Claire was working in the office at the cabin when she heard the screen door fly open.

“Don’t slam the…” she started to call out as the noise of the door hitting the frame made her jump. “…door.” “Claire!” Maisie called, and Claire could hear her struggling to kick off her boots (Claire had a pretty strict no shoes in the house rule, mostly because she lived with Owen and Maisie who thought nothing of wearing dirty, filthy shoes into the house and dragging mud all over her hardwood floors and plush carpets. After making a strangled noise once, after Owen left a trail of mud and something else that Claire preferred not to think about, she finally had enough and came down hard on both her partner and her kid, scaring them into compliance). “Up here,” Claire called back and Maisie came flying into the office, something clutched in her hands. “Whatcha got there, Mais?” “I found them! In the woods! I went a slightly different path, and I found a creek that I’ve never seen before, and then these were just there,” Maisie was so excited that her words began to tumble out too quickly, one word on top of another, and Claire gave her a gentle smile.
