this is my piece for the 2021 @grishaversebigbang ! this is the first time I've participated in this sort of event before and I'm so happy I got the chance to finally do so!

if you are using white models as face claims for zoya or for alina in your edits you are whitewashing them. if you use white models as the basis for your fanart of alina or zoya you are whitewashing them. it does not matter that their ethnicities are not specified in the original grisha trilogy- zoya is half suli and alina is half shu. they are not white, and if you portray them as so you are whitewashing them.

Look as far as Alina is concered I have to say this: My dude👏🏻it’s 👏🏻too👏🏻 fucking 👏🏻hard 👏🏻to find any videos or photos of Jessie Mei Li or of Asian/biracial girls in period costumes that resemble keftas. So when making photo or video edits we have to sometimes compromise and you don’t get to call that whitewashing. As for the fan art- you do know that it’s canon that Alina is white in the books and half Shu in the show, right?. However someone chooses to potray Alina is therefore correct and valid. Please don’t discourage people from participating in fun stuff like edits and fan art because you are taking it too seriously and trying to make this about sth other than it is.

P.S. I agree with you on how Zoya should be portrayed.

Sounds like a failure on your part. Retcons happen. No new edits should have her as white. She wasn’t even described as white, y'all just assume racial backgrounds.

SUMMARY:

Having moved to California after being freed from Virginia’s foster system, Nina is missing her life on the east coast, and most importantly, Waffle House. Horrified that her Californian friends Inej and Jesper have never even heard of the best waffle chain ever, Nina takes them on an epic road trip across America in search of some decent breakfast food, along with the chance to get with the girl she’s always had a crush on, a boy running from his father, and maybe a taste of her old life again.

Wylan wants nothing more than to run. He feels trapped living with a father who is ashamed to have a moron for a son. When Jan Van Eck announces that Wylan will be studying at an all-boys boarding school in a small town in Virginia, he feels a flicker of hope for a better future, but the road leading up to it is long and dangerous.
