What are some good ways to be involved in fandom without reading or writing fic? I've been involved in a few fandoms, always primarily as a fic reader and writer. Recently, however, I've been really interested in K-pop, and while I know there is a big fandom for it that includes plenty of RPF, I'm not exactly comfortable with reading or writing it, at least not yet. How can I stay involved in fandom, while not interacting with the fic? I've been feeling like a "bad fan" recently, because of this

First of all, the only "bad fans" are ones who harass other people. You're totally fine.

Now as to your actual question, there are lots of things that you can do without reading or writing fic. I'll start a list and we'll see what other ideas people add on.

  • Create fanart. Even without drawing skills, you can use tools like Canva to create moodboards or aesthetics for different songs or albums or band members.
  • Create your own playlist and share it. A list of your favourite songs or songs for a particular mood or songs you listen to while cleaning your house etc.
  • Organize a fandom event, like arranging for a birthday card for a band member or a group watch of a streaming concert or interview.
  • If you're multilingual, consider translating interviews into another language so that more fans can know what was said.
  • Make gifsets and share them out.
  • Like and reblog/retweet any of the above things and support your fellow fans in these kinds of endeavors too.

Making rec lists of other people’s fan works (art, fic, playlists, edits, blogs, etc) is also a great way to engage in fandom AND spread appreciation for creators! You can help others find content, talk about content you like and why you like it, find other fans who already like the works you love and talk with them, etc!

People who make good rec lists and fandom guides/organizational pages are severely under appreciated but incredibly important in fandom! How many of you have not known where go start in a fandom, and have used these guides for guidance? How many of you have found your favorite fic author/artist/blog through a rec post? How many of you are creators who have had your work featured on a rec list?

They’re a fantastic way to bring a fandom together!

Talk about it on social media!

I got into fandom through fic, but I mostly write meta about my fandom now. Ways to do that in a music fandom:

  • talk about the lyrics. Maybe a song was really meaningful, or funny. If people reblog and comment, you can reblog again and build on what they're saying. That's how I made several of my friends.
  • talk about the singers. Are they really cute? Gush about it somewhere that isn't too embarrassing. Reblog other people's posts. Make gifsets of their best (or most ridiculous) outfits.
  • follow something that lets you know the latest news. Recent interviews, song releases, etc. get the fandom excited. Reblogging posts about them is a great way to find other fans. See who reblogs from you, and follow the ones who look interesting.
