Hey everybody!

I just wanted to share the announcement that was made at the end of Volume 29 (which came out Tuesday, July 25th). 

I’m not going to translate word for word, but the gist of it is that Kimi ni Todoke will end with Volume 30. The next chapter (Chapter 120) will be released in the September issue of Bessatsu Margaret (August 12), and then the countdown to the end begins! The announcement also gives us an idea of what to expect going forward (super vague of course, haha): 

“With the end of the graduation ceremony, there are three people who still await the results of their university entrance exams: Sawako, Kurumi, and Kazehaya. Each of them approaches the moment of fate. And then, Ayane and Ryu have decided to leave their hometown. On the other hand, Chizu will remain in their hometown. The time for departure is increasingly imminent…Sawako and her friends go steadily forward to the future - don’t miss it!” 

This announcement also claims that the September issue of Bessatsu Margaret will include a “special present” (probably Kimi ni Todoke-related). 

I think that Shiina will do about 4 more chapters (maybe 3, maybe 5), so if there are no more hiatuses the series will probably end in November or December of this year. :(

There isn’t a new chapter this month (get well soon Shiina-sensei!!❤️), but the August issue of Betsuma did include the cover of the next volume…

“The school I attended 55 years ago when I was in 2nd grade is near here. During that time, there was a city art competition in Seoul, and I remember coming here with my older brother. Now I’m sitting here after retiring from a job after 37 years of working. I sat in this exact spot 55 years ago and drew Seokjojeon Hall*. But I wasn’t great at drawing, so I remember my brother helping me. It’s the first I’ve come here in a really long time.” “I suppose you have a lot of happy memories from that time?” “Truthfully, that hasn’t been the case. My father was a civil servant, and he suddenly passed away when I was in 1st grade. I was still in shock from his death when I came here to draw with my brother. My mother went through a lot of suffering, too. Back then things like pension plans didn’t exist, so around my second semester of 4th grade, we left for the countryside where we owned some land in my father’s hometown of Paju. I’m the youngest of two sons and two daughters. I was the only one to live with my mother, and my siblings went to live with my uncle. My family was broken apart. As I got to thinking about all of that, I couldn’t help but think about the road that has led me here over the past 55 years. So I’ve been reminiscing as I sit around here waiting for my wife. The last 55 years have been so dynamic that it’s hard to express them in words. After everything passes, the memories translate into beautiful recollections. I had no way to carve my path other than through studying, and one thing led to another, and I started working for a good company. I became a part of the executive board, and the company even sent me to England to get a doctorate degree. In a way, I just lived diligently without looking around much.” “Did you face any challenges at your job?” “Work was competitive, but I could understand it well enough, so I was treated well compared to some colleagues. I was the head of overseas operations for 8 years, and when I returned to Korea I worked for a bit and left last year.” “How do you spend your time now that you’re retired?”

“There’s a get-together for people who’ve retired, but instead of talking about easygoing, comfortable stories, we just talk about our times at work. We’ve worked our lives away, with our companies consuming our every thought, so now it seems like this is the side effect. It’s like soldiers who don’t feel that the war has really ended… working was our war.” *Seokjojeon Hall is a Neoclassical building in Deoksugung Palace, completed in 1910.

“55년 전에 제가 초등학교 2학년 때 다니던 학교가 여기 근처에 있었어요. 그때 서울시 미술대회가 열렸는데, 형님하고 같이 여기 왔던 기억이 나네요. 회사를 37년을 다니다가 그만두고, 이제 여기 앉아 있어요. 55년 전 그 때 바로 이 의자에 앉아서 석조전을 그렸었는데, 제가 잘 못 그려가지고 형님이 저를 도와주고 했던 기억이 나네요. 아주 오랜만에 왔어요.” “그때 행복한 기억이 많으셨겠네요?” “사실 꼭 그렇지만은 않아요. 아버지가 공무원이셨는데, 저 초등학교 1학년 때 갑자기 돌아가신 거예요. 아버님 돌아가시고 나서 아직 충격에 휩쓸려 있던 때에 여기서 형님하고 그림을 그렸으니까요. 어머님도 마음 고생을 많이 하셨어요. 당시 연금이나 그런게 없었고, 저 한 4학년 2학기 때에 아버지 고향인 경기도 파주에 땅이 조금 있어서 낙향을 했죠. 2남2녀 중에 막내인 저하고 어머니만 같이 살았고, 형제들은 외삼촌하고 살게 됐어요. 제 가족이 해체가 된 거죠. 그렇게 생각하다보니 55년이 지난 지금까지 제가 살아왔던 날들을 생각 안 할 수가 없었어요. 그래서 이 자리에서 집사람을 기다리면서 계속 회상하고 있었어요. 55년이란 시간이 말로 표현할 수 없을 정도로 참 다양했던 것 같아요. 지나고 보면 다 아름다운 추억이죠. 공부 밖엔 길이 없었고, 어떻게 하다 보니 좋은 회사에 취직했어요. 임원까지 했고, 회사에서 박사 유학가라고 절 영국으로 보내주기도 했고요. 어찌보면 세상 모르고 열심히만 살았죠.” “회사생활 하시면서 고비는 없으셨어요?” “경쟁적인 곳이었지만 충분히 이해할 수가 있었고, 전 회사에서 좋은 대우를 받은 편이었어요. 해외에 법인장으로 8년 나가있었고, 다시 한국에 돌아와서 근무하다가 나이가 들어 작년에 그만두었죠.” “은퇴하시고는 어떻게 지내시나요?” “은퇴한 사람들의 모임이 있는데, 편한 이야기들을 못하고 회사 이야기를 하고 있고 그래요. 회사만을 위해, 회사만을 생각하고 살았으니까 휴유증이 남은 것 같아요. 전쟁이 끝났는데도 실감을 못하는 군인들처럼… 참 전쟁처럼 일했죠.”

