Studies… When I look at the artworks of the people I admire, I’m often blown away by their decision making, the mastery of skills, like composition, understanding anatomy, the effortlessness with which they seem to put down their marks. This can be both inspiriong and overwhelming. For me the best way to respond when I feel like this is to study. To take on a humble approach, knowing there’s so much I don’t know, or can’t do. Studying is a way to turn myself into a student again, eager to learn, open to making mistakes. And beyond that, it takes me to being a child again, playing out of curiosity. I realise the thing that separates me from any other artist is not just skill. I can study as much as I can, but these other artists also have different minds, personalities, preferences and abilities. I will never become what they are. That to me is a reason to be inspired by them, and celebrate how we’re all different. Here are some of the artists that keep blowing me away time and again. @nicolasuribeb @glenkeaneprd @thomasfluharty @viktor_kalvachev @francisvallejoart @man_arenas @claire.wendling @nathanfowkesart @loisvb @victoria_semykina @graceinasamosir #figuredrawing #lifedrawings #studies #sketchbook #pencil #learning #artistsoninstagram #woutertulp https://www.instagram.com/p/CpAbTMysv2F/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Guitarist, gouache. I used satin watercolor paper. What’s nice about this is you can lift up the paint from the paper after it’s applied. That is super nice for making smooth transitions. I like the look of old photos and these effects inspired choices in value and texture. #gouache #watercolor #guitarist #painting #sketchbook #woutertulp #artistsoninstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CoHcqtgs1a6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Join me on January 3rd -10AM PT- on Discord for a free study session. In this session I’ll demonstrate my process of exaggeration by doing one of the assignments from my schoolism course: ‘expressive characters’. This study session is free of charge and open to all. See you there! #discord @lightboxexpo @schoolismlive #schoolism #expressivecharacters #freedrawingsession #woutertulp https://www.instagram.com/p/CmyerYnsfJj/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

There’s a lot to be said about AI. Even if artists would be compensated for art used to train AI machines, I still have my doubts. One does not live life just to reach death. A life needs to be lived. Similarly the creation of a work of art is a journey, that would become pointless if clicking a button gives you an end result that is completely separate from any feeling, skill or experience from a creator. That being said, since AI is here now, let’s at least make it fair for artists. @loisvb worded things very clearly and let me quote her post: I wholeheartedly support the ongoing protest against AI art. Why? Because my artwork is included in the datasets used to train these image generators without my consent. I get zero compensation for the use of my art, even though these image generators cost money to use, and are a commercial product. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Musicians are not being treated the same way. Stability has a music generator that only uses royalty free music in their dataset. Their words: “Because diffusion models are prone to memorization and overfitting, releasing a model trained on copyrighted data could potentially result in legal issues.” Why is the work of visual artists being treated differently? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Many have compared image generators to human artists seeking out inspiration. Those two are not the same. My art is literally being fed into these generators through the datasets, and spat back out of a program that has no inherent sense of what is respectful to artists. As long as my art is literally integrated into the system used to create the images, it is commercial use of my art without my consent. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Until there is an ethically sourced database that compensates artists for the use of their images, I am against AI art. I also think platforms should do everything they can to prevent scraping of their content for these databases. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Artists, speak out against this predatory practice! Our art should not be exploited without our consent, and we deserve to be compensated when our art is exploited for commercial use. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #createdontscrape #notoai #notoaiart #notoaigeneratedimages #noaiart https://www.instagram.com/p/CmOrjqPso3i/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
