Hello Tumblr, I am on you for once in a blue moon :)

Tagged by @cassiopeiasara to post the last sentence I wrote in my current WIP. It happens to be quite a crucial one, so here you go:

"Hecate knew this was her chance to retreat from the moment of closeness as she always had before, but Ada's impossible smile had diverted them onto a path leading in a completely different direction."

Not tagging anyone else because I have no idea who already did this.

maybe its the terrible nature of the politics of my country currently, maybe its the fact that hindutva and modi have collectively managed to ruin any chances i have of a future in the city i love without being in jail, but these days i just find myself borrowing bravery from books. i don’t know what to tell you guys - except that as anyone in india would tell you, i desperately need good news. i need someone to have done something good - the smallest good thing, the smallest, tiniest moment of clarity in an increasingly grim sky - i need it so badly. i need bravery, i need courage - because im properly running short on my own supply. i’ve been stealing goodwill from harry potter, pilfering my supplies of happiness through Ghibli movies, and desperately keeping love sustained through pride and prejudice. every time i feel my fear reigning, when i feel terrified of going to a protest because the police has started recording our faces now and god god god i don’t want to go to jail so badly, i want to give up. i want to let the hopelessness become my reality, i want to let myself go. i want to stop fighting.

but then terry pratchett would not like it.

i have a duty to this world. i have a duty to this world. i have a duty to this world. i put on my armour for him, because i can’t stand the thought of being the kind of person tiffany aching would pity. i borrow my courage from her because i am so so so tired.

if you’re reading this, this post was your sign of something good. i cannot be alone here: borrow some courage from me - i know mine is short in supply, but im sparing a little for you. i am not ashamed of begging for courage on the internet, i need it desperately. if you can share some of yours, i’d be so grateful.

Discworld community, please add in sending support to our friend.

Okay, so. It’s like this.

What courage isn’t begged, borrowed, or bought from someone, somewhere, or something else?

Courage doesn’t just appear in your mind or soul. You aren’t born with the courage to withstand all or even most of life’s hardships. Bravery isn’t innate. You may be brave because you have the support of your family and it’s made you resilient. You may be brave because you don’t have the support of your family and it’s made you tough. You may be brave because you’ve been inspired by your mother. Or your grandfather. Or a historical figure. Or a character in a book.

You may be brave because you’ve been desperate, and you know you can survive. You may be brave because you’ve seen others survive this and if they could do it, then maybe you can too. You may be brave because you’re scared out of your mind and you don’t know if you can face what’s ahead of you, but Carrie Fisher said to stay afraid but do it anyway because the confidence would follow, and you always admired her courage and confidence. You may be brave because you’re just that much more afraid of giving up on yourself.

You may be brave because an author from another country wrote some silly books about a magic world that grew into a series of increasingly-less-silly novels about humans and how we work and why we are the way that we are, for better or worse. You may be brave because you read about this young girl who wanted to be a witch so she could protect her land and people, and the part where she decides to use selfishness as a weapon lit a match in your mind. Or because you read about this depressed, alcoholic Watch officer who started off drunk in a gutter but ended up saving the city from a dragon, and he made it sound possible. Or because you read about this kid in a bloody theocracy whose god got stuck in the form of a tortoise, and what he said about how in a hundred years we’ll all be dead but here and now we are alive

Just because it’s fictional doesn’t mean it isn’t real. The effect that fiction and the written word has on us as a species is documented through all of history, and there’s no reason to believe that the power of stories over us began when we started writing them down. Stories have always had the power to change our perceptions, our minds, how we think and what we do. That’s… kind of the point. Fairy tales warned children to stay out of the forest, Aesop told his fables to model the right behavior, legend after legend after legend of famous great kings and warriors who were good and brave and pure of heart – all explicitly meant to inspire and change the hearts of men and women.

You’re not weak for finding courage in fiction. You’re following in the footsteps of your ancestors throughout the history of humankind.

Bravery – and hope, the scaffolding it’s built on – borrowed from a book is the exact same as the bravery and hope you get from anywhere else. It always starts from outside you, it’s always a little flame you take into your soul and hold onto in the darkness.

Feed that flame with the Discworld. Feed it with Jane Austen. Feed it with fantasy and tales of magic. Let fiction convince you that things can go right sometimes, because they can, but only if you don’t give up on the belief that they might.

Just... This.

The Worst Witch Winter Warmers 2019

It’s getting towards that most wonderful time of the year!

I’m aware that this is suuper late compared to last year but!! I hope you’re all keen to continue the tradition of winter fandom celebration!

This is mainly for fluff and gen fics, fanart, moodboards, gifs, etc. from the novels, 2017, 1998, The Worst Witch Live, or any of the other media - whichever you please! AUs, ignoring canon, etc. fully embraced too.

Write about the girls playing in the snow and decorating the castle, your OTPs snuggling by the fire, exciting holidays away from Cackle’s, or wherever the inspiration takes you!

Which ships are allowed?

All ships between consenting adults in any The Worst Witch media are welcome. Ageing up the children doesn’t count. Students can definitely be present, but not be a part of any ship.

How many prompts can I do?

Each week has a number of prompts for you to pick from. You can choose one, some, or even all(!!) of them if you like. You’re welcome to post as many fics/works as you like per week, of any length. There are enough prompts for you to do one for each day of December, but I’m by no means suggesting that you do this, as it’s a busy time for us all!

Can I post prompts from other weeks?

You don’t have to stick to just one week’s prompts if you think there’s a different combination that would be better for you. They are grouped purely to reduce the pressure to fulfil them all and also to give you some guidance if you’re indecisive about picking a prompt.

Interpret the prompts however you wish - you can take each one literally or symbolically.

An enormous thanks to @cassiopeiasara for letting me use her prompt list!

Message me if you have any further questions!

Spread the wintry love!

Please tag your contributions #twwww2019 and post to AO3 here: x
