Those that have married in to Royal Families since 1800.

UK Edition

Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark

  • Prince Philip was born on the island of Corfu as the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg a member of the British Royal Family
  • His ancestry is not Greek by blood, but English, Russian, German/Prussian and Danish.
  • Philip first met the Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, at the wedding of Princess Marina of Greece and the Duke of Kent in 1934. The then Princess was only eight and was a bridesmaid of her Uncle’s wedding while Philip was there as a cousin of the Princess Marina.
  • The couple met for the second time in 1939, when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth toured the Britannica Royal Naval College in Dartmouth – at which Prince Philip was enrolled – with their two daughters, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. Elizabeth and Philip exchanged letters following this meeting, and continued to do so throughout the Second World War.
  • After returning to Britain in 1946, Prince Philip asked for George VI’s permission to marry Princess Elizabeth. The king accepted this request, yet asked that any formal engagement should be delayed until the princess’s 21st birthday the following year. Philip became a British subject in 1947 after taking his mother’s surname, Mountbatten, and renouncing his lineage to the Greek and Danish thrones.
  • When he married he had the equivalent of 12 pence in the bank, but Philip designed a bracelet as his wedding present for his bride. The stones came from a tiara owned by his mother. He only designed the Queen’s engagement ring from a tiara belonging to his Mother.
  • The Duke gave up smoking the day before his marriage.
  • His interests are painting, the environment, horses, flying and writing. He has written books on birds, the environment, carriage driving and other subjects.
  • The islanders of Tanna, one of the islands in Vanuatu in the South West Pacific, worship the Duke of Edinburgh as a god. Vanuatu was formerly the Anglo-French Condominium of the New Hebrides, which Prince Philip visited in 1971.
