Here is a (non-exhaustive) list of free resources for different sign languages:

Please feel free to add on if you know of others, be it more resource for one of the sign languages above, or resources for learning any of the other 300 plus sign languages.

Edit: I updated the ASL reference to Bill Vicars, but reminder that these are just things I found around, please find Deaf teachers wherever possible! And for ASL, lifeprint.com is another wonderful resource.

This post is still actively getting notes every day, so I wanted to share a new resource with you: Lingvano. This app is:

  • Free, as far as I can tell
  • Offers lessons from D/deaf teachers
  • Extremely self-paced, built to take in small 5 to 20 minute chunks every day.

The app currently only offers courses in three sign languages: American Sign Language (ASL), British Sign Language (BSL) and Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS).

I will add this to the original post momentarily, but I wanted to put this in a reblog too to raise awareness. I found out about this app from a Deaf content creator, so I really do think it's legit.

If you're applying for office jobs and you're lying about being proficient in Excel (which you always should bc nobody knows anything and google is free) a handy video to give you the basics on Excel's functionality is Joel Sposky's You Suck at Excel Video. It's about an hour long and gives you enough background info to know what people are talking about when referring to Excel, and from there you can do your own further research. There are also handy little guides and notes people have taken on the presentation that go over the highlights here and here <3

ASL Resources For Beginners~

This is for a friend of mine who's asking for some good resources to start learning ASL!

ASL, which stands for American Sign Language, is a beautiful and complex visual language used primarily by Deaf and Hard of Hearing (HOH) people.

As a HOH person myself, I was never given the opportunity to learn ASL and I think it would have been very useful to me growing up if it had been offered to me. The last year and a half, I've been learning it to change that! Here's a series of resources I've used that I've found very helpful in learning ASL!

Alphabet (Slow): YouTube Video that goes through the Alphabet slowly multiple times. I found this video very useful to easily memorize the full alphabet (with practice for a week or so afterwards)! Even though it's catered for kids, I still find it very useful!

ASL Numbers 1-100: A YouTube playlist of multiple videos that teaches you ASL numbers 1-100. If you want a single video that goes through the entire 1-100 numbering, click here. Even though it's catered for kids, I still find it very useful!

The ASL App: A learning app for ASL that you can download on your phone or other electronic device. It has 387 free short videos for beginners in ASL, and 1,633 more short videos with their $10 membership (1 time buy, not monthly). It's a great beginner app, with or without the membership!

20 Beginner Phrases: Here's a video that has a lot of good basic phrases to learn! It teaches you things such as: "Hello" "I'm learning Sign Language" "My name is..." And many more!

ASL 1 Lessons by Bill Vicars: A playlist of YouTube video lessons taught through sign! I would recommend checking these out once you have a bit more of a foundation in vocabulary!

DOs and DONTs of interacting with the Deaf Community: A good video explaining some of the ways you should and shouldn't interact with the Deaf Community when learning or using Sign Language

HandSpeak ASL Dictionary: This is a great database where you can look up how to sign various words!

ASL Fingerspelling Receptive Practice: This website provides a series of short videos of fingerspelled words that you then type out to see if you interpreted it correctly. Its great visual practice! Fingerspelling is an important skill in ASL so I highly recommend practicing as much as possible!

American Sign Language (ASL) Masterlist: A useful Tumblr masterlist with an extensive amount of links for multiple different needs, such as resources, linguistics, and ASL/Deaf websites with videos, news, vlogs, etc.

'ASL Basics' Lessons by Chris Gorges: A playlist of YouTube basics and helpful tips. He gives clear explanations for a series of different concepts, and they really help to build your vocabulary and understanding!

