I Know My Value

It was December 25th, Christmas Day and the Doctor had told Peggy that they could celebrate Christmas together. He arrived at her place at the time they agreed upon with a gift for her in his hands, wrapped with her name on it and knocked on the door. He was excited to celebrate the holiday with his friend.

Peggy opened the door and smiled. "Oh, hello, Doctor!" she said. "I'm glad we could both make it!" Both their lives tended to involve unexpected interruptions. "Please come in, it's supposed to be windy overnight and the temperature's going to drop."

“They don’t,” he told her, looking behind her as he noticed several more explosions, “You can come with me inside this box, or you can stay out here for whatever those are to get you.  Which one seems safer?”  He offered his hand out to the woman he had just met a few moments ago.

Peggy winced as another one went off.  How were they to know that the police box wouldn’t be next?  But for once in her life she didn’t have any better ideas and… well, the young man had a trustworthy face.  She grabbed his hand and stepped up into the box.

The Doctor ran, trying his best to keep up with her. He was really good at running, but she seemed to be a bit better. He could hear leaves starting to crunch below them. “Do you hear that?” the Doctor asked her, “This is perfect. Whatever it is, you might be able to fight it best here since you’d be able to hear it best here with the leaves.”

"If you say so!" Peggy kicked her shoes off, so her own feet would crunch less, and turned around. This was madness, she thought... she was on another planet, about to fight god-knew-what that she couldn't even see! Still, she assumed a fighting stance. They couldn't run forever, and going down fighting was better than not.

“Oh, I know that feeling well,” Peggy sighed, having wandered down to watch some of the new agents training.  In her case, they wouldn’t fight her because they didn’t want to risk hurting their boss… as if she couldn’t have laid them all out on the mats, even at her age.

Melinda smiled a bit at Peggy. Unlike most, she wasn’t intimidate by her. She held a lot of respect for her, knowing what it was like for her when she started having heard stories from her mother and knowing what her mother had gone through as well. “I guess my mother trained me a little too well. Well that and all the martial arts classes my dad let me take growing up.”

“That does give you a leg up,” Peggy agreed.  “Perhaps while the novices practice, you and I ought to have a go?”

“Combat classes are boring when no one is willing to spar against you,” Melinda sighed, shaking her head a little.

"i don't think I can do this all day"

“even with being super soilder.. i don’t know if they believe in me..   is this all for show.. bucky he’s out there fighting … he might now come back” he said softly worried look on his face.   He always wanted to fight.  At least for something he believed in. When he got these powers he was more in shock. if you can call them that. He really thought he would help protect or maybe fight.

“I don’t know what to tell you.  My brother went off to fight, too,” said Peggy.  “He didn’t come back.  When I first got the news I thought it would kill me, too.”  She... still wasn’t so sure it hadn’t.  She felt like a very different person from the Peggy Carter who’d still had a big brother.  “I’m doing what my brother would want me to do.  What would your friend want you to be doing?”

“ you know they try to put me in makeup.. ” he chuckles taking breathe. “ Right I can do this…  feel like I aged 50 years but.. its just smiles and saying thing..” he said softly. Sure it was mostly talking to himself reminder why he did this. “Do you think this his helping.. doing this” he asked Peggy.

That was a difficult question.  They certainly weren’t doing any fighting right now, were they?  “Well... it’s like the films, isn’t it?  It’s something for people to rally around, something to give them hope and make them believe we can win.”

“It’s only a press tour, dear.”

"I don't mind helping out.. but if i have to do the speech again" he said exhausted. "Please teach me your ways.. " he wanted to help maybe fight but this was something new to him. He felt out of place.

“Everybody’s here to see you.  You’re a national hero,” Peggy reminded him.  “Just a few more smiles and then you can turn in early tonight.  Tomorrow we’re flying to Philadelphia, I believe.”  She was also exhausted.  “I’m tired, too, it just doesn’t show because I’m wearing far too much makeup.”

“I’m sure you do,” Perry agreed, putting an arm around her shoulders.  “Unfortunately, in our world almost everyone knows what it’s like to lose family.”  He was silent for quite some time after that.  “Sometimes I want to say it’s a dreadful time to be alive, but none of the alternatives are nice, either.  I can’t let myself go down that hole.”  If he did, he felt he might never climb out again.

She leaned against him and sighed. “That is very true. Though I can say that being alive now has had it’s perks. Like the serum and getting to know everyone.”

“Yes.”  Perry enjoyed the warm weight of her against his shoulder.  “I’m glad I am alive to meet you and the others, and everything else, I’ll just have to bear as best I can.”  He paused.  “Though it does make you wonder what other lives we might have had.”

“It sounds more like something on two feet,” he told her, “Like a human.”

“A human I can fight, but I’d prefer to be able to see. I’m not sure these farmers are quite the nice sorts you thought,” she added dryly.

The Doctor then heard something.  It sounded like a loud roar, almost like an animal and it sounded like it came from the close by two legged creatures.  “I don’t think those are the farmers,” he told her, “I think we should run.”

Peggy took a step backwards when she heard the sound. She automatically reached for her blindfold, but then thought maybe that wasn't a good idea. She reached out and found the Doctor's sleeve, and when he suggested running Peggy didn't hesitate. She had no guidance on where to go except away from the sound, but that was enough. Still holding onto his arm, she ran and dragged him behind her.

“I hope somebody can,” Perry grumbled.  “I suppose it’s because she misses him as much as I do… maybe more, since she knew him longer, as Mike was fond of reminding me.”  He sighed.  “I wish she could find some other source of comfort, though.”

Stacey rubbed his back softly to comfort him. “I can understand how she feels in a way. It can be very painful to lose someone who is that close to you.”

“Yes, they do,” said Perry, reaching up to put his hand over hers.  “Mum’s letters said she was thinking about consulting a psychic medium… I told her Houdini showed they were all frauds twenty years ago.  I hope she has better sense.”  The idea of somebody speaking vague nonsense to Mum and claiming it was on Michael’s behalf made him feel sick.

“Oh god, maybe I can talk with her and help convince her that it’s not a good idea,” she mused with a hum.

“I hope somebody can,” Perry grumbled.  “I suppose it’s because she misses him as much as I do... maybe more, since she knew him longer, as Mike was fond of reminding me.”  He sighed.  “I wish she could find some other source of comfort, though.”

“Are you ok? It’s ok to tell me if you’re not. I won’t tell anyone.”

She listened to him and put a hand on his shoulder. “I promise that we’ll look for him. You deserve that kind of closure. We’ll search for him and for Bucky. They deserve to be buried properly and with honors.”
