Damn a lot of gen X and millennial teens sure were Guinea pigs in the horrific experiment* of all the “scared straight” and “behavioral corrections programs” and “military schools” and “therapeutic boarding schools” and “pray out the gay camps” and other fucking abusive “give us your troubled teens and we’ll fix em up” bullshit that was extremely popular in the 90s and 00s.

They’re telling all the stories now and have been for years and the depths of the horrors are mind boggling. They’re making all the docs and writing all the books and pulling back the lids on all the seedy underbellies and throwing the terror into the light so we can all stare at all the traumas that occurred and in some places are still occurring.

*btw we can say beyond all doubt none of this shit “worked” to help ANYONE of course. Except the abusers who got to get rich off of abuse. So many of the survivors will be the first to say they’re deeply fucked up by it and many haven’t survived the experience. Messed up beyond words.

Since I didn’t say it last night and I’m back to watching the latest doc series that spawned this post, I need to add

These abuse “programs” are, to my knowledge without exception, all Christian fundamentalist in nature or “bible schools.”

And they’re all like less than 2 degrees of separation from very powerful Republican politicians.

Gen Z is affected by this shit too. I (early Gen Z) spent six and a half years at a “therapeutic day school”. I feel like I’m screaming into the void when I talk about it.

God I’m so sorry and that never should have occurred to you or anyone. But just so that the intent of my post is clear, I know Gen z has survived this too and I am not implying it’s ONLY Gen X/millennial. The fact it’s still occurring is fucked and it ALL has to stop.

But Gen Z simply isn’t old enough to be called the ginuea pigs of the original experiments as I’m taking about here, from back when we didn’t know the terrible outcomes. Gen z is generation like 3.0 in these settings which is extra disgusting bc we now KNOW THIS IS DEF BAD. But you gotta be at least in your 30s to be making the level of media pieces like what I’m talking about and showing the long term and in depth level of clear. undeniable. negative. ramifications. for. decades. and. decades. to. come. Like many of these places have been busted and shut down and we just gotta start listening to all survivors so that we once and for all end any practice of facilities like these.

I grew up closeted trans in the 90s in utah. It was and is an industry there. I had already endured a private mormon ran behavior correction program and proto ABA in BD unit for 6 years if public school. Also repentance sessions from when an older child molested me in church. I was absolutely terrified that I'd be shipped to a boarding program. I know people who went to those places and came out SAd and damaged. I absolutely hate the Mormon church.

Yup while these places are everywhere, an industry in Utah in specific is at the heart of it all. The doc I was watching this week well covered the stronggggg connections between these programs and Mormonism.

I think I’ve seen at least 2 other similar series over the years made by survivors who are digging into their memories, files, and pasts to understand, uncover, and process what happened to them. I’m frustrated at the moment bc when I try to find them in searching to link here too, The Program is so popular right now is making that unsuccessful 🤬

Anyway, the levels of disturbing crap here is overwhelming.

I quickly glanced over the wikipedia links for "troubled teen industry" and WHAT THE FUCK.

A lot of these are "residential treatment facilities" for drug addiction and "delinquent" behavior so it's a lot linked to the war on drugs/"tough on crime" policies I guess???

These "Troubled teen programs" have been repeatedly found to use extreme, sickening forms of torture. Like TORTURE torture, like Guantanamo Bay "enhanced interrogation techniques" torture. Several of these programs have killed kids.

And apparently there's a fucking????? Industry????? For private companies that????? Kidnap teenagers from their houses??????????? Like literally fucking zipties and hoods I am not making this up

Oh yeah, the “having your kids kidnapped out of your house at 2am, paying strange men to rip them out of bed screaming at them and throwing them in a van” thing was so popular when I was a teen. (I’m just a tad younger than Paris Hilton.) It was super mainstream enough that like every trash daytime “talk show” like Maury, Jenny, Montel, and Dr. Phil had all kinds of episodes on it. “Help my teenage is out of control!” was an every week kinda episode. It was literally routine entertainment framed as “these shocking out of control teens have forced their families to have no choice left!!!!!”

I don’t remember the shows staying w/ the kids to show what happened beyond the initial attack stuff though. All I know is that it was a day that ends in Y to see people PAYING violent strangers to literally ambush and. Fucking attack their child, dragging them from bed. In the goddamn middle. Of the night!!!!!

Can you imagine the trauma? Some of these kids are like 12.

I’m sure there were adults outraged by this practice but I didn’t know them and I don’t remember any of that side. What I remember in my teen years in the late 90s and early 00s was that this kind of “tough love!!!!” abuse bullshit was heavily normalized. It used to be even more acceptable than now and to lots of parents they’d say it was even ADMIRABLE behavior and they’d do the same if any of us got that “wild.”

OH ALSO LET ME SCREAM THIS IS A $23 BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY

The WWASP programs like in The Program linked above Brainwashed the parents FIRST to get to the kids and their staff was financially incentivized to keep kids in the program as long as possible to get max $$$, which meant getting the kids more “in trouble” aka MORE ABUSE was incentivized bc if you abuse the kids, they act out more, aka they’re in trouble more aka they haven’t “completed the program” yet.
