what this post has shown me is that so many of people on this hellsite cannot distinguish between a poor little meow meow and a blorbo from my shows smh

So I went to an art exhibit recently, a collection of Native American art from pre-colonial times to the present. As you might guess, there were a few pieces whose artist was lost to time or erased. But instead of the usual “artist unknown” credit, the curators instead chose to label the artists as “Name Once Known”.

I think that’s amazing. It says, “we don’t know your name any longer; we’ll never know who you were, exactly. But you were a person once, and you mattered. You had a name, and you were loved, you had a life, and you made this art. And that means something. Your name was once known.”

unpopular opinion but

i think it’s not just allowed but actually a good thing to (want to) explore trauma and generally fucked up shit in fiction

even if it’s not your own, personal trauma

like

it’s good to try to understand things that happened/keep happening to other ppl

or things that might not (have) happen(ed) to you, personally, but are something that a group you belong to is statistically more likely to experience

it’s okay to want to know why there are people who do bad things

how they justify these things to themselves

what makes them keep doing them even when/if they realize what they’re doing is horrible

what having done these things does to them afterwards

I’d also like to point out that it limits the content you can find if rules like “you can only write about what you’ve experienced yourself” were actually a thing people followed. Historical fiction wouldn’t be a thing, sci-fi and fantasy would be dead, etc. Not to even go into a large part of being a writer (at least a good one) is being able to depict things in a convincing way despite not having experienced it yourself. It’s such a ridiculous concept to me in so many ways. No one just wants content creators to just constantly write their autobiography over and over and over again.
