Silmarillion Daily

A few of you might remember that a while ago, I mentioned how cool it would be to compress the timeline of the First Age into a year-long newsletter, as a fresh way to experience The Silmarillion at the same pace as the events happen in the story. Well, @maitarussa and @warrioreowynofrohan offered to help me with that, and we're finally ready to let you guys sign up for it!

Once you sign up, you will get a welcome email that will tell you all you need to know, but here are some highlights:

  • We'll start on September 15, 2022. A month from now, and also the anniversary of the publication of The Silmarillion
  • Because we had to decide on arbitrary dates, we did some math and chose to cover everything from the birth of Fëanor to the end of the First Age - the idea is to track the tale of the Silmarils, although we won't neglect other aspects: if Tolkien has provided a date, we'll include it in the newsletter.
  • If you like the book club aspect of Dracula Daily, you'll like this: every week, you'll get relevant reading suggestions that will cover the entirety of the Quenta, paragraph by paragraph. For the three Great Tales (the Leithian, the Narn, and Gondolin), optional daily reading suggestions will also be provided
  • If, however, you're short on time, don't worry - each email should take less than five minutes to read
  • Hopefully enough people will sign up that we can make this a sort of tumblr bookclub and have really fun weeks where everybody gets together to cry over a specific event! It you enjoy experiencing First Age emotions, please join us!

Too much praying directly to the Valar and not enough praying to their Maiar for their intercession

Imagine praying to Mairon for intercession lmao, only a Numenorean would do that

Look, look, look, Mairon is the patron Maia of Logistics and Domestic Organisation. You need to plan a long an complex trip from A to B, or somehow feed your ridiculously large extended family? And Melkor is who you worship? Good luck going straight to him! Mairon, on the other hand, he gets it, he understands. He'll make sure that message gets through. Especially because you just know that anytime Mairon goes to Melkor with The Practicalities TM Melkor's eyes just glaze over and he just auto-clicks 'approve' on any of his suggestions because if Mairon is saying it, the plan must be sound. Whatever it is.

Yes.

As a related aside, what is the Union of Maedhros if not Maedhros looking every people of Beleriand in the face and saying "We can go out to play dare Morgoth but only if everybody behaves, or we're going home. Fingon and I are in charge and if I hear any of you arguing with each other I'm turning this war around, are we clear?"

what was the Union of Maedhros if not an echo of teenage Maedhros putting his hands on his hips, looking around at his assorted younger brothers and cousins in a playroom half-destroyed by a “friendly” pillow fight, and saying, “Now we’re all going to clean this up, together, and then we’re all going to play a new game, which I will choose—or Grandfather will be disappointed. Okay?”

(Turgon in Gondolin, hearing about this from the eagles: Oh, shit, okay. [starts gathering his army])

I think a godtier dynamic for early stage Beleriand is like...

  • Fingolfin: In the absence of Finarfin, I will be like a father to Finrod in every way
  • Maedhros: I know what it's like to suddenly be responsible for your entire household in the absence of your parents, and Finrod is too young to have to go through that alone. I will help him as much as I can
  • Thingol: I don't particularly trust the Noldor, but my baby brother's baby's baby is my baby and I am going to take him under my wing immediately

Meanwhile Finrod is a certified adult who doesn't really need anyone's help and is honestly having a good time in Beleriand, but people do seem to enjoy looking after him, so for their sake more than his own he's happy to 🥰 at them whenever they unnecessarily baby him, so it takes like a century for any of them to realize Finrod is not their poor little meow meow and is as competent as any of them

something something huor and hurin being really close brothers and their sons not even knowing one another

it’s also the fact that their descendants have completely opposite fates from each other, too! From Húrin, we get Túrin and though it is not strictly his fault, it’s through him that Nargothrond falls and it’s because of the doom on all of them that Doriath will go through the first of its destructions (Thingol’s death and Melian leaving). Whereas from Huor, we get Tuor, and from him, Eärendil, who was prophesied and crucial to the conflict in the first age ending.

“There was great love between the brothers, and they were seldom apart in their youth.” (34, The Children of Húrin).

“Thus only for a moment, and never again, did the paths of those kinsmen, Túrin and Tuor, draw together.” (179-180, The Fall of Gondolin)
