Inside Valeria Alvarez is a darkness ― an unexplainable and excruciating darkness. A darkness that weaves its way inside, controls her, tortures her, saves her. Outside Valeria Alvarez is a girl, born on the same day as a group of heroes called The Umbrella Academy…Unlike them, her mother refused to give her up, said she wanted to keep her daughter. It was endearing, until Val turned three, and it happened for the first time. 

Val woke up from a nap without a giddy smile on her face ― no giggles, no words, nothing. In place of her brown eyes were black, demonic mirrors staring back at her. In a blink, it was gone. 

When Val was five, it happened again. This time, she woke her mother up standing beside her bed, grinning mischievously at her. They found a dead squirrel in her room the next day. Not an accident, they claimed. 

As more instances happened, now much more frequently and for much longer periods of time, her parents began to lock their daughter’s door at night in fear for their own safety. From inside the room came laughter and screams and spine-chilling noises that neither of them could pinpoint. 

At the age of ten, Valeria Alvarez was dropped off at the doorstep of the Academy in the middle of the night, where she would learn to use her ability for good ― learn to control her. She must learn to control the darkness…before it hurts someone else.

Being born to a woman who was not pregnant the morning of her child’s birth may have been seen as a strange phenomenon, especially if it also happened to 42 other women around the world. Marisol Mahal’s parents took their daughters birth as a gift from God, refusing to give her up to Reginald Hargreeves no matter the amount of money he offered. When her healing abilities manifested they took it to the next level and deemed her a God of Healing. As a result, people from different religious backgrounds visited the young girl, bathing her in offerings and prayers asking for a cure for their illnesses. The very public upbringing, and the feeling of invincibility, created a self-centered and selfish woman with the inability to create proper relationships who might also have a slight obsession with alcohol.

None of that matters when the world is ending in 8 days though.

Among the forty-three children born on the twelfth hour of the first day of October, there was set of twins. 5, code named the Boy, could teleport himself instantly and exhibted potential to travel through time. 5.5, code named the Twin, could summon small portals, but possessed a far more dangerous power: the ability to see into the past. Reginald Hargreeves managed to instil control in V, until her brother disappeared in a foolish attempt to time travel. The Twin, without her twin, was lost. As consequence, her visions intensified, threatening her sanity and Reginald’s secrets. So he sent her away.

In the years since, she reimagined herself as Olivia Dent, a brilliant theoretical physicist dedicated to unraveling the secrets to time travel, to bringing home her missing piece. She never expected to ever step foot into the Academy again, but the death of her guardian forces her to return. There, surrounded by her past, Five finally returns to her, still thirteen but so very different. His eyes are older and he only speaks in warnings. The apocalypse is coming and only the Umbrella Academy can stop it. 

If they can ever get through the variety of their issues first.
