Singed: “I know you’re bleeding, but you’ll be okay.” (for wyn :3c)

He was the last person that she wanted to trust her well-being to, but what choice did she have? As he said, she was bleeding, and she also happened to be rather far from her shop and her usual support network. He was the only person she knew in her immediate surroundings, which meant that he was really the only one she could count on at the moment.

"The optimism is appreciated." she muttered, hands clasped firmly over the large gash in her leg. "You d-don't have anything I could use to wrap this, do you?"

"You've got a lovely face."

Her nose scrunched up a bit, his sweet compliment earning a smile that brightened her whole face.

"Yeah?" she asked as she draped her arms over Gerry's shoulders, the young woman on tip-toe so she could be as close to eye-level as possible.

"You're one to talk. Don't think I've ever seen someone quite as lovely as you." the necromancer hummed, leaning up so that she might press a sweet little kiss to the tip of his nose.

"Attention is something I try to avoid at all costs," he murmurs. To varying degrees of success, of course. He tries his best to keep a low profile at the university. The less the administration pays attention to him, the more longer he'll be able to stay. He doesn't want to move on just yet. He's happy here. Perhaps happier than he's ever deserved to be.

But he's not aging at a normal pace and he's in far too much demand because he's the young professor. It's only a matter of time before he becomes far too suspicious or someone walks in while he's drinking out of someone's wrist and...

He gasps, coming to his senses fully. In a motion that takes only a second or two, he slaps the bandaid onto her wrist and backs his chair a good meter away from her, burying his face in his hands. "Oh my God, I shouldn't have done that..." His mind has begun to swim with the what-ifs, all of them terrible. "I'm so sorry, Wyn. I shouldn't..." He's done so well up until now. So so well.

She had to imagine it was hard for him, but at the same time, he'd done a pretty great job at hiding himself for more than a few decades. He was better at keeping a low profile than most. They key was keeping one's head down and knowing when to get out when it was appropriate to do so, so as not to raise any suspicions.

Didn't want anyone asking why that one English professor who had to be pushing his forties, still looked like he was in his early twenties, after all.

Yeah, medical advancements had come a long way, and there was a cream or treatment for every aspect of aging, but they weren't that good. Not yet.

Apparently she'd shaken him from whatever place he'd retreated to within his own mind, because as she spoke he jolted a bit, pulling away suddenly as bandaids are quickly placed over the puncture marks. But he didn't stop there. He shoved his chair back and away from her, acting as if he'd just found out she was a carrier for the plague.

Her brow arched a bit as she rubbed her sore wrist, confusion coloring her pale features as he buried his face in his hands.

"Jack?" she asked. "Hey, are you alright? What's wrong? What do you mean you shouldn't have done that? I-I offered, it's okay."

"C'mon, look at me Jack. I'm fine." the woman insisted.

It still baffled Gerry that Wynter didn’t have experience in relationships.  She was beautiful and kind, and it seemed like more people would have taken an interest in her.  He had been surprised that she hadn’t been seeing anybody when he met her at that bar what felt like forever ago now, and he was expecting to be rejected back then, only to have her return interest.  It seemed neither one of them expected to get this far, and the whole thing was pretty laughable.

But it also made some sense, considering she likely hadn’t prioritized it much.  Between her powers and her store and her uncle, she had a lot going on in her own life, so it was no wonder why she hadn’t made time for something that might have seemed like a more frivolous pursuit.

“Excellent, I’m glad to hear it,” he said, reveling in the color of her cheeks.  He wasn’t going to hold her to dessert later, but seeing her intrigued by the idea was still adorable.  Since she had found herself enamored with him when he wasn’t trying, there was plenty of room to mess up here, which made it more fun.  He wasn’t likely to scare her off by being mildly cringe-inducing.

“What else do you have for me, then?” he asked, wringing hands ready to get busy, knowing the sooner he finished here, the closer he would be to desert.

If they had, they certainly hadn't approached her about it. So either she had a hell of a secret admirer list, or she just wasn't really on anyone's radar. Either way, it was fine. She'd kind of gotten used to her situation.

But then Gerry had come along, and christ help her, she realized everything she'd been missing out on.

He made her realize just how good it was to be cared for by someone, how good it was to hold someone, to kiss them...To share thoughts and secrets and quiet little moments. He made her feel like she was someone important, someone worth knowing and caring about. He made her feel loved, in his own way.

It was huge to her that he felt the same, that he shared her affection and attraction. After her initial confession, she'd been sure that she'd never see him again, but now look at them. Awkwardly flirting with one another like a couple of secondary students.

The cringe? She could handle it. He was worth it.

"Well, there are some boxes I need to bring down from upstairs and unpack, and a display that needs moving." she mused, mentally going over all of the tasks she'd been meaning to do, but lacked the manpower to take care of. "Moving the boxes first might be a good idea. The display will probably take a couple of days, since I've got to remove everything, pack it, move the display itself, and reset it."

A long project like that would be much better suited for a day where they were able to start much earlier in the morning. To start it that afternoon would mean cutting into their meal, and potentially, their dessert.

Ingvar sat in silence several moments. In his mind, however, his regrets were shouted at him: he should have done this, said that, valued them before the Goddess took them away. His lips pressed together, and he sighed, exhaling sharply through the nostrils.

"... Better to be having regret of... how it is going, than.... regret of not having done it, hm?" he posited, meeting Wynter's gaze at last.

Oh, she was in the same boat. Regrets haunted her as well, but she couldn't let herself linger on them. She'd made her decisions and stuck with them.

"That is very wise." she agreed with a little nod. "The regret of failing to do something, or just not doing that thing, can definitely be worse."

“You think I actually wanted to come to this? I was just hungry.”

Avatar

She damn near snorted into her glass of champagne at his answer, the bluntness of it taking her completely off guard. It took a moment for her to compose herself, and to make sure that she hadn't accidentally inhaled any of the sparkling wine.

"Y-Yeah?" she asked with a grin. "So you just decided it'd be better to come here and rub elbows with all of these academics than rather, say, head to the McDonald's drive thru?"

"I think a part of you, even just a little part, wanted to come."

indyflanery

Indy frowned down at his friend, not entirely sure if he wanted to admit she was right on some level. He did like conversing with people who respected his academic opinions, but he'd also had a lot of experience being forced to not argue about discussion topics thanks to his father. It was a knee jerk reaction to hate these types of events.

Unfortunately, he had to be the rational, non-obsessive family member in the academic circles on the East Coast. Wynter visiting him for a change unfortunately coincided with that reluctant commitment.

"I don't actually have to pay out of pocket for my dinner. And neither do you. That's about the only good part I can see to this," Indy answered, tugging at the bowtie around his neck irritably.

He didn't have to admit it, she wouldn't force him. But come on, it was a big deal and getting to rub elbows with the people in that room? Even bigger deal.

"That's nice at least. The big mac would have set us back at least a couple of dollars." she joked.

She reached up to still his hand, her smile softening. "Hey. It's okay, stop fidgeting." she murmured. "You look great, and if you keep messing with this, it's going to come undone. We're not going to be here for long, yeah? Just have to smile and wave for a little while more."