I hope some of you find these resources helpful! Don't forget that one of the best ways to learn sign language is by practicing with other people, ESPECIALLY with someone who's deaf! I might add to this as I find more resources and links that I think would be beneficial! Thanks for reading!💜

𝐊𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫: Verb + 다가 ✏️𝐔𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞 - This expression is used to indicate the speaker’s interruption of one action to immediately start doing another action. -다가 can be shortened to the form -다. E.g. 축구를 하다가 넘어져서 다쳤어요. (I was playing soccer and then I felt and got hurt.) ✏️ 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞 (1) This expression is also used to indicate that the action in the preceding clause continues while the action in the following clause occurs. E.g. 잠을 자다가 꿈을 꾸었어요. (I had a dream while sleeping.) (2) The subject of the preceding and following clauses must be the same. E.g. (내가) 밥을 먹다가 전화가 왔습니다. (X) ᅳ> (내가) 밥을 먹다가 (내가) 전화를 받았습니다. (〇) The sentence is ungrammatical because the subject of 전화가 왔습니다 is 전화. Therefore, the subject is different. (3) This grammar can also be used with some adjectives to indicate the change from one state to another. E.g. 날씨가 맑다가 갑자기 흐려졌어요. (It was sunny and suddenly became cloudy.) ✏️ 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 After removing 다 from the root verb, add ~다가 after the verb stem irrespective of whether the verb stem ends with a consonant or vowel. 먹다 → 먹다가  (I was eating and then…) 일하다 → 일다가 (I was working and then…) ✏️ 𝐃𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 -다가 𝐚𝐧𝐝 -면서, -고 -다가 expresses the interruption of one action to do another action. -면서 expresses that two actions are happening at the same time -고 express the time order (the first action happens and then the second action) E.g. 공부하다가 음악을 들어요. → In the middle of studying, he listened to music. (the action of studying hasn’t finished) 공부하면서 음악을 들었어요. → While studying, he listened to music (the action of studying and listening to music happened at the same time) 공부하고 음악을 들어요. → He studied and then listened to music (the action of studying has finished.) ✏️ 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 1. 아까 낮에 뭐 했니? - 만화책을 읽다가 친구하고 같이 외출했어. (What did you do this afternoon? - I was reading a comic book, but then I went out with a friend.) 2. 어디에 다녀오세요? - 요리를 하다가 파가 없어서 사 왔어요. (Where are you going? - I was cooking, but then there was no onion, so I went out to buy some.) 3. 길을 걸어가다가 갑자기 생각이 나서 전화했어. (I was walking down the street and suddenly thought (of you), so I called.) 4. 중국어를 배우다가 너무 어려워서 포기했어요. (While learning Chinese, I gave up because it was too difficult.) 5. 설거지를 하다가 접시를 깨뜨렸어요. Worldcat is my bestie and my one true love!! Not only does it tell you what library a book is at, but it also price compares different used book sites against each other for easy view! It's how I got Tarot For the Master for $10!!

Oh, and since I have your attention: z-library (books and textbooks) and sci-hub (gatekept scientific journal articles.) I just ripped a textbook for class off z-library and snatched a required reading from sci-hub. Life is good and education should be accessible at every stage and station of life.

Intermediate / Lesson 14: -겠다

안녕하세요 여러분! Hey everyone! A long time ago I made a lesson on the form -겠다, but looking back on it, it’s not a great lesson (I’ve learned a lot about Korean since I started this blog!), so I decided to remake it! Even I’m not that familiar with all of the usages that I list, so any corrections are welcome :) I hope this is helpful!

1. -겠습니다: Expressing Intention

Let’s start with how to use -겠습니다. The first nuance this could have is expressing your intention to do something. It’s usually translated as “I will” in English, but has a stronger nuance than the plain future tense form, -ㄹ/을 거예요. These sentences tend to be more formal-sounding too. I’ve also heard that aside from set expressions like the ones below, this usage is not very common. Let’s see some examples:

  • 잘 먹겠습니다. = I will eat well. / Thank you for the food.
  • You’ve probably heard this expression before – it’s said right before starting a meal when the food is served. This sentence expresses your intention/will to enjoy the food.
  • 열심히 하겠습니다. = I will work hard.
  • You might say this when given a new project/task to do. This expresses your strong intention to work hard at it.

