On this day, 9 March 2020, tens of thousands of women across Mexico went on strike in protest at gender-based violence which kills thousands of women each year in the country. Transport, banking, education and retail were amongst the industries affected by women either staying at home or taking to the streets, under the slogan “Un Día Sin Nosotras” (“A Day without Us”). One worker, Isaura Miranda, a biologist, told the New York Times why she took part: “I just realised I had to do something… I can’t carry on with this feeling of rage and impotence over so many deaths that are cruel, without dignity… Also, I don’t want my daughter to go out one day and never come back again.“ Support for the action was so widespread that many large corporations and government departments were pressured into agreeing not to discipline women who took part in the action. Mexico’s left-wing president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, blamed "past neoliberal policies” for endemic violence against women, 10 of whom are murdered each day, and accused right-wing opponents of helping organise the strike. Today is one week post op! I had my follow up appointment with the nurses who removed the drains and nipple bolsters. Everything went well, but my skin is sensitive so I have to be extra gentle with my recovery. The first few images are from before I hopped in the shower (first one since surgery!). Gauze is taped over my nipples there to keep them from getting too wet in the shower. Last image is after the shower of course, I took the gauze off to let everything dry before applying fresh xeroform and non stick gauze. The drain sites and bolster stitching sites are very sensitive and the shower seems so have made them more so. It was painful and difficult to keep the water off my nipples, so I’ll need to become more adept. After the gauze was applied, I put on a compressive elastic bandage and a compressive vest on top of that. I may have pushed myself a bit too much today with 5 miles of walking; it felt so good getting the drains out, I couldn’t help myself! As for the results, so far I’m super pleased, very happy with my chest and with the team at Penn Medicine. #MyTransition #FtMTransition #Transmasc #TopSurgery #TopSurgeryPostOp https://www.instagram.com/p/ClU-7b9jKT7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
