We’ve been cancelling Russia since the 50’s

this bear? cancelled

this mountain? fucking cancelled

FUCK this lake

some people born hundreds of years after this thing was built suck shit so this building is now cancelled

MOSCOW? do you know who LIVES in Moscow?? like a lot of people actually, but also some bad people so NO PICTURES OF MOSCOW

COOL BUT CANCELLED. What happens in that building?? CORRUPTION probably, I don’t know, I didn’t look up what it was, but I know it’s in RUSSIA and we all know what HAPPENS IN RUSSIA

this SERENE yet ALIEN LANDSCAPE has been declared PROBLEMATIC

oh, do you like this?? do you find it…. ….””aesthetic””??? apparently you don’t know that Faberge eggs were popularized by Tsar Alexander III, who REVERSED MANY OF THE LIBERAL REFORMS OF HIS FATHER and can eat shit in general. that’s right Russia, I’m pulling receipts from 1885.

CANCELLED

Russia is a beautiful place and I will reblog as many pictures of it as I fucking want to.

we all love and appreciate russia here. just bc the government might be bad doesn’t mean the entire country is made of douchebags

slavic culture is not inherently evil!! slavic culture is beautiful and diverse and deserves to be shared and admired!!

Anti Mals complaining that Show Mal was made so much better or more "boyfriend material" than Book Mal are completely delusional

Similarly Anti Darklings saying Show Darkling was romanticized and was made more likeable than Book Darkling are in the wrong

SAB show was not through Alina's POV and I thank God everyday for that. We got to see Mal's own story through his words and we got see darkling's action and his own (wrong but still) justification. Show gave us a broader picture of both characters and made us see them through their own eyes, not through Alina's lens

So when I watched the show I loved Mal. And hated the darkling (the way we're supposed to).

When I read the book I felt like Mal actually had MORE depth (although we don't see ot all from Alina's POV)...and I loved him even more.

It made me feel like the show took too much away from Mal in favor of making people like him more. Like it works fine, and obviously I still stan him... but I liked that the book showed them having tension in a stressful situation. The book took Mal's loss of his buddies more seriously. It lets him be angry and emotional and a little jealous and HUMAN. Given a broader POV, the show could have really given us more insight about how Mal felt seeing Alina. I liked how in the book Mal and Alina have to readjust to each other after life-changing events that they'd both had apart. I feel the show runners didn't want to risk people not liking Mal... so they just reworked it. Like they were afraid to work through the common complaints that people have with Mal so they changed bits and pieces about Mal that made his character more layered in the books... in the show he just gets beat up a lot for her.

But imagine if Mal had gotten out of the war room and seen not Alina's "twin" Marie, but Alina herself... with the blue irises... smiling at the wrong man. Smiling at the Darkling. He can't say anything or let the Darkling see him... but he sees her leave with the Darkling. Then after Marie is killed by the conductor, the Darkling sends Alina to her room for safety and there Mal walks in like "I don't trust the darkling... come on, let's go" and she's like "I can't just leave" and he looks at the flowers like "what because he gave you flowers?" But he won't say that he told the darkling what kind to get her. And so they have an disagreement based on this misinformation and he leaves. And that could add so much more meaning to Mal's choice to follow Alina anyway. Because he knows the darkling lied to her at least about the flowers, he knows something is up with the stag, he knows that his friends died, that he's about to desert the army, and all this while they were fighting.

In the book Mal also suggests they find the stag, which I think is a good way of showing that he isn't just about running away, but helping Alina fight for her freedom.

When I rewatched the show I did see signs that the writers were leaning into the "sympathetic" side of the darkling too.

That being said it's still perfectly clear that in both the show and the books Mal is the only one for Alina and the Darkling is bad.

So you’re telling me that we got a Darkling/Alina kiss after them having two conversations, but don’t get a Mal and Alina kiss after they literally grew up together?!

TBH after reading the books and rewatching episode 6/7, I feel EVEN MORE robbed. Like we just jumped right to the end of book 1 , but there was some really beautiful MALINA CONTENT that we missed.

