Ivan and Sua Parallels post-Confession Comic
So the recently posted Confession comic on Twitter hit so hard it made me think again about Ivan and Sua and the narrative parallels between their characters.
It seems that Ivan first found kinship in Sua since they had similar backgrounds. Ivan appeared to have also been heavily abused by his aliens which is the same case with Sua. But from that feeling of kinship or rather because of that feeling, envy and animosity welled up within Ivan when he saw that Mizi reciprocated the love that Sua had.
Ivan had no other frame of reference towards what it feels like to love and be loved except for Sua who he viewed as someone similar to him. The moment he saw the way Sua and Mizi's eyes light up at the sight of each other while he was left gazing by his lonesome at Till, he probably was very devastated. If the last sentence of the comic was anything to go by, Ivan might have thought that the problem with his and Till's relationship lies in himself. He felt as if he was just dragging Till along, that Till was just a victim to a love that Ivan thought meant everything but, in the end, amounted to nothing, at least in his eyes.
He did still think that his sacrifice was better than what Sua did by that very same virtue. He thinks that his love was shallow because it did not reach Till, thus it could never really leave a wound as deep as the one Sua left Mizi. In a way, Ivan has come to a fatalist conclusion about his love. However, I do not think that Ivan thought that his love was a waste. I think he still valued that love, he still valued every moment he spent loving Till, but he has ultimately given up on the prospect of it being worth anything more than just self-gratification.
