FE Winter Exchange
This is a gift for @vokter-av-kongeriker ! I decided to write something for maribelle and lissa at their New Year’s party in a modern au. I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed writing it! Maribelle/Lissa is just such a cute ship so I was stoked that I got to write a piece for them. (I based the nickname and some parts of the story to @unassumingvenusaur ‘s Maribelle and Lissa S support conversation, and it was also a big help in shaping this piece because I had no idea how to get it off the ground ahhh )
Just in case you get confused, “Mar” is Lissa’s nickname for Maribelle. I figured it would fit Lissa, although a friend pointed out that it is the nickname Tikki used for Marth in past games. Thank you @fe-gift-exchange for hosting this, it’s been really fun and, as always, I enjoyed it very much! Without further ado, here’s the story!
“Hey, Mar, what do you think would look better?” Lissa held the two banners in her arms delicately. Maribelle turned to her wife, and paused for a moment, holding the platter of food that Frederick had cooked for the New Year’s party they were hosting for their friends.
“Hrm…the both of them would indeed look nice, but-” Maribelle placed the finger food on the table beside her and walked up to Lissa, and picked the silver banner that spelled “Happy New Year!” written in thick, cursive letters from her arms before ascending the ladder to place the first half of the banner up in the centre of the room.
“This one. Did you pick it, love?”
“Hey! That’s supposed to be my job!” Lissa was already under Maribelle, holding the ladder steady as she adjusted the banner with a small pout on her face. Maribelle met her eyes as she descended down the ladder, giggling as she kissed her on the cheek.
“Sorry, darling; I couldn’t help myself!” Lissa grinned back as she moved the ladder to the middle section and held the banner and ladder for Maribelle. While she was climbing up the ladder, she replied to her question.
“And yes, I did pick it out. How did you know?” Maribelle gestured for the banner, and Lissa passed it to her.
“You always have such good taste in everything. That, and you’ve always had a knack for finding things that you know I’ll simply adore.” With the banner secured on the nails that usually held picture frames, and Maribelle placing the platter with the rest of the food in a table to the side, she pulled the fairy lights from the packet, she called out to Frederick, who was finishing up in the kitchen.
“Frederick, can you help out with the lights for a minute?”
Maribelle and Lissa, after a quick thank you and farewell to Frederick until later that night, quickly got ready. Lissa only got to see a glimpse of the finished product of the decorated living room of their apartment before Maribelle called on her opinion of her final outfit.
“Coming!” Lissa opened the door to their bedroom and stopped in her tracks as Maribelle turned and gave her a smile
Maribelle wore an elegant yet simple burgundy dress, with a golden necklace adorned with rubies that Lissa had picked out for her while Christmas shopping with Robin. Lissa could’ve sworn she’d felt her heart skip a beat. She let herself be captivated a while longer, let herself stare at her wife’s figure a little while longer then she should because she could… Because they were married now.
Because they were together now. She didn’t have to restrain herself anymore; she had to remind herself that they were not “just friends” anymore, even after all this time.
“Darling, surely I don’t look so good that you’re having trouble speaking?” Maribelle smirked slightly, and if it weren’t for the blush tinting her cheeks Lissa would’ve mistaken that expression akin to the one that she would have when she cornered her opposing counsel in the courtroom.
“You’re just so beautiful, Mar, I can’t help but be short of breath,” Lissa added with a giggle. Maribelle opened her mouth to reply when the doorbell rang, signalling the first of their guests. Lissa kissed her cheek, and then the other, with a quick kiss on her wife’s lips.
“You don’t mind welcoming Chrom and Freddie in, do you? I have to get those shoes on,” Lissa gestured to the white pumps awaiting her feet in disdain, Maribelle laughing at her expression. She gave her one last kiss, and Maribelle shook her head, smiling, and walked over to the main entrance to bring the first of the guests inside.
The rest of the night was filled with reunions, catch-ups, and New Year’s resolutions that no-one was planning on committing to, and by 10 minutes till the New Year, Lissa had ushered Maribelle to the balcony to watch the fireworks. Lissa looked out at the bustling city of Ylisse, the cool air hitting her face. The party had originally been her idea, and while it was just as enjoyable as she’d hoped, she was also beginning to tire of the party and the people, for she wanted the last moments of the year- and the early moments of the New Year- with her wife.
“Darling?” At the sound of Maribelle’s questioning voice, Lissa stopped, turned and grinned at her.
“What’s up?” Lissa had no idea what was going through her wife’s mind as Maribelle turned to her, and gave her a small smile, both arms resting gently held her waist as she rested her head on her shoulder.
“I love you,” Maribelle whispered into her ear and Lissa giggled, touching her cheek.
“And I love you too, Mar…where is this coming from?” Lissa said softly. Maribelle was still staring in awe at her, and continued, her cheeks flaring.
“I just-I’ve only ever dreamed of this, my love. Being with you, living with you, being your wife- and now, spending every New Year’s with you for the rest of my days. It was always in the wildest of my dreams, and now- you’re here, with me- you look stunning; you always do, but tonight you look even more beautiful and I can’t help but think that this is all just a dream-” Maribelle looked away for a moment, and turned back to her, tears welling in her eyes.
“Goodness, look at me, darling! This was supposed to be romantic.” Maribelle started to fan her eyes, but stopped as Lissa held her face in her hands, and gently kissed her eyes, catching her tears as they fell.
“But this is. This is our special moment- it’s just you and me, here, it’s okay to get emotional. I’m so glad that you’re my wife-I mean-I’ve never seen myself with anyone but you. And don’t worry- I’ll always be here to pinch your arm to remind you that this is reality if you need it. ” With that, Lissa gave Maribelle a light pinch on the arm and leaned in to give her a sweet kiss. They parted just as someone cleared their throat.
“It’s two minutes until the New Year, you don’t mind if we join you?” Chrom asked. Maribelle shook her head, and everyone shuffled in together for the group photo. Sumia set up a tripod while Cordelia set up a camera, placing it on the tripod and standing behind it.
“Just a little closer! Don’t forget to smile!” Cordelia checked the camera one last time before joining Sumia and sat with the group to count down.
“Hey Mar?” Lissa whispered and Maribelle tilted her head toward her.
“3, 2,1-” Lissa turned and caught her lips with her own just as the camera flashed.
