Honestly? My main piece of advice for writing well-rounded characters is to make them a little bit lame. No real living person is 100% cool and suave 100% of the time. Everyone’s a little awkward sometimes, or gets too excited about something goofy, or has a silly fear, or laughs about stupid things. Being a bit of a loser is an incurable part of the human condition. Utilize that in your writing.

I'm not like Mad at anyone who does this and I'm obviously not in charge of how anyone else tags shit on their own blogs, whatever, but it's always bummed me out when my sex Ed posts get reblogged and tagged with 18+, minors dni, etc. personally I actually very much want teenagers to learn about their bodies and safer sex but I guess I'm just the guy who wrote the thing.

by and large I am not an angry man but once I watched a fellow sex educator present to a room full of college students and, upon being gently challenged by one of the students who objected to them describing sex as something that happens between adults, said with very palpable disdain "I don't want to talk about kids fucking." and I was so angry about it that I made myself nauseous.

not just teens, either. every couple years I give up my Sundays for a few months to teach sex ed to 4th-6th graders, unpaid. and I don't do it because it's always fun or easy or great for my health, I do it because those are human people with changing bodies and feelings who deserve to have someone who gives a shit take the time to talk honestly with them so that they might make less painful mistakes later.

and the ironic thing is that teaching comprehensive sex ed as young as possible (to an age appropriate extent of course) is like literally the best way to keep kids safe bc it allows them to know if what’s happening to them is wrong. especially since the most likely abuser is a parent. who’s obviously not going to teach them that they deserve bodily autonomy. it sounds icky but teaching kids about sex is what lets them know if they’re being raped, and unfortunately a scarily high amount of kids are preyed upon.

There are so many studies supporting a direct correlation between comprehensive sex ed and lower teen pregnancy rates. The places that don’t have sex ed are the ones rampant with teen moms because they just didn’t know until it was too late. I know it’s uncomfortable to acknowledge, but teenagers are going to have sex. It’s inevitable.

Yes it’s a difficult subject to breach with kids, but the goal is ultimately teaching them how to protect themselves. It’s not a coincidence that a lot of politicians (at least in my country) who want to ban sex ed altogether are also the ones in support of keeping child marriage legal. These sick bastards want children to stay ignorant so they’re easier to prey upon.

Don’t drink their Kool-aid. Educate your children. Stop thinking of it as just “teaching kids about sex” and start thinking of it as “teaching kids how to protect themselves from unsafe sex.”

Also OP flat-out ignores that intersex people exist and that you’re statistically as likely to meet an intersex person as you are to meet a natural redhead.

In fact, you’re probably more likely to meet someone who was born intersex because doctors will often alter intersex babies’ genitalia to force them to fit into the gender binary, and this is often left out of medical records and is sometimes even done without consulting the parents. You guys rlly don't realise how much knowledge is still not committed to the internet. I find books all the time with stuff that is impossible to find through a search engine- most people do not put their magnum opus research online for free and the more niche a skill is the less likely you are to have people who will leak those books online. (Nevermind all the books written prior to the internet that have knowledge that is not considered "relevant" enough to digitise).

Whenever people say that we r growing up with all the world's knowledge at our fingertips...it's not necessarily true. Is the amount of knowledge online potentially infinite? Yes. Is it all knowledge? No. You will be surprised at the niche things you can discover at a local archive or library.
