really love dynamics that are like 'it honestly doesn't matter if you view them as romantic or platonic, the point is that they love each other. the type of love is inconsequential, all that matters is that it's there'. gotta be one of my favorite genders.

The Boyfriend Subscription [ARC Review]

Release Date: 26th March 2024 Overall Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

My Review:

Content Warning: Off-screen sexual assault and violence

The Boyfriend Subscription by Steven Salvatore is a contemporary queer retelling of Pretty Woman (1991) that follows the love story between Cole Vivien and Teddy Hughes. Cole is the CEO of a queer sex working app called VERSTL from LA who is in New York for an event to promote his company and collaborate with a potential investor. On the other hand, Teddy is a botanist and author who had made his home in New York in the last few years until his marriage ended and his plant business went down with it.

Both men find themselves running from their pasts, they find solace in a local New York bar and cross paths. After a fun evening out, Cole propositions Teddy to be his fake boyfriend for the week to impress the investor at a business meeting and his family at a wedding.

The Catch? Cole Vivien doesn’t kiss or fall in love. Will the sparks flying between them be enough for Cole to break his lifelong rules for Teddy?

Thinking again about how Suzanne esentially subverted the "beloved famous man that is actually a horrible person in real life" with Finnick, who is the complete opposite of that.

Finnick has this whole image costructed around him by the people that abused him for years: the Capitol's darling, their golden boy, the sex symbol of Panem, the man that has countless lovers but leaves them constantly and doesn't look back etc. And you would expect, initially, to meet a man that retains at least a part of that persona in his day to day life. But Finnick doesn't, not even one bit.

You see instead a man that is deeply in love and completely devoted to the one woman he quite literally adores, a man that protects Mags, his old mentor and his mother figure, as much as he can, a man that wouldn't leave Johanna behind, a man that gathers whatever strenght he has left to speak publicly about the abuse inflicted upon him at the government's hands; the opposite of what the Capitol's media and reputation made him out to be.

Not to mention that Beetee says it’s a miracle Finnick is still with them after all the abuse he’s gone through.

Anonymous asked:

the way reading romance novels keeps getting compared to watching porn is crazy to me

My perspective is:

They are not the same thing. They do serve the same purposes for some people, and that's fine. Both can reinforce harmful ideas that people have about sex and relationships, but the reality is that those ideas exist due to larger cultural issues, and for that matter, those ideas can only be dispelled through sex ed, separation between church and state, healthier cultural attituders about sex in general, and parental figures that actually give a fuck about discussing these issues with kids.

I always get a little leery when the discussion focuses on the fact that romance novels and porn are not the same. Because while that's true, there is also nothing wrong with people watching porn, frankly. There are, undoubtedly, bigger issues with the way the porn industry treats workers than the way the romance novel industry does, simply because of the risks involved with each type of work. HOWEVER, a lot of that has to do with the way we stigmatize the work, the way we cloak sex work with shame and turn workers into pariahs. The industry won't be better, because we don't want to acknowledge it exists and we don't want to help. (And of course, there are people in the industry who enjoy their work and work healthily,.)

And at the end of the day, the same people trying to further stigmatize and ultimately ban porn are going to try to do it with romance novels eventually. So. Imo, people who read and write romance novels should be more concerned with that than with differentiating between the two, but I understand the impulse.
