This tickles me a bit, because thinking about it, we have kinda done some mascot horror in Protocol, but whereas chuck-e-cheese is the archetypical American version, we've drawn horror out of a 90s British mascot. And I'm pretty confident which of the two is more fucked up.

Five Nights at Freddie's does interest, though - I grew up when there was quite a rich array of horror stories aimed at kids: Goosebumps, Are You Afraid of the Dark, the Point Horror books. Now it seems like a lot of that stuff have been supplanted by franchises like Five Nights at Freddie's, which is aimed at kids but marketed as though it's not, and does a lot to try and launder its intended audience. It's interesting to me, though I don't feel like I have a well-developed thesis about it.

So how much?? I have abt 5 bucks maybe???

Ten grand and I put it in a script. For another ten grand I will give light pushback when Alex edits it out. I will require these amounts in sterling silver bullion left at a dead drop on the Isle of Wight. Once you have it ready, wait by your second nearest payphone and my agent will make contact.

when i was a kid i used to respond to the "glass half full/half empty" question by asking how the liquid in the glass got there in the first place. nobody ever gave me a chance to explain my reasoning so i'm doing it now

if you have a glass and it has some liquid in it, up to the halfway line, whether it is empty or full depends on what happened before the question was asked. if you started with a full glass and poured half out until only half remained, the glass is half empty, because if you continued pouring it would be fully empty. however, if you started with an empty glass and poured liquid from another container into the glass up to the halfway line, the glass is half full because if you continued pouring it would be all the way full. logical, no?

i was 13 years old when somebody finally told me it was supposed to be some kind of optimism/pessimism thing. i always thought it was a riddle that nobody let me solve

nothing has been more important to my being queer than when i went to my first pride parade, got seperated from my group, had a panic attack about it and was sitting on the side of the road holding a tiny genderfluid flag and freaking out. then this six foot five drag queen in four inch heels appeared from literally nowhere and sat down next to me. i, this scared-shitless trans bi kid at pride for the first time, very nervously told her she looked pretty and i told her my name and that i got lost and didn't feel like i should be at pride and she held my hand and said "oh, honey, everybody deserves to be here, especially you. pride is for everybody who's ever gotten lost, who's been scared of who they are or where they are. you think we never been scared before? pride's for you, honey, because you're scared. you don't have to be proud right now, but you're gonna be one day, honey, i'm sure of it."

i found my group soon after that and i never saw that queen again but to this day i am convinced i met an angel.

so yeah. pride is for you. pride is for all of us.

when I was 14 I worked in a grocery store and one day I got to bag Stephen King’s groceries and of course, being the little horror fiction nerd I am I was completely starstruck

I think he thought I was gonna ask for an autograph because I was not even lowkey staring I was full on moon-faced and bouncing and he kept looking over at me hesitantly like aw jeez kid fuck off

anyways I finally managed to squeak out that I was a huge fan and asked for advice on writing, “how do I write as well as you do?” in my horrible thick German accent and broken ass English and he gave me the best writing advice I have ever received

“shit kid, stop worrying about how other people do it and just write your story”

14 years later my wife and I nearly hit him with our car because he was jaywalking

However you think this story will end is wrong

How to draw Black characters. Because it's way too obvious when you drew a white person and gave them Black skin.

If you're an artist please listen to her. PLEASE. 🙏🏾 I cannot stress these tips enough.

If someone is able, can I get more elaboration on different hairstyles depending on lifestyle? What does lifestyle mean specifically, and in what way do hairstyles vary?

Thank you!

Reblogging in case any of our followers have answers

@rigatoniiiiiiii @metalheadsforblacklivesmatter Okay, so a couple examples i can give:

You know how white people with straight hair can jump in the pool, get out, and it's good as it dries? Yeah we can't do that. If my 4c hair is flatironed (and i go in without a cap) it's going to need to be redone afterwards or it'll curl up (if I'm natural) or tangle (if I'm not). So if your Black character is constantly swimming or in an aquatic environment (or sweating, high humidity, high activity in general really), a protective style like braids, locs, or a natural fro will work better for consistency.

(unless your character is very particular about having straight hair, in which case maybe they do sit and flatiron their hair after every event! if they have or make time, this is not unusual! Just make it known that they do! Bc it's a commitment!)

From that point- It's also taking into consideration that so many our hairstyles take TIME. So if your Black character is constantly on the move from the apocalypse, they would likely have a protective style or even a haircut to decrease the amount of time they have to put into care of their hair.

Just bc i have locs and I'm pushing this agenda: LOCS ARE NOT EFFORTLESS!! locs are low maintenance while having them, but HIGH maintenance when getting them done. So if your character has locs, do not just assume "oh well they never touch them and yet they're so neat" (that's not true) or "oh well they can wash them every morning and go" (it would take FOREVER to dry and will cause mold if i don't dry them properly).

Again, the lifestyle of your character will affect how often they do their hair. Your loc'd character in a zombie apocalypse is not going to have really neat parts in their locs. On the opposite end, if your character just got their braids and locs done, you will see the neat parts on their scalp. So if you're drawing a fresh look, show parts!!

We take pride in our hair and what we can do with it!!!! It means a lot!! so I would suggest researching a LOT on Google, constantly following and supporting Black artists, and talking to your Black peers. We're not a monolith; I've got friends who'll die before they go without a wig and I've got other friends who've never even seen a product. It depends on what type of person your character is and how much effort they're trying to put in.

This might have been a ramble bc I'm no artist and i was trying to make it make sense. Anyway, please start drawing us with more care bc I'm trying to see more of us done right 🫴🏾💕

This isn’t really about lifestyle bc it’s hard to think of examples, but I want to add a few things to what the person above said in case it’s helpful

Since they mentioned going in water, it kinda does the opposite with your natural hair. We have something called shrinkage, where your hair looks way shorter than it actually is, so if you were to dunk yourself underwater and come back up, it would look way longer. Using myself as an example, i had hair that didn’t even reach my chin that could stretch to the middle of my back. (You can also stretch strands out dry with your fingers, but that’s not permanent or a thing to include in writing/art really. also I feel like we’ve all seen a few tiktoks where a Black person dunks their head into a pool and it looks longer, so imagine that)

Our protective styles do take time, but they also last for a long time. Locs are permanent (but they look bad without retwists/maintainance as stated above), box braids can last a month or a little longer with good care, and 100% natural twists/braids last a few weeks. It is absolutely not realistic for a character to have one of these styles for only a day or two if you’re writing them, especially if they live in the modern day when that shit costs $100+. There’s no way. (yes there are exceptions, but if you don’t know what they are I’d suggest you just don’t try)
