An even better change for the Hollywood sign

I want to preface this by saying I'm not upset with the band at all, I just feel...weird and want to share.

As the person who created the original TMBG Hollywood image, it has been very strange to see it show up all over They Might Be Giants social media, email lists, and more since the announcement of them opening for Sparks at the Hollywood Bowl. It (with some text added advertising that show) is still their cover image on Facebook.

This was the one photo edit I made that was reposted to tmbgareok without me submitting it. And I am proud of that! Proud that Flans saw what I made and liked it enough to want to share it with the whole TMBG-world.

But I wasn't ever credited for it... Not then and not now. And that was pretty standard for tmbg's tumblr in 2017. The best images were clearly being saved in a folder on someone's computer without the creator attached and being reposted whenever things were slow. I'm actually super stoked that this edit made enough of an impression that it was remembered all these years later and dug out to use. I had no expectation of credit at the time, and I felt that expectation covered the band's later use of it when promoting the Hollywood Bowl show.

Eventually, they had the same concept completely redone in black and white, with lights behind, and the re-do is inherently nicer than the original. (It would be, having been done by a professional rather than a college student with nothing but shaky photo-editing skills and an all-abiding love for their music.) But it is still clearly based on my idea, my image was definitely used as a reference. Which is why I feel like it is still my idea, my design if not my personal work.

Which is why I feel a bit weird that they are now selling a T-shirt with the re-design on it.

To be clear: I don't feel like I am owed anything here. It was a silly idea based on a news story at the time and the waters are too muddied for me to claim any real ownership of it even if I wanted to. But I do feel that there have been some missteps on tmbg's part and it feels uncomfortable to be on the other side of it.

Obviously this isn't new, they've been selling the shirt for months. But I've been trying to put it out of my mind ever since and failing, so I thought I would at least share the story here.