Like, finding the stag was so impactful in the book because they were losing hope and Alina was like "if the Darkling finds me, KILL ME. Promise me!"

and IDK I just liked the way the books put so much weight on their reunion and the way they'd both changed and then the SPEECH right before they FIND THE STAG? 👌👌

“I was happy,” I admitted. “In that moment, I was happy. I’m not like you, Mal. I never really fit in the way that you did. I never really belonged anywhere.” “You belonged with me,” he said quietly. “No, Mal. Not really. Not for a long time.” He looked at me then, and his eyes were deep blue in the twilight. “Did you miss me, Alina? Did you miss me when you were gone?” “Every day,” I said honestly. “I missed you every hour. And you know what the worst part was? It caught me completely by surprise..."

also fun fact that vietnam war ended in 1975 that was only 44 years ago i don’t care how hard it was for us veterans to kill people. two millions poor people died in that war, thousands of children are still born with tremendous health problems due to the effect of chemical bombings (the orange agent to be specific) i’m tired of hollywood making movies about the vietnam war and focus on how brave white people are for killing n terrorizing us

not to mention there are still around 80 million unexploded bombs in Laos alone which is making farmers afraid to work their land, keeping the country as one as the poorest in the world. 50 000 people have been killed by unexploded bombs in Laos since the end of the war, 75% of whom were children

more bombs were dropped on Vietnam than the entirety of World War 2. it wasn’t even really a war as much as a genocide and planned environmental catastrophe with napalm, bombs, agent orange, etc.

*stands up*

DARKLINA'S STORY WAS NEVER ABOUT LOVE. IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT ALINA'S POWERS AND THE WAY SHE MADE ALEKSANDER FEEL ABOUT HIMSELF. IT WAS NEVER, NEVER ABOUT HER. YOU CAN SHIP IT? OF COURSE YOU CAN, AS LONG AS YOU AKNOWLEDGE ALL THE BAD THINGS IN IT AND STOP TRYING TO CONVINCE PEOPLE THIS IS A LOVE STORY AND ALEKSANDER ISN'T ACTUALLY A VILLAIN. HE MANIPULATED, ENSLAVED AND TORTURED ALINA. HE TORTURED GENYA. HE KILLED EVERYONE AT ALINA'S CHILDHOOD HOME AND DESTROYED THE PLACE.

HE CREATED THE FOLD, AND DIDN'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO WOULD DIE BECAUSE OF THAT.

HE IS, IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE, A GENOCIDE.

HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH ALINA WAS NEVER DIFFERENT FROM ANY OTHER SIDE OF HIM. IT WAS FOR HIS OWN BENEFIT.

AND THIS FANDOM NEEDS TO STOP ROMANTICIZING IT SO MUCH.

When Mal says to Alina "you don't owe me an explanation" it was so refreshing to hear. We know what he has gone through to get to her, the pain and the sacrifice. We've seen him perservere regardless because he just needs to make sure shes ok and protect her anyway he can like she's always protected him. It doesn't even matter if she doesn't choose him back because he just wants to make sure she is safe. There's no entitlement there, Alina is her own person not his possession. He chooses her above all else with no expectation. In conclusion - I adore him.

Ruin and Rising: Mal & Alina's faith in each other's ability

Chapter 2:

“How did you know I’d be able to summon?” I asked under my breath.
He glanced at me, and a faint grin touched his lips. “Faith.”

Chapter 7:

“Thirty says she can hit the one behind it.”
I whirled. Mal was leaning against the archway, his arms crossed.
“That peak is over five miles away,” I protested.
“More like six,” he said breezily, a challenge in his eyes. It was as if we were back at Keramzin, and he was daring me to steal a bag of sweet almonds or luring me out onto Trivka’s pond before the ice had set. I can’t, I’d say. Of course you can, he’d reply, gliding away from me on borrowed skates, the toes stuffed with paper, never turning his back, making sure I would follow.

Chapter 17:

“Bring him back to me,” I repeated. I wasn’t making sense. I knew that. They didn’t have Morozova’s power. But Mal could make rabbits out of rocks. He could find true north standing on his head. He would find his way back to me again.
