Hhhuugh so the reddit incident came and went but I know there's going to be a handful of twitter users that don't know jackshit about tumblr and are migrating here. Honestly it's valid that you all jumped ship because there's only going to be two outcomes to this:

-Muskratatouille is going to realise he fucked up and remove the rate limit.

- He refuses to admit his mistake and kills twitter.

So welcome! I hope you like my blog. Here's a revamp of some things you need to know before interacting with me and some general notes you need to know:

  • Massive porn bot problem here that can actually harass you and other users by sending porn through dm's and asks. Also shares malicious links to sites which is a big no-no. Therefore, PUT A DAMN PFP AND CUSTOMIZE YOUR BLOG, AND REBLOG POSTS. That's the only way to let people know that you're not a bot and that you're 100% a living breathing human. Lurking only works through reblogging without adding tags. (Side note: irl Hot lady pfps are not that great. Bots use them all the time. Anime hot lady is fine.)
  • Likes do jackshit. Tumblr is more of a blogging website than a social media platform. The way it circulates and brings attention to posts is by a sharing system called reblogging. If you really want to support artists, writers, game devs or just wanting your friends to see some funny posts, reblog it. (Reblogging artists work is not the same as reposting on this site. It helps us.)
  • Tags are your friends in this site. You can use them to navigate through content of your favorite subjects or you can add your thoughts to them. They can also help sort out your own original posts on your blog. (for example I use 'I ramble' on posts that have nothing to do with my fandoms.)
  • If you censor a word I will personally break your computer. You can say whatever the hell you want on this website and you won't get in trouble (unless it's hate speech, which you can report.)
  • Pt 2 of the above point: The reason why I'm so adamant on this point is because tumblr has a filter system. Users use this system to filter out content and tags that they don't want to see. This helps a lot for people with triggers and over all curating your online experience. By censoring words, you are bypassing these filters and doing more harm then good. Don't censor your words. If you want to use this feature go to settings and click on "content you see".
  • Pt 3. With that said, please please tag your posts if they have triggers or upsetting material. Whether you do dark content or not, it is important to tag your posts if they have a well known trigger.
  • There is no algorithm. You create it using tags. Your post going viral is a 50/50 gamble and you better hope it's a post that's actually great.
  • You can block anonymous askers since you need to use an account to send asks. Have fun.
  • Blocking users is much more effective. You can't see or interact with their posts and vice versa. Go wild.

CSP Painting Brush Sets!

A series of brush sets that are really good for painting. A lot of these are very bulky so I recommend trying all the brushes in a set and choosing which ones are best for you.

Image

This set is so good I can't stress enough. It has like 30 brushes though so like make sure your computer can handle this. A lot of good ones for hatching and crunchy (can't think of a better word) brushes.

Image

I don't remember what I downloaded this set for. It has come in handy for more soft-looking stuff so I recommend it.

Image

The texture of this looks cool, haven't downloaded it yet though.

A lot of cool texture brushes.

Like 13 cool textured paintbrushes.

What with bucket hats, bare midriffs, and flared jeans having been resurrected by some irresponsible necromancer with frosted tips, I figure there’s no better time to resurrect some of my favorite Y2K fonts. I typically only see the same three or four pop up in discussions on the subject, so maybe this will be helpful to nostalgic designers. Click though for links.

Golly! That post sure was popular. I’m happy to share some more.

Astro (2004, T26, Commercial) Crystopia (2000, BrainReactor, Commercial) Crystopian (1998, About Type Foundry, Commercial) LVDC Fool 22 (2003, Lovedesign Co., Freeware) Frigate (2001, Apostrophic Lab, Freeware) Neutronica (2000, BrainReactor, Commercial) Pornomania (2000, BrainReactor, Commercial) Proton (1995, T26, Commercial) Rephlex (1998, Lineto, Commercial) Solar2000 (1998, Cyclone Graphix, Unknown)

How does this have so many notes?

LVDC Cobra 4 (2000, Lovedesign Co., Freeware) Contour (1992, Device, Commercial) FUTU (2002, Fenotype, Freeware) Intergalactic (2000, BrainReactor, Commercial) Omicron (1997, Beyond Design, Freeware) Photonica (2002, Liew Keng Huat, Freeware) SF Quartzite (1999, ShyFoundry, Freeware) Republika (2000, Apostrophic Lab, Freeware) Unite (1997, Image Club, Commercial) Warzone (1999, Glitch, Freeware) Yagiza (2001, B-Rain, Freeware)

