weekly gatherings where they chant and sing, and at the end of it they eat his flesh and blood.”

girl’s friend: “wow.. thats so creepy…”

horror movie jock: “it’s only a myth, don’t worry”

Medusa with the Head of Perseus, Luciano Garbati, 2008

I adore how she carries his head low, at her side, and not aloft in triumph. This is not a self-aggrandizing hero lauding her great deed. This is a woman who wanted to be left the fuck alone.

Also look at her body. The double hips. The asymetrical boobs. She’s thin, but she’s realistic as hell. That’s a real woman.

And the look in her eyes. Damn.

I originally saw photos of Garbati’s Medusa a long time ago, but I specifically remember this post from earlier this year. Medusa was one of those pieces that really buried into my head and heart. Sounds silly, but just looking at it gives me strength.

Today I was lucky enough to see it in person. She’s incredible. And, something that the original pictures don’t show— she’s HUGE!

I love this even better now that we can see the baffled look on Perseus’s face.
