the term “tatreez”, literally translated to “embroidery”, is used to refer to a palestinian art form that dates as far back as the canaanite era, approximately 3,000 years ago.

in a practice that started among women in rural communities, bold patterns are constructed primarily out of cross stitches and incorporated into clothing, linens, and more.

these designs are frequently composed of recurring motifs, many drawing from nature or referencing certain storytelling traditions.

in a time when the palestinian people continue to fight off the violent oppression of the illegitimate israeli state, expressing cultural identity and protecting these rich customs from erasure is of utmost importance.

existence is resistance, and art, in its many embodiments, is the preserver of history. millennium later, tatreez is only one of the elements of palestinian identity that speak to the longevity of a people tied to their land. a people whose roots run as deep as those of their beloved olive trees, whose breath is that of the sea air, and whose blood continues to soak the earth as the world looks on.

urvashi & pururavas are figures from hindu literature whose story has several variations, including those in the rigveda & mahabharata. i’ve substituted them here for two 19th-century sapphic indo-caribbean girlies.

it can probably be argued that our particular history has encouraged a greater acceptance of relationships that our cousins from the motherland often see rebuked, such as those that are interracial and/or interfaith. i, unfortunately, don’t think we can say as much for queer individuals & relationships.

though i am proud of my community for many things, i hope that we will one day do right by our our pre-colonial ancestors in our care for *all* of their descendants, regardless of who they are or how they love.
