Producing a musical with a war criminal is really hitting the bottomest of the bottom for me

The tags from @klaviergavinwiki were too good to not post.

Too little, too late and she's still friends with venture capitalists and warmongers. It's a meaningless gesture.

When Obama became the president, he didn't make my land safer, he turned it into a graveyard with remnants of his drones scattered all over the land. My beloved land is in ruins and I will never be able to return there. Obama was no different than Bush, he was in fact worse. Cursing Obama has become a household routine. Whether Trump, Biden or any other leader takes the mantle of imperialism, we will suffer greatly, not you. We do not care about the outcome in your country. You will go to the polling stations, cast your vote, you will ask for change, but refuse to stand up and organize, you will repeat the same defeatist rhetoric and go back to your old routine every four year, hoping for some kind of change in your land all the while we continue to be exploited.

Muhammad Shehada, the communications chief for Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, expressed shock that there was not more media coverage of the Nasser grave.

"I CANNOT find a single headline in any mainstream media about this!" Shehada wrote on social media. "Imagine it was Ukraine? or Israel?"

Beadwork stands as a cornerstone in native fashion, weaving intricate patterns into jewelry, regalia, and a myriad of other items. More than mere craftsmanship, beadwork embodies a profound sense of connection. Through the artistry of beading, I've encountered a tapestry of extraordinary individuals, their talents shimmering like the beads they work with. Whether crafting earrings inspired by fellow artists or discovering new talents at social events, beadwork has been a catalyst for meaningful connections. These hands draw inspiration from the skillful touch of Virginia Aguilar, a gifted local beader hailing from the Pauma Band of Luiseño Indians and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, enriching this craft with heritage and artistry.

hey guys, I could use your help with something! Sue is a Black disabled mother, migrant, and PhD student at Newcastle University who urgently needs solidarity. Newcastle University is reporting her to the Home Office in retaliation for her complaint about her abusive supervisor, in full awareness of her Stage 5 kidney disease. this is a life-and-death situation.

here's how you can help:

  1. retweet Unis Resist Border Control's tweet about Sue's abusive situation at the University of Newcastle
  2. sign the open letter to Newcastle University by 22 May
  3. pass a motion with your UCU branch (template here)
  4. donate to help Sue find a kidney donor, apply to Leave to Remain, pay solicitor fees, and cover living costs

Sue's story from the #WeAreAllSue toolkit:

In 2022, Sue Agazie, high-achieving in her field, was promised financial support for her tuition fees through scholarships and paid opportunities and enrolled into the PhD programme at Newcastle University Business School with this understanding. When Sue arrived in the UK in 2023, however, she learned that all of this financial promise was a lie; the scholarships that she had been promised never materialised. Instead, she has gone into horrific debt and is having trouble surviving.

For almost a year, Sue sought financial support for herself and her family, including grants and opportunities that would burnish the reputation of her supervisor and university as a whole. However, in that year, her supervisor not only prevented her from applying to scholarships and paid opportunities, but further controlled her research and day-to-day quality of life, with a high-level of surveillance, inappropriate supervisory practices, and escalating harassment of both her and her family.

These practices include this supervisor repeatedly preventing Sue from taking part in important professional development activities, such as research presentations, within the Business School. He also isolated her from her senior colleagues, forbidding her from attending particular activities they were facilitating, or spreading malicious rumours about them. Further, the primary supervisor repeatedly ignored Sue's pleas for support on funding applications and other opportunities that would alleviate the precarious financial situation into which she had been placed, telling her to “stop sending me links to scholarships”.

the stuff going on at columbia campus rn is genuinely incredible

despite mass arrests by NYPD and several students (including rep ilhan omar’s daughter, isra hirsi) being suspended for their participation and having their university identification deactivated, the gaza solidarity encampment is still going strong well into its second day. def recommend following independent reporter talia jane who is taking part and providing live updates. (talia was the first reporter to break aaron bushnell’s self immolation in february; she was one of the reporters he contacted personally prior to the protest.)

thank you so much alexa @shivsblunt for mentioning it…..anyone who wants to contribute to their jail support fund can do so @ bcabolitioncollective on v*nmo. also, if anyone is in the area and available to join (via cssw4palestine on ig):

Images taken 12 hours apart, words don’t begin to communicate what’s happened on Columbia’s campus in the past day

Sudan still desperately needs aid--it needs a lot of things, but it is approaching a dangerous point with famine and mass death due to hunger imminent.

These are the kinds of headlines we're getting now:

Here's an ongoing fundraiser:

I linked it before, to help with Ramadan, but it's an ongoing initiative, the need has not stopped.

I picked this gofundme because it's been boosted by people I trust and you can see pictures online of the food they've provided, e.g.:

But I also picked this because you can see the amount of donations. It's 2pm ET on Saturday, April 20th right now? For the next week, whatever's donated, I'll match for a total up to $2,000 (we'll say 2,750 CAD, since the gofundme is in Canadian dollars).

You don't have to send me a receipt, I just ask that you donate and boost.

platforming palestinian joy is just as important as sharing the suffering they're enduring during this genocide. despite continued displacement and bombardment, you cannot steal their joy and spirit. happy birthday to this sweet baby 🖤🇵🇸 may they grow up to see a free palestine

this beautiful baby is the son of ibrahim abu raida, the 25 y/o executive director of the al nasser charity in gaza, an organization working to distribute food to the displaced. they have many different ways to donate linked on their instagram (linked above) and also have a personal gfm to help with their own rebuilding efforts that is over 80% of the way to its goal.

one of my fave parts about monkey man is the twist it takes on the classic training montage trope, because in this film the hero isnt shaping up all on his lonesome, only his traumatic past and thirst for revenge as company, hes in a community. hes being supported and encouraged and literally healed by them, he takes strength from that community, and its so meaningful both to the character and to the audience, as a part of the film and its messaging. idk it was very refreshing to see, and very beautifully represented the specific cultural/contextual importance of community as well as just the universal human need for it especially in our current climate

The protagonist is named Kid in the credits. He is constantly surrounded by children who should not be in the situations that they have found themselves in. All of the children featured have been forced to grow up, and with the protag’s character name Kid, he has not moved on from the trauma of his childhood. This calls into question the lives of the children around him as his mother’s question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” haunts the narrative, showing that for many children, you do not get to choose.
