if you dissociate hard enough you can eavesdrop on conversations you’re a part of

you and joe laying in bed. your head on his chest. eye’s closed, peacefully asleep. the baby monitor on the bedside table starts to whimper. you groan. getting up, you start to move your legs off the bed. joe’s arm around you pulls you back towards him. “and where do you think you’re going?”. you sigh again, unable to form words so early in the morning. a kiss on your forehead. his touch vanishes. his warmth slipping out from underneath you. you know you should object. it’s definitely not his turn. but the door’s slowly closing behind him before you can even mumble a protest. stretching out on the empty bed, quickly falling asleep again. joe’s coo’s fill the room through the monitor. the gentle crying from your daughter quickly disappears. footsteps back down the hall. door creaks open. a weight on the bed. you allow him to slide in next to you, moving your head back onto his chest. his arms envelop you again. barely awake, you can’t help but smile.
