Bezoar 3

We are proud to announce Bezoar 3!

Bezoar is a monster-themed mini-comics anthology, started by a small group of Athens, GA cartoonists. However, for issue 3, we’re doing something a little different…

Bezoar contributor, incredible cartoonist, and wonderful pal Patrick Dean has recently come under some pretty severe health problems, being diagnosed with ALS.

As Patrick’s friends and fellow cartoonists, the Bezoar crew decided that we wanted to help out in any way we could. We decided it was time to put together a new issue of Bezoar, extend the net of creators further to include other friends & colleagues of Patrick’s, and use whatever funds come from it for his benefit! All money from sales of Bezoar 3 will go to Patrick and his family to assist with medical bills, quality of life, and just as a way to let them know we care.

So, let’s talk about Bezoar 3!

As with the previous issues, Bezoar’s theme is MONSTERS. Creators are welcome to interpret that however they like. Check out this killer list of contributors!

Drew Weing Patrick Dean Wes Brooks Wook Jin Clark Adam Daughhetee Duane Ballenger David Mack Shawn Daughhetee Scott Stripling J Chris Campbell Rich Tommaso Joey Weiser Eleanor Davis Lee Gatlin Michele Chidester

As you can see from a few examples posted below, Bezoar 3 has a wide variety of work, ranging from spooky to delightful in mood and art style!

This anthology is 40 pages of monster greatness! Now, you have a few options for how to read Bezoar 3

Limited Edition - Screen printed color cover, only 50 available, $10. Buy Online!

***The Limited Edition is sold out! Thanks for your support!***

Regular Edition - Black & white cover, $5. Buy Online!

Digital Edition - ALL THREE Bezoar issues in one bundle! PDF versions of Bezoar 1, 2, and 3. Available as a Pay-What-You-Want Download!

The beautiful cover was created by David Mack who screen printed the Limited Editions. The logo, designed by Drew Weing, is hand-stamped and embossed on each cover, both Limited and Regular Editions!

We’re all very proud of this book, and we all hope that you’ll check it out! Be it the Limited, Regular, or Digital Edition, this is a great way to help out a member of our community and get some great monster comics!

Thank you all for the support! We’ve sold through a printing-and-a-half of the Bezoar 3 mini-comics, and all of that money has gone to Patrick and his family! We are going to be cutting off online orders of the print edition at the end of the month, so if you’ve been meaning to get those, please put your orders in by June 30, 2019. Buy it online here!

The digital edition will continue to be available. That’s a pretty great deal for 3 issues of monster goodness, and as always all of the money that comes from that still goes to Patrick and his family.

However, if you’ve been meaning to pick up a physical copy of Bezoar 3, now is the time to order! Thank you!

***Thanks to all those who bought online! The print editions are now only available for purchase in person, but the Digital Edition is still available as a pay-what-you-want download!***

HeroesCon 2019

HeroesCon is this weekend! I’ll be there in Indie Island, table AA-1116, and I’d love to see you there! The schedule was recently released, and I’ll be on one panel:

SATURDAY 11:00 AM Room 203B ALL AGES PANEL TURNS 37 (old enough to know better)
We’re in a golden age of comics for kids and teenagers. Why have all-ages comics become such a dominant force in the industry? What are the unique challenges of creating and marketing comics for different age groups? JOEY WEISER, NAOMI FRANQUIZ, TED NAIFEH, ANDY RUNTON, and JUNE BRIGMAN talk with moderator AARON KASHTAN about the past, present and future of comics for younger readers.

I’ll have my new graphic novel Ghost Hog on hand in both hardcover and softcover! I’m also bringing several copies of the Ghost Hog Free Comic Book Day issue, in case you missed it!

This would also be a great show to pick up Bezoar 3! Many contributors to the monster anthology, including Patrick Dean, will be at the show. See how many signatures you can get! As always, all money from sales of Bezoar 3 go directly to Dean and his family.

This show is also a rare opportunity to pick up the Buzzard Guts custom figure, Master Natural! Packaging art by David Mack, and colored by yours truly! This is an extremely limited item, I only have three to sell!

