If I was scrolling faster I would’ve entirely blown this off as an aesthetic post and moved on

I think it’s incredibly fucked how capitalism discourages learning for learning’s sake. People will have interests they’ve spent years researching then say it’s “useless knowledge” bc it didn’t go towards a college degree and isn’t part of their job. Learning is never useless! Your brain is growing and developing throughout your whole life! People would never have epiphanies or sudden lightening strikes of creativity if they weren’t learning new things! That goes double for topics like science, politics, and history, which inform your understanding of the world you live in!

one of many things I am still so mad about about wheel of time season 2 though is the whole “Moiraine was normal and one day she changed and took on the personality of an autistic woman who has issues with touch and seemed so unhappy” and now she’s tortured forever. Like omg being taciturn and focused on stuff and twitching your hands a lot is not fundamentally maladaptive trauma behaviour sometimes people just do that

that bad sensory moment when you’re trying to do something that requires a lot of focus and the people around you are talking loudly and you’re just sitting there like $&@&&@@^%#%^%***++*%%#%^*+%%%

"There's no such thing as a fish because you can't define it phylogenetically without also including things that aren't fish"

Man I have bad news for you about lizards. And reptiles in general. And wasps, but I guess that depends on your opinion on wasps. And I don't think you're ready for trees.

I'm defineiely not prepared for trees but if you want an excuse to make tumblr suffer i will be the sacrifice

Trees aren't a phylum or an order or anything like that, being a tree is just a thing some plants do

It's been described as a biological strategy - you want light, an efficient way to do that is put all the bits of you that want light (that is, leaves) high up so they're not in the shadow of other things, spread out both to cover a wide area and so they're not in their own shade, because that would be a waste of leaf

So the same shape of doing this has evolved independently dozens of times - crabs have nothing on trees. But this also leads to disagreement as to what a tree even is

For example, is a palm a tree? They don't have branches, but they do have a canopy - what about how a lot of conifers don't have a canopy? Just a cone of green that comes down to the ground! If that's a tree, what's the difference between a tree and a bush?

But we can agree they're centred around a single woody trunk right, so there's a starting point - except no, in comes the quaking aspen, which is one huge organism below the surface that shoots up trunks wherever the hell it feels like it, each of which is by any casual observer's reckoning obviously a tree.

The last thing we want to do is answer any of these questions, because that's how we end up with the whole berry situation, where a tomato is a berry but a strawberry is a "fleshy receptacle"

personally i think simple words like "fish" and "tree" and "berry" should be reserved for the people, and scientists should stop redefining words that have been in use for generations. the way things are now, obnoxious people insist it's normal people who are using them wrong, rather than the folks trying to exhaustively define things based on genetic criteria. i say this as someone who likes science btw

I will join you in your soapbox to add that we got the word henge from Stonehenge, then someone made a precise technical definition of what a henge is, and Stonehenge doesn't meet that definition

Behold, a fish

Behold, not a fish

cats arent in fucking actinopterygii theyre in fucking SARCOPTERYGII like all other tetrapods. actinopterygii comprises all the ray-finned fish which is like 95% of every animal you'd consider fish, and i can live with things like sharks, hagfish and coelacanth being 'fish-like organisms' without being true Fish, theyre beautiful and special in their own way

Ah yes, sorry, a correction

Behold, also not a fish

Was all this just an elaborate excuse to post a photo of your cat?

I'm assuming so...or to somehow swing it around to smooth sharks

My hot take is that actually food allergies are a disability and more people need to realize that. The amount of research people with food allergies have to do when they want to go visit places but arent sure if they’ll have access to any food there is insane. Allergy friendly food is almost ALWAYS incredibly expensive in stores bc of all those fucking fad diets that like yoga instructors and middle age soccer moms make popular. And on top of the price, it is so hard to FIND! Almost evrry grocery store ive been to has a tiny ass allergy section that is almost always near empty. Plus what about people who don’t have the money to pay 10$ for a loaf of bread? You go to starbucks and non-dairy milks are like 70 cents extra? People are definitely out there buying and eating stuff that is destroying their digestive systems because they have no other choice. I am begging people to stop pretending that catering to people’s food allergies is elitist and not worth is. We need to make these options openly available.
