Lorelai shrugged. “Well, your parents are very proud of you. Let’s see. Lucas Danes. Professional baseball player. Pitcher, is it?” She frowned lightly, as her baseball knowledge was limited. “Dating a girl named Rachel.” She had to resist the sudden urge to roll her eyes. Katherine and William weren’t a fan of Rachel’s. Of course, they didn’t know that Rachel had broken up with Luke just a couple of days prior. “Used to run track in high school. Gained the nickname Butch Danes.” She giggled lightly at that. She had found a couple of his old track trophies and yearbooks.
“And you’ve been living quite the life, living your dream.” She felt a slight bit of envy towards the man, but then she realized that Rory was her dream and she didn’t really know what she’d be doing if she didn’t have her. “So, you’re right. I do know quite a bit about you. But, I’m an open book. What do you want to know?” The twenty six year old really had nothing to hide.

Luke looked at her curiously, she did know an awful lot. Though he could see why, his parents had obviously taken a shine to her; pretty, cute kid, If only they had thought to give Rachel the time of day. He found himself blushing when she mentioned his high school nickname. “Nobody really calls me Butch anymore.” That was a relic from a bygone age.

She asked what he wanted to know about her, he had questions sure but they weren’t so prying, he thought he would start simple. “How long have you guys lived here in town?” This was definitely the first time he’d seen her, he would have remembered her otherwise..

She snorted, finding his question thoroughly amusing. “Obviously, your parents didn’t tell you that coffee and I are the very best of friends.” Really, Lorelai’s coffee addiction was probably a character flaw but she thought of it as an endearing quirk. As she entered the house, she smiled widely, when she saw Rory and William, who were already reading a book Rory had brought along.
“Man, that kid has him wrapped around her finger.” She shook her head lightly. “Of course, she’s Rory, so I get it. From the moment I saw those big blue eyes, I was a goner too. I swear, she could probably ask me to steal the Crown jewels and I’d find a way to do it.” Of course, she was only half kidding. There really wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for her kid.

“Seems like they didn’t tell me a lot.” Like about how gorgeous Lorela was but perhaps his mother had more things on her mind. He walked into the kitchen and went to the cupboard, getting ready to mix her up some coffee.

“It’s sweet to see, I never really went in for kids myself.” He had wanted some but could never find the right girl so instead, he focused on sport. Luke chuckled when she mentioned the Crown jewels. “I’ve seen those, they’re not that nice.” He smiled, offering Lorelai her coffee. “You know more about me than I do you I’ll wager”

Rory was suddenly feeling very shy, not expecting to see a stranger at the door. She held closely to her mother. Lorelai frowned, a bit confused, but as she studied the man at the door, recognition dawned on her. Katherine loved her children very much and she was definitely the type of mother who kept pictures around the house. “You must be Lucas.” She said, softly. Of course, it only made sense that he would be here.
“I’m Lorelai and this little lovebug here is Rory. We’re here to see William.” She explained. Rory just gave a shy nod. She caught sight of the man in question, behind Luke and her face lit up. “Grandpa!” The little girl ran past Luke and into the house before Lorelai could stop her. A light blush colored Lorelai’s cheeks. “I’m sorry…she’s been very worried.”

It was quite disorienting for Luke to hear someone address his dad as grandpa, Liz’s son definitely didn’t do that. He smiled back at the woman, her interruption was unexpected but perhaps a needed one. “I don’t remember my dad having another daughter, so you much be Lorelai” He shook her hand and nodded. “Nice to meet you.”

He smiled over at his father and the little girl, having her around seemed to lift his spirits immensely. “Come in, please.” It was obvious this wasn’t their first time there. “Do you like coffee? I’m sure there is some around here.”

Baseball star Luke Danes had always been the stoic type, the one who set an example for younger team members and never spoke out of term to anyone but when matters came up that involved his family it was like he was a different person, worry came easily and when he heard that his father was deteriorating he hopped on the next plane back to Hartford.

He was welcomed with open arms by his mother, he had only wished it was under better circumstances. His father wasn't really in pain but he could tell his mother was from seeing her husband so ill, that was when Luke suggested she take some time away from the situation, he was there now, he'd take care of things. Katherine was thankful for the respite however William was not, he loved his son truly and it was good to see him but the boy hovered and Willian had the right mind to toss him in the pond so he could get a few minutes of peace and quiet.

