Castiel Novak had known Dean Winchester his entire life. Growing up together, the two friends’ worlds revolved around one another, each of them looking forward to their annual summer get togethers at the Winchesters’ farm and winery, located in the rolling hills of Napa, California.

However, it only takes one night for seventeen years of friendship to all come crashing down. When Castiel confesses his feelings for Dean, his friend’s rancorous reaction sends him packing. Castiel leaves, and stays away for ten years.

When Dean’s father John falls ill, Castiel begrudgingly visits the farm again for the first time in a decade. Castiel is nervous to relive that night. He is nervous to be back at a place that holds so many memories. He is nervous to see Dean for the first time in so long.

While he grapples with his anger and hurt, he also has to grapple with the fact that the feelings he holds for Dean may still be there after all this time.

in a very real way in my mind’s eye I can watch a supernatural episode where somehow instead of going to the empty cas is in the underworld and I can hear the part of the dialogue where sam goes “according to the lore, once you make a deal with hades, the only thing you would need to do to get cas back is have him follow you out of there” and dean replies “so I just gotta throw a bone to some xena side character and frodo and sam hightail it back to the shire, no sidequest antics?” and sam clarifies like “well he just has to follow you out. the catch is that you can’t look back at him”

AND THEY WOULDN’T EVEN CAST EURYDICE 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

Whenever a hunt gets tough, it always starts fucking raining, because of course it does. Dean is practically knee-deep in mud, wondering if figuring out whatever has been terrorizing the forest in Middle-of-Nowhere, Nebraska is actually worth it. It’s just been him, his gun, and Cas for the past three hours, and they’ve gotten nowhere but deeper into the woods.

And, of course, Cas isn’t bothered by the rain because he’s a goddamn angel.

(Maybe Dean shouldn’t call him a goddamn angel, but, well, God has always seemed to hate the Winchesters, so what’s one more thing?)

Cas plods on in front of him, dragging his trench coat through the mud. Dean can practically hear him squinting as he says, “I think we’ve lost the creature, Dean.”

“No shit,” Dean mutters, and of course Cas can hear him, because he stops and turns around, glaring at him.

“Contrary to popular belief, it’s not my fault that it’s raining,” Cas says.

Dean rolls his eyes. “Let’s just get back to the Impala.” They could’ve used the Angel-of-the-Lord express to get here, but Dean doesn’t exactly love getting zapped, and he didn’t ask Cas to come on this hunt, anyways–Cas had just appeared in the passenger’s seat and Dean had nearly driven off of the highway and turned himself into a human pancake.

The trek back seems even longer, and by the time they get to the car, Dean is soaked through and longing for the motel shower that awaits him fifteen miles down the road. He slides into the driver’s seat and cranks Baby’s engine, and Cas gets in on the other side.

“Let me,” Cas says, reaching out and laying a hand on Dean’s shoulder. All of the mud vanishes in a moment, and Dean’s jeans are actually comfortable for the first time in hours.

Dean turns to look at him, and Cas is looking back.

Maybe now would be a good time to ask why Cas decided to come on this hunt, why he always seems to have Dean’s back. Dean opens his mouth, question on the tip of his tongue–

And then whatever they were hunting in the forest slams into the Impala’s windshield.

Did Cas and Rufus ever meet......I feel like Cas would like him immediately (Rufus is quite straightforward, easy to understand) and impronts on him like a baby duckling. He would spend any spare moment at Rufus's on standby mode staring into space like a statue until someone spoke to him. Rufus would be confused and irritated by this to start with but when he eventually believes that this is genuinely how Cas spends time with people he gets extremely smug about it and he and Cas have a lot of chats late into the night about eternity and legacy and what it means to be human.

I think Rufus teaches Cas how to play cards, and then how to cheat at cards, then they have a tag team scam game night where they scheme Bobby and Dean out of all their cash (Sam is there but he figures it out and takes no part).

After their first introduction Rufus comes downstairs in the middle of the night and jumps out of his skin to see Cas just standing 🧍‍♂️ with his eyes glowing blue (he's recorganising the atoms in the dust motes. This is fun for him.)

And at first he's majorly suspicious but he can read Cas as sincere when he just straight out says 'I enjoy your company' and whatever it's 3am, so he gets them each an orange juice and gets Cas to sit with him at the table to talk, both because 'I won't sleep with a stranger in the house. So let's make you less strange' and because he is a curious about him.

Rufus asks Cas all the questions about angel society that team free will don't bother with, and Cas doesn't ask him any back because he doesn't know he should (this changes by the end of the morning because Rufus's observations make him curious back). This chat and many subsequent ones makes Rufus a foremost expert on angels and he's extremely smug about it, and he's trustworthy so he doesn't reveal anything that would betray Cas’s trust. He even keeps his source a secret until Cas holds his hand out for the phone to Bobby to correct something Bobby says on the other end one time. (Bobby is very frustrated that Cas never told HIM these important details and Cas is like '🤨 how am I supposed to know what you deem important. You think cars are important.' and Rufus falls out of his chair laughing at Cas’s audacity. It's the first time he touches Cas with camaraderie.)

Oh I didn't finish the thought on that last one. They end up basically holding hands whenever they're sat next to each other bc they're friends and it's nbd between them and they're both so casual about it that nobody who knows them both reads it as unusual.