And, as usual with HeroesCon, I’ll be available for commissions! Have a favorite character you’d like to see (and own!) in my style? Find me in Indie Island and let me know!

I’ll also have Mermin graphic novels, SpongeBob Comics issues, and more! See you there!

I’ll be at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival this weekend! If you live in the Toronto area, definitely come by and say “Hi!” I’ll be at table 279 on the second floor. The show is free to attend!

This is the debut convention for Ghost Hog, my new graphic novel, and I’ve even got a few panel appearances lined up!

  • Saturday 10:00 AMPigs! Pigs! Pigs! It’s the Year of the Pig! – Meet the creators of two exciting new porcine releases, Howard Wong (The Unhappy Little Pig) and Joey Weiser (Ghost Hog), as they talk about how and why they made their recent books. This is one session that definitely won’t be a boar!
  • Saturday 4:00 PMThe FLIGHT Anthology Reunion Panel – A discussion of the history and impact of the award-winning FLIGHT anthology series. 12 years after its initial publication, many of the contributors have since gone on to have successful careers in graphic novels and animation. Join founder and editor Kazu Kibuishi, with contributors Bannister, Jason Caffoe, Tony Cliff, Stu Livingston, Fabio Moon, Richard Pose, Katie Shanahan, Kean Soo, Joey Weiser, and other special guests for a look back and discussion of FLIGHT’s continuing influence on comic anthologies today!

These are both going to be tons of fun! I’ve got a little presentation prepared to introduce Ghost Hog and its inspirations for the Pigs! panel, and the FLIGHT panel is going to be nuts! So many creators in one small space, reminiscing about our experiences together!

Ghost Hog in Stores NOW!

Ghost Hog is in stores now!

A new graphic novel from the Eisner Award-nominated creator of MERMIN that deftly navigates loss, vengeance, and acceptance! Truff is the ghost of a young boar, fueled by fury towards the hunter who shot her down. She has a lot to learn about her new afterlife, and thankfully the forest spirits Claude and Stanley are there to guide her! However, they soon find that her parents, along with their fellow animal villagers, have been kidnapped by the malicious mountain demon Mava! Truff wants to help, but… the hunter is finally within her grasp, and if she lets him go, she may never get her revenge! Is vengeance all that being a ghost is good for? Or is there something stronger keeping this little pig tethered to the living world?

I am so excited that this book is out there in the world now, and that people are starting to read it!

I spoke to Comicon.com about the book, if you’d like to read more thoughts from me on the book. Ghost Hog came out yesterday in bookstores, and is hitting comic shops today! In fact, Paste Magazine calls it required reading!

Weiser’s proved himself gifted at spinning out a narrative and cast of characters more complex than most folks produce for kids.

Early reviews have been great! Here is one from Kirkus, and one on The Beat!

Weiser’s graphic novel, with its lively artwork reminiscent of Sunday comic strips, renders the complex themes both entertaining and understandable. - Kirkus
The graphic novel provides an easy-to-follow plot that can open up discussions on topics many people—young and old—struggle with. It’s a book that parents and kids can enjoy together filled with life lessons, humor, and heartwarming moments. - The Beat

There are a few different previews available for you, if you’d like to sample the book. One at my website, one on Paste, and even more preview pages available on my Patreon!

Free Comic Book Day

Free Comic Book Day is tomorrow, Saturday 5/4! I’ll be signing at Richard’s Comics & Collectables in Greenville, SC from 11am-5pm!

There is a special Ghost Hog FCBD issue that I can’t wait for folks to read! It’s been getting some great reviews from places like NPR who says that you should “definitely” pick it up, and All Star Comics Melbourne!

Open, dynamic, colorful and decidedly kid-friendly art, but there's some knotty, thoughtful stuff here: themes like regret, obsession, guilt, shame and empathy. - NPR’s Glen Weldon
An unexpectedly deep little comic, Ghost Hog is heartily recommended. - All Star Comics Melbourne

The Ghost Hog FCBD issue contains two original stories, not included in the graphic novel! But you won’t have to wait long for the book... it comes out the following week! And if you’re at Richard’s Comics, you won’t even have to wait that long! I’m going to be bringing a few advanced copies of the Ghost Hog graphic novel for sale!

