ONE ~ name

cynic, though i truly am no cynic and hold no critical bone in my body. new friends, please do not be deterred.

TWO ~ birthday

jan. 11. right at the start of a new year so my forgetful self remembers.

THREE ~ zodiac sign

i'm not much into zodiacs and such, but i am a capricorn, and my dearest friend tells me i pretty much fill the bill for a typical capricorn so hopefully it's all good things.

FOUR ~ height

5'4" and i am in denial. i am taller than my younger, 5'8" sister. i have to be taller. please let me be taller.

FIVE ~ hobbies

let's see...baking, gardening, video games, watching cooking shows, monopoly (yikes), but most of all art. i love my art classes and all of my compositions are my babies.

SIX ~ favorite colors

ooo, i'm involuntarily obsessed with all shades of blue. i will literally walk into a store and buy a pair of blue shorts that look identical to the other ten blue shorts i have and not even blink an eye.

literally anything that gets my mind to stop buzzing. it usually leads to a week-long obsession over the inspiration as i replay the moment thousands of times in my head.

Jess Braidel | 37 | master mage | character in Next to Nothing

There hasn’t been anyone who takes the phrase “do it for science” more seriously than the mage Jess Braidel. Ever the optimist and always the hermit, Jess spends his days happily locked in his laboratory, dabbling in the fine arts of blood magic and inanimate enchantments while burning the books his personal library, Marceline Graves, memorizes to keep all magical knowledge safe. He’s not out to conquer the world on a grand quest, but if science calls him to take such a path, you can bet Jess is already on it.

an excerpt from Next to Nothing (310 words)

Hey you guys :) I’ve decided to post an excerpt of my current WIP, Next to Nothing, as a teaser. I hope you all enjoy!

“So,” Martin starts, taking a swig of beer as I draw circles in the condensation of my glass, “you’re obviously pissed.”

“My job. I hate it.” Martin hums pleasantly.

“Is that why you’re…weird?” he asks, gesturing to me with his beer, and my eyes float over to the old television.

“I’m always weird,” I reply as players skate around the rink, slamming into each other. “You’ve pointed it out one hundred and twenty-two times since we met.”

“Smartass. Well, here’s something I’ve never pointed out.” Martin taps his beer glass against mine. “You haven’t touched your beer.” I hum absently, blocking earlier images of Jess and his mangled, bloody leg by counting the bubbles in the beer. Before Martin picked me up from outside of Jess’ lab, I cried and shed all of every emotion I felt, and now I feel empty; it’s a strange sense of relief, but I’m unable to grasp on to anything concrete, my mind floating more than conversating.

“I don’t like drinking,” I finally say, pushing the glass towards Martin as he empties his. He gives me a questioning look despite grabbing the beer, and I put my elbow on the table, resting my cheek in my hand.

“Well, I’m technically still having a drink with you,” Martin starts, waving for the bartender, “so I’m satisfied. May I have a…an unsweet tea? Thanks.”

“You’re dieting me?” I ask drily, and as he rushes to amend himself, as if dreading that he stepped on my fragile state of mind, I let myself laugh, a rasp and an emptiness wrapped around it. “An unsweet tea is fine.” A slow smile seeps onto Martin’s face, and I snatch the beer from him impulsively, taking a burning drink with satisfaction as the blood, the bones, and the lovely job I’ve entangled myself in begins to drain from my mind.
