It’s better to “ruin the mood” by asking for consent than to ruin the mood by touching someone against their will.
The worst case scenarios for the first option are
- they may get confused and say something like “Yeah, of course I want this, why are you asking? Did I do something wrong?”. Now you get to be romantic and explain that you just wanted to make sure they’re happy. It may feel a bit awkward and take a minute to get back to touching after that short interuption. You both still have a fun time.
- they say “No, I’m sorry, I don’t want to do this”. Now you get to be romantic and explain that you just want them to be happy, so of course you won’t do anything that doesn’t feel good for them. It may feel a bit awkward and take a minute until you decide to watch a movie together instead. You both still have a fun time.
In both cases, the worst thing was a moment of awkwardness. Your relationship is not destroyed, their trust in you is not destroyed, they’re not emotionally scarred. You just had to endure a moment of embarassement.
With the second option? Well, there the worst-case-scenarios range from “You make them feel uncomfortable and unsafe” to “You traumatize them”.