But no matter where you live, from the United States to Australia, go out to your local shop on Free Comic Book Day and they’ll give you free comics, including Ghost Hog!

New Patreon Launched

I just launched a new Patreon! This is a great way to support me throughout the year as I continue to work on my comics and illustration.  I’ve kept my model very simple. There are just two tiers:

  • Monthly Tip! - Give $1 per month as a way to let me know you appreciate my work!
  • Weekly Updates - For only $2 per month, you will get access to weekly looks at what I’m working on! Sketches, works-in-progress, behind-the-scenes info, etc!

It’s as easy as that! Each tier gives you the option to donate more per month if you’d like, but at $1 or $2 a month, you’ll hardly notice it, but it will make a big difference for me!

On top of it providing some relief from the financial stress that comes with being an artist, it’s going to be a great outlet for me to share my work with you!

The first weekly update is up already! If you’d like a look at how I came to create the cover to my upcoming graphic novel, Ghost Hog, head over to http://patreon.com/joeyweiser and select that $2/mo tier!

Thank you! I really appreciate any support you are able to give!

Celebrate the Year of the Boar with Ghost Hog!

2019 is the Year of the Boar, and to celebrate that and the coincidentally well-timed release of the upcoming graphic novel (and free comic book) Ghost Hog, I have created a special postcard set!

Each postcard is inspired by a month of the year, and features Truff, the main character of Ghost Hog, enjoying the season with a friend from the Zodiac!

To see all of the illustrations hop over to my portfolio site, and you can purchase the postcard set at my store!

Ghost Hog for 2019 Free Comic Book Day

PORTLAND, OR., Dec. 20, 2018 — This Free Comic Book Day (FCBD), Oni Press is excited to announce a 2019 Silver Offering from Eisner-nominated cartoonist Joey Weiser (Mermin), featuring two all-new stories about Truff, the main character in his upcoming all-ages graphic novel, Ghost Hog! Truff is the ghost of a young boar. With her friends Claude and Stanley, she helps other denizens of the forest—especially if they're spirits like her! Of course, sometimes the others don't want her help.... “I love Free Comic Book Day because it’s not only a great chance for publishers and retailers to show off what’s best on the shelves, but it’s a chance for local communities to gather around a mutual love for comics,” said Joey Weiser. “So, I was super stoked to contribute to FCBD with a pair of Ghost Hog short stories! These stories are not included in the graphic novel, and give readers a peek at the world of specters and strange creatures they’ll find in the book.” About Free Comic Book Day: Free Comic Book Day is a single day in the first week of May when participating comic book specialty shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their shops. The Ghost Hog Silver Offering is available at participating comic shops on May 4, 2019, and the full 168-page graphic novel will be available everywhere on May 7, 2019.

I’m very excited to be a part of Free Comic Book Day, because (as stated above) I totally love FCBD! And the fact that the Ghost Hog graphic novel will be hitting shelves mere days after folks can pick up the free comic is absolutely perfect!

Ghost Hog Cover and Details Announced!

The Hollywood Reporter announced Oni Press’s summer lineup, including my next graphic novel, Ghost Hog, coming in May 2019!

The ghost of a young boar has to choose between saving her surviving friends and family and finally getting vengeance on the hunter that killed her in the new graphic novel by Mermin creator Weiser. “Ghost Hog is a little darker than my previous work, by virtue of its premise, but my challenge to myself was to still make it fun and engaging all the same,” the cartoonist said. “I’m very excited to share Truff and her world with readers!” (May 7, Middle Reader)

Other outlets, such as Bleeding Cool, ran the news as well, with a little extra description of the story.

Really exciting! I worked very hard with the Oni team to create this cover, and I love how it turned out. We were also fortunate to get a nice quote from Nate Powell. What you see on the book is considerably paired down from the nice words that he sent us. Hopefully, we’ll find a spot in the final book to print the whole thing!

Keep an eye out for more Ghost Hog news in the time leading up to its publication. It’ll be May before we know it!