Honorable mention to Yeoman Jack, an excellent free modern face by Iconian that looks more like it’s from the early 2000s than many of their actually 20 year old fonts. I tried to stick to fonts that I was pretty sure were not based on an existing typeface. I only left out Typodermic because Ray Larabie’s work is already so popular and well known, but Neuropol is obviously a classic. Check out his stuff if you’re not familiar.

my advice for writing dialogue:

  • be brave
  • if you can’t say it in one breath out loud, you should probably add some punctuation
  • for casual dialogue: can you imagine two people saying this at a local coffee shop?
  • people talk over each other and cut each other off in real life all the time. your characters should too
  • modern, conversational dialogue isn’t one person lobbing one fully formed, multiple-sentence thought at another person, and then waiting to receive one back
  • dialogue is filled with placeholder sounds — ehs, ums, uhs — and these differ by region, language, and culture
  • people ask for clarification and sometimes things are just, by nature, unclear. sometimes you have to let the characters figure out the disconnect even if you, the author, know what it is already
  • find clips and videos online of the people/region and listen to them! how do they talk? is it fast, or drawling? how can you convey this to a reader who may have never heard them?

My bit on this is the fact that dialogue being written is vastly different from how it occurs.

A writer is essentially writing a filtered version of a conversation because the characters need to know something is happening, and have intent in speaking, while actual living beings are confused train wrecks unless scripted. You need the story to move because it is on a timeline and if you are stuck writing it all out its less a story and more a record of interaction.

You are trying to be plot relevant while character relevant.

A good example of this is two friends just being absolutely dumbasses.

Is it relevant to the plot? Maybe not. But it does show that these characters are close- and in the face of boredom, adversity, or whatever type of situation they are in- they can handle themselves together. So their friendship is the relevant point for this.

While making your dialogue sound realistic is great and gives reference and individualizes the characters- it should be done with relevance to the character or plot.

A stutter that helps mispronounce a word and causes a misunderstanding? Plot point.

Constant pauses that prolong a conversation until the reader and characters forget why we are there? Not good.

Yeah it’s always good to remember that you are writing to show something and not necessarily aiming for complete realism, that’s another important point.

It’s like how, to use an example, the Beka Cooper series uses first person journal entries as a framing device (with the explanation that it’s so detailed due to the viewpoint character having reasons to write down everything as they do). It reads more like a first person action story because that’s the style of the storytelling, and doesn’t read a lot like a realistic journal but it’s fine because that actively services the story and makes it readable. The writing is there to tell you something - it doesn’t and shouldn’t always advance the plot, but it should advance understanding in some way for something or to convey some feeling or atmosphere, etc.

why write a story if no one's going to read it?

Sometimes you don't want to share a story with others. Sometimes you do want to share it, but no one clicks on the title. So why bother writing it down if the only person you can guarantee will read it is you?

  1. You need to get it out of your head. It just keeps replaying in your imagination on a loop and the only way to get it unstuck is to pin it down on paper.
  2. You need to figure out what the story is. You have a lot of disjointed scenes or lines that you know are connected but you can't quite figure out how.
  3. There's something in the story that's important to you, and you don't want to lose that thing by forgetting it. Future you might find that thing important too.
  4. You want to be able to go back to the story again and again. Maybe to make adjustments over time. Maybe just to revisit a story that gives you the emotional release you need in that moment.
  5. You want to be able to use text-to-speech to read the story aloud to you. Maybe it's a bedtime story. Maybe it's keeping you company while you do errands and chores.
  6. You want to find out whether you can write a story (because not everyone can).
  7. You want to be able to have almost the same story, but a little bit different, and you want to have it 15 times with slight variations. Then you can go through your own personal menu picking exactly the combination of beats that will satisfy you most on this reading.
  8. You enjoy the process of finding just the right words or phrases or scenes to paint the pictures you want to shape the scene.
  9. You want to find the exact rhythm and syllables and structure to make a sentence really sing.
  10. You don't really have any particular reason, but you know you want to write that story down.

actually,,, the process IS beautiful isn’t it.  I mean we all look forward to finishing things and sharing them as well, but when a project is completely done don’t you miss the joy of working on it?  now that it’s become a stagnant thing you can look back on, often with a brutally critical eye, and not a living entity you loved and shaped and refined.  weird how that happens.  love the process; it’s not just The Bit You Rush Through to get to the good part.  remember that love when you look back at the product.  goes for things other than art too

wondering if maybe obsession with The Product (the product is not bad, sharing it is not bad) is part of the reason why I’ve always struggled to form habits…??  like, the idea in my head has always been “if I work hard at some point I will be done and get a reward” which is not,,, how it works with a lot of really useful habits, so I think the 2023 experiment will be,,, treating the process as the reward rather than clawing for excellence and wearing myself out