This bonding is all behind the scenes of team free will stuff btw nobody knows they're besties until Cas is like listing off the reasons he has to fight for humanity, 'my friends...no, my family. Bobby, the Winchesters, Ellen, Jo, Ash. Rufus.' and afterwards Dean is like 'why the hell did Rufus make the list. You met him once 6 months ago.' (Dean remembers bc Cas said in the car afterwards, unprompted and easy, 'I liked him.' and Dean, half joking half jealous, had said 'not as much as you like me.' and Cas had said nothing (not seeing it as a question) and Sam cracked up, 'ice cold' and Dean, embarrassed, had turned up the radio the rest of the way.)

Anyway Cas says they're close friends and salmon dean are convinced he's got the wrong end of the stick bc Rufus doesn't like many people (or, he doesn't like rudeness, which is the Winchester default) until they all go over to Rufus's for an artifact and Rufus greets Cas with a hug and sends him to the kitchen to make the coffees, and greets them with 'what do you want.'

Sometimes Rufus will be having a drink with someone at his table and then Cas just appears behind them to 🧍and Rufus is so used to him by now he doesn't acknowledge him so when the person catches him from the corner of their eye they also jump out of their skin and Rufus thinks this is funny so he never tells people when Cas is there.

Rufus comes to know about the nature of destiel because one time Dean is the one sat at the table with Cas appearing silently and Dean brings up their (Dean and Rufus's) night of passion (it happened, you're on board) and Cas, for the first time, knocks over a stack of books by accident bc he's so surprised and disappears when Dean spins around and sees him. Dean looks back at Rufus, freaked, and Rufus, quickly understanding and a bit of a bastard (affectionate) says 'ah I knew it. Cas has a little crush. On me.' and Dean is like. Losing it. 'I have to leave immediately.'

Rufus talks to Cas about it when he flies back in later that night, 'So. You and the Winchester boy.' and after a moment Cas just nods, and asks 'Do you think he suspects anything?' 'No, don't worry. I covered for you.'

Also when Rufus is out on hunts Cas will appear behind him and take down a demon that was about to get him and Rufus says 'thanks Cas' without needing to turn around. When he does, Cas is gone again.

One time Rufus gets a really bad head cold and refuses to let Cas heal him because he's extremely stubborn, but Cas looks so anxious about it, hovering close (he usually sticks to being across the room unless they're sat down) and wringing his hands, that Rufus sighs and says 'you can make me some tea. If you really want to help.' And it does help, and heck, it does feel kind of nice to be looked after, so Rufus adds 'and you can get me a hot towel. And another blanket from the airing cupboard. Make me some soup.'

To anyone else it would read as orders, but between them it's understood as it's really meant, permission to care. Cas likes the clear instructions and Rufus likes that Cas doesn't try to tell him to feel better.

S7 honey!cas comes over with Meg a few times (rufus doesn't die shut up) and they're like new cats meeting each other for the first time (Rufus keeps spraying Meg with a holy water spray bottle) until Cas looks at them and goes '🥺 don't fight 🥺' and they're both disarmed for a moment and then look at each other like. Fuck I just showed you a weakness of mine. Uneasy truce. Rufus makes Meg sit in a devils trap whenever they're over and she's annoyed but Cas is happy to be there so she puts up with it.

Cas, who has become extremely good at reading both of them because they will explain how they're feeling if he's ever doubtful, translates out loud what they mean when they're snarky or flippant (like, ahem, this meg and cas fic of mine) and they both get fondly exasperated with this but the evidence that they do both care about and respect Cas a lot, and Rufus seeing that Meg is stuck in an impossible situation with trying to work against hell while Meg is coming to see Rufus as a figure of admiration as someone who did successfully almost entirely retire from hunting on his own terms because of his self respect all lead towards a weird little friendship of their own.

They have a major breakthrough after over a month of hanging out when Cas brings Rufus a bottle of aged scotch (he was so excited to see it while out with Meg that he immediately picked it up and zapped them both to Rufus's house. He does not recognise that this is 'stealing' as 'why should they claim to own it if they haven't even tasted it.') and Rufus stretches across the border of the devils trap to hand Meg a glass of it too.

They end up with a private joke that Cas HATES where Meg makes a come on to Rufus and Rufus replies with 'sorry, I don't do dead girls' and it's mostly funny to them because Cas gets so huffy about it.

Cas joins in with Rufus's old man hobby of whittling for a while after Rufus shows him how to do it and he keeps on whittling the sticks down into nothing (he's fascinated by how to whole can become nothing, but then he becomes melancholy when it's done) until Rufus says he could do something useful instead and shows him how to finger-knit like Rufus's mom used to do. Next time Rufus sees Dean he has 3 new knitted loops around his wrist and a 5 hanging around the mirror in the Impala. When Cas clocks Rufus looking at them he blushes and avoids eyecontact.

Next time he sees Bobby he spots several used as bookmarks too, and Bobby says 'shut up. You try saying not saying yes to him when he brings one. It's like kicking a puppy.' 'I don't say yes to shit. You're just soft.' Just so happens Cas pops up with one for Rufus a second later and, without asking, hangs it around Rufus's neck as a necklace and vanishes again. Rufus tucks it under the neck of his shirt to join 4 others from the past week and scowls at Bobby laughing at him. 'Gone a little soft there yourself, old man.' 'Hey, did you hear me say yes? No word of a lie from me.' (but he's smiling too).
