i see so much derision directed towards boygenius online for no apparent reason besides the fact that they seem to have “come out of nowhere”?????? but the truth is boygenius has been a monolith staple in certain music circles for years now and their meteoric rise to popularity only seems sudden bc from an outsiders perspective phoebe got adopted by taylor swift and theyve just been riding on the coattails since. which in a way is a little true but they absolutely have been doing their own thing for so long now - theyre not the nepo baby industry implants that ppl seem hellbent on painting them to be and i wish ppl would stop thinking this

this outburst comes from a tiktok comment section of a video where someone is talking about how carly rae jepsen is underrated (which is very true!!!!) except they add at the end shes opening for boygenius to which they believe that in another life (presumably the one the poster prefers) boygenius would be opening for crj. anyway all this to say boygenius HAS been doing the thing!!!!!! dont let your biases blind you!!!!!!!

More stories from hell (retail) today I was ringing up this lady and she goes oh I want to do part of this on a gift card and the rest on normal card and I go ok and then she hands me a folded piece of paper. I think oh OK it must be folded around the gift card, right? Wrong. It is a folded sheet of 8×11 printer paper with "$40" written on the inside in ballpoint pen. I go what is this. She says a gift card. I say this is not a gift card. She says yes it is. I say this is a piece of paper with "$40" written on it. She says "well it's a gift card." I say it absolutely is not. I am grinding my teeth. She says well I want to use it. I say you physically cannot do that bc it is a piece of paper. I cannot scan or swipe it. I apologize, as if this is my fault, and not because she is completely insane. I hate it here

obviously not taylor’s fault but i think phoebe’s proximity to taylor swift and subsequently her proximity to taylor’s fanbase has been one of the leading causes of the deranged kind vitriol she’s been receiving from weirdos and internet quote-unquote music critics online. like she’s not indie enough for the male musicbros anymore but not pop enough for the general public. like i’ve seen comparisons between boygenius and big thief twice now (from random commentators online but still, it’s notable that they would draw comparisons between the two bands in the first place) and frankly i think they have very little in common except being critically acclaimed female singer-songwriter led bands and popular with the indie tear-your-heart-out music crowd. except now boygenius is experiencing mainstream fame (in no small part to taylor, if anyone’s seen the comments for bg’s latest insta it’s full of people going “here bc taylor told me <3”) and people contrast them against big thief as the band that sold out (boygenius) and the band that’s stayed true to their roots (big thief). it’s maddening and frustrating and unfair to not only phoebe, lucy and julien but to adrianne and the rest of big thief too. wish people could be normal about women