Kimi ni Todoke Chapter 119 Translation (w/ Images)

Hey!

I wanted to share Chapter 119 and provide a translation for those who are curious about the latest developments in Kimi ni Todoke. Under each image I’ve written what’s being said on that page - hopefully it’s easy to follow. 

I’d like to apologize in advance for two things. First is the terrible picture quality. They’re not actual scans, just pictures taken with a cell phone, and to make matters worse, you’ve got my colorful blanket as the background…lol. So I’m sorry for the lackluster presentation, but hopefully this tides you over until we get scans / the actual volume is released. Second, if you’ve read my translations before, you’ll know I’m not fluent in Japanese (or pretending to be) - I took a few courses at my university but am largely self-taught. I’d like to think I’m getting a little better, but these are not anywhere near professional translator quality. There are probably several mistakes. I’ve tried to make the dialogue sound natural, but I’m limited by my own level of comprehension. If you don’t understand / read Japanese and want to know what’s happening, I hope this at least gives you the gist of what’s going on - basically, I’m giving you what I gleaned from the chapter (right or wrong)! I’ve also included a few “notes” on certain pages where I thought some explanation might be beneficial. Thank you for your patience! :) 

This chapter should be the last one in Volume 29, which will be released on July 25th. Kimi ni Todoke is currently on a one month hiatus, so we won’t see Chapter 120 until July (August Issue). There is an author’s note in this chapter that I didn’t translate, but in it Shiina-sensei says there’s still a bit of the story left. I’m guessing we’ll get about 4 more chapters (maybe 5) so that the series ends with 30 volumes. 

Finally, if you enjoy Kimi ni Todoke, I would strongly encourage you to purchase Bessatsu Margaret, if you’re able to. I started buying them this year (to collect the final chapters of Kimi ni Todoke), and they’re amazing (and massive!!). So much fun, and the images are bigger than what’s published in the manga volumes so you can see finer details! 

Well, now that I’ve scared you away from actually reading this thing, put on your best clothes and grab a box of tissues, because you’re going to Kitahoro High School’s graduation ceremony!

Once again, I’m not fluent, nor am I pretending my knowledge of Japanese is extensive. There will definitely be mistakes in here, and there were a few lines I just couldn’t wrap my brain around. Some of the translations are fairly liberal, others are kind of stilted. That said, if you want to get a feel for what’s being said on each page, I hope this will help!

It’s pretty long, so if you would rather read something more concise, @lalasma did an awesome translation of the Chapter 117 summary!

The format goes something like this:

“Got the morbs” should be a thing.

Victorian slang is AMAZING, and select phrases really need to make a comeback.

“Bitch the pot” - Pour the tea (HOW RELEVANT IS THIS!?)

“Bang up the elephant” - Absolutely perfect; super stylish

“Well, that’s shot the bale” - Something that has missed the mark entirely

“Church-bell” - A woman prone to gossip

“Chuckaboo” - A dear friend, a bosom chum

“Beer and skittles” - A great time (see also: Irish Gaelic “craic”)

“Butter on bacon” - Something overdone or too extravagant

“Cupid’s kettle drums” - Breasts, particularly large ones

“Gigglemug” - A cheerful smiling face

Are you trying to tell me that japanese has different numbers for different things?

Not entirely different. It’s still the number plus a suffix, but phonotactical laws cause people to say, for instance, “ippon” instead of “ichi-hon.” Makes sense if you have a feel for the phonotactics.

The generic counter and numbering for days of the month is a relic of classical Japanese though and therefore different, though of course they follow the same phonotactical laws.

But yeah, it’s like how in English we say “a drop of water” or “a sheet of paper,” except that in Japanese you say it for everything. Like, “Two sheets of ticket for the 9:00 showing of Seven people of Samurai please.”

@breast-centric-hostiliies we also have this to a certain extent in English, for example:

Counters can be frustrating, but Japanese has these advantages when compared with English:

- no future tense

- no plural s

- no change in the ‘be’ verb (am, is, are) - there are only 2 irregular verbs (来る and する), in English over half of verbs are ‘irregular’, meaning their past tense and participle conjugations can be very difficult to learn (buy, bought, [was] bought)

- Japanese kana have only one possible pronunciation, there are less sounds in Japanese -you don’t need to define definite and indefinite articles in Japanese (a/an, the) -No countable and uncountable (or both!) nouns- you can’t have one toast, but you can have one slice of toast or piece of toast, however you can have one pizza, but also a slice of pizza. Consider how you can’t order one beef, but you can ask for one chicken and be grammatically correct, or whether you order a fish or some fish from the menu? All have differences in nuance and some are just flat-out incorrect. English is an absolute mess when it comes to countable and uncountable nouns. They are horrible to learn and have almost no rules, some things have 2 words that mean the same object but one is countable (noodles) and one is uncountable (ramen). All in all Japanese is, in terms of speaking at least, quite easy to pick up compared to English, so try not to let counters frustrate you, they actually often help to clarify things once you’ve got them memorised.