"Luke, stop," William said in a stern tone. "If you don't, the next time you go out for groceries I swear I will lock you out." When he heard the knock, he breathed a sigh of relief. "There, you want something to do? Answer the door." Maybe it would be a girl scout he could con recipes out of.

Luke rolled his eyes, stubborn, he really didn't know how his mother put up with that behavior. Must be love he guessed. He did what he was told and opened the door, surprised to see a woman not much younger than him with a small girl at her side, something about her took his breath away and for a moment he completely zoned out until he finally remembered what words were. "Um, hi. Can I help you?"

“Thank you, Luke. You’re the best.” She took the slices of pie over to the girls. “Cherry for Rory. Apple for Lane and blueberry for me. Dig in.” She took a fork and bit into hers. “Mmmm.”

“You’re just lucky I couldn’t decide what pie to bake last night.” He had been nervous about opening so Luke figured he would just make all the pies? Cooking relaxed him. “But it’s good, right?” Yes if that moan was anything to go by.

Lorelai batted her eyelashes at him and licked her lips. “I promise I will make it worth your while, Luke. Please? For me?”

Luke watched the way she deliberately licked her lips, damn that was distracting. “Fine, but don’t go telling everybody alright?” He went into the kitchen and cut off three servings of pie, putting extra whipped cream on each one. He brought them back out and placed them in front of the girls. “Thought you could use one too.” He smiled at Lorelai.

Lane smiled and nodded.
Lorelai looked at them both. “Why don’t you two take a seat and I will see if I can convince our friend Luke here to give you a fresh slice of pie with extra whipped cream.”
The girls’ eyes lit up and they ran to take a seat.

“I don’t know, I don’t just give away pie.” Luke grumbled. “I’m going to have to get something pretty special in return otherwise everyone will want free pie.” He couldn’t have that, it was his first day after all.

“That’s us, kid.” Lorelai said. “Ooh, I want to try those caramel apple things.”
“Me too!” Rory said, excitedly.
Lane frowned. “Mama says candy apples are the devil’s candy. Is that true?”
“Uh…well, they’re not exactly healthy for you.” Lorelai replied.

Rory giggled at the compliment, Luke thought she and her mom were pretty?

Oh that poor child, Luke himself wasn’t super fond of sweets but Lane as a kid, she should be able to enjoy them at least once. Luke leaned down to talk to her. “If I happen to make some and one goes missing, I won’t tell anyone.” He gave her a wink.

Lorelai grinned widely. “Well, we certainly can’t miss a festival. I think it’s just after your birthday.” Lorelai replied. “We can definitely go. Maybe Luke will come with us and show us around.”

“Mom is usually on the organizing committees for these things so yeah, I’ll be there to help out, I’m sure I can sure a couple out pretty girls around.” He winked at Lorelai.

It felt so natural with Luke and Lorelai had to silently wonder if that was a sign. After all, it had never been this easy with Chris.

Luke was about to continue their flirtation when Rory and her little friend came back in bouncing about.

“Mommy! Lane says there is going to be a festival!” This astonished Rory, she’d never been to a festival before. “Can we go, can we?”

Luke chuckled. “They hold those all the time around here.”

Lorelai smiled softly. “Today is my day off. I don’t really have any plans. I was going to spend the day with Rory but she abandoned me for Lane.” Lorelai feigned a dramatic tone. “Really? That’s really thoughtful, Luke. Are you sure? I mean can you close early on your first day?”

“Poor thing. all alone.” Luke wouldn’t mind keeping her company. “I wouldn’t be closing up early, I’m just saying when I do we could eat together, I think it would be nice.”

Katherine was right. But her statement prompted alarm bells to go off in Lorelai’s brain. She looked up when Luke returned. “Fire?” Was that normal?
“Oh uh yeah. Your mother is very insightful.” She replied, smiling. “So, what did you set on fire?” Something else occurred to her. “Hey…are you running this place all by yourself? I mean you can’t possibly be cooking and serving and taking orders all at the same time.”

“Not all by myself, no but to be honest I didn’t think it would be so busy in here so I let the other chef go to the bank. Who knew I was popular?” Luke chuckled. “And it’s fine, it was put out, you’re safe.”