2. -겠어요: Guessing; Assumption

-겠어(요) is a way to use -겠다 less formally. It can express your guess or assumption about the way something is or might be. For example:

  • (from Tammy Korean – I really recommend this video!) 내일 날씨가 좋겠어요. = It looks like the weather is going to be nice tomorrow.
  • The actual sentence that Tammy Korean features is 내일 날씨가 좋겠네요. In my opinion, ending it with -네요 sounds more natural.
  • Here, you’re making a guess that the weather is going to be nice tomorrow. Maybe you watched the weather forecast and saw that it’s going to be warm and sunny.
  • 민지 씨의 고양이는 죽었어요. 너무 속상하겠어요. = Minji’s cat died. She must be so upset.
  • Here, you’re making an assumption about how Minji feels based on what happened.
  • 그 수학 수업은 어렵겠네요. = That math class must be difficult.
  • You’re guessing that this math class is hard. Maybe your friend tells you they’re taking a calculus class, which sounds very complicated.

3. -겠다

-겠다 is similar to the above usage. I’m not sure if there’s much of a difference in nuance, but I think that -겠다 sounds even less formal/polite than -겠어요 (someone correct me if I’m wrong though!). Let’s see some examples:

  • 맛있겠다! = It looks delicious!
  • This is another phrase you’ve probably heard before. It expresses your guess that the food will taste good based on the way it looks.
  • 남자 친구가 생겼어요? 좋겠다! = You got a boyfriend? Lucky you!
  • 좋겠다 here literally means something like “it must be nice,” or even in this particular sentence, “you must be happy.”

4. -아/어/여야 (하)겠다

In my experience, I think I’ve heard this usage the most. It combines -겠다 with -아/어/여야 하다, which means “have to” or “should.” If I were to compare this with just the plain -아/어/여야 하다, I would say it is usually used when you’re talking to yourself, as if to tell yourself you should do something. Here are some examples:

  • 오늘밤 일찍 자야 하겠다. = I should go to bed early tonight.
  • Often, this form omits the 하. This can be shortened to 오늘밤 일찍 자야겠다.
  • 숙제를 지금 해야겠다. = I should do my homework now.
  • You might say this to tell yourself to do your homework.

That’s about it for this lesson! I hope it’s helpful and better than my original lesson lol. As usual, if anyone has any corrections or questions about this grammar point, please let me know! See you in the next lesson! 다음에 또 봐요!

I turn 30 next month so here’s what I learned in my 20s:

—don’t work for startups, they’re always one ‘innovative idea’ away adding ‘sell your kidneys on the black market’ to your job description.

—keeping a collection of basic OTC medicine on you will save your life one day. I recommend Advil, Imodium, and TUMS.

—those little single-use glasses cleaning wipes are 1000% worth the money

—overly self-depreciating jokes just make people uncomfortable, wean yourself off of them

—you can buy dehydrated mini marshmallows in bulk online and they’re a godsend for hot cocoa

—people don’t care if you have fidget toys on your desk they just want to play with them

—try to go to bed BEFORE the existential ennui kicks in

Also drink water and eat a plant

This is all GREAT. I turned 40 last week, so permit me to add what I learned in my 30s:

  • keep on not working for startups
  • sometimes there comes a point where the thing (fandom, hobby, friendship, romantic relationship) you loved no longer brings you joy. And that's okay. Try to mourn the loss, take joy in the memories, and don't burn any bridges in case ten years go by and you find yourself back in that fandom/hobby/relationship again
  • it turns out that (ugh) moderate regular exercise is (spit) good for you. The sooner you make it part of your life, the easier it'll be
  • related: if you throw yourself into a new exercise regime too hard and too fast, without stopping to rest or consider whether a particular move is good for you ... well, shoulder injuries are painful and consults with orthopedic surgeons are expensive
  • knees are bastards too
  • don't even get me started on ankles
  • there may come a time when your digestive system is too fragile for ibuprofin. I'm sorry
  • one day you're gonna wake up and realise you no longer give any fucks about some things that used to bother you
  • on the other hand, you might be alarmed to realise what you still give a fuck about
  • never get down on the floor without an exit strategy for getting back up

Holy fuck

This works best if you keep windows closed.

Another design is using 2 20x25x1 filters, taping them to the sides of the box fan and then to each other so they sort of make a triangle, then cutting cardboard to make a top and bottom to the triangle.

This was discovered as a more effective design during the 2020 US west coast fires.

If you live on the west coast of the United States, fire season is coming and this is vital.

We’ve been using one, and they’re great. Might try to make the double filter version this year.

theyve been doing a bunch of studies on this during the pandemic and this design is best! 4 filters and a shroud to optimize flow rate.
