Not as big and flashy but there are charities such as RIP Medical Debt. They buy up medical debt at discount debt-collector prices but instead of trying to collect, they just forgive it. Donate $10 and you can wipe out $1,000 of someone’s medical debt. This is the only one I know of, but I believe there are others.

Yes, yes, working for Lex Luthor is basically like being an Amazon employee that makes weapons of mass destruction, which is bad. Lex is like Donald Trump mixed with Mark Zuckerberg mixed with Jeffrey fucking Bezos, it’s not a great mix. He does not treat his henchmen well. Their lives still suck, and they are probably monitored on how long they take piss breaks for.

But let’s analyze what working for Lex Luthor is like versus the fucking Joker. With Lex you probably get a dental plan, a health plan, a paycheck, and the guy that you’re fighting really cares about human life. Superman will hit you just long enough to knock you out, so you’re not a treat, so he can stop the problem.

If you work for the Joker, your payment is you’re not fucking dead. You say one wrong thing? Bang. You don’t laugh at his jokes? Bang! You do laugh at his jokes? Bang! You think Joker gives a fuck about a henchman?

Who’s Lex Luthor’s right-hand-man? It’s a woman, you sexist, her name is Mercy, she’s awesome. Who’s Joker’s right-hand-man? Bob? Nah, he’s dead. Harley? Tried to kill her multiple times. Slappy? Who the fuck is Slappy?

The best case scenario of working for the Joker is that you fight the fucking Batman! And that presents its own fucking list of problems. If you stop Superman as a Lex Luthor henchman, Lex’ll be pissed, but he’ll be at least happy that Superman was caught. If you stop Batman as a Joker henchman, you better have a fucking coffin picked out yesterday.

As of July 31, 2021 —

Red Lake Treaty Camp was maced and tear gassed on Friday, July 30.

14 people were arrested Friday, and more were injured (other water protectors were arrested Thursday — at this point just assume daily arrests as people try to stop the drill at Red Lake).

As of midday Saturday, there were verified reports from Pennington County Jail that those water protectors arrested on Friday were being kept in the clothes that had chemical irritants on them and were not being allowed to change.

This is the first time chemical weapons and nonlethals have been used against water protectors in Minnesota. This is a big deal. No one in camp was prepared for it, and no one in camp had proper protective or safety gear. Most camps have to haul water in because they’re remote. Cleaning tear gas off is incredibly difficult when you don’t have access to water, are in a drought, are pinned in, and are trying to keep chemicals off the land and out of the water.

The point of these protests is two-fold and intersecting: 1) Indigenous land rights and 2) protection of the environment. These intersect into protection of indigenous culture, indigenous religion, and indigenous sovereignty.

Introduction of chemical weapons is bad. Really, really bad. This is not an urban setting. Every single one of the water protector camps is on a lake, river crossing, or watershed. Every single camp is at, on, or protecting a critical habitat. That’s the point — to protect the land, to protect the water.

This story just keeps getting worse and worse

Hello, college grad that actually wrote an award winning paper on this topic! Here’s some knowledge I’d like to share: There’s actually been studies as to why it’s usually white kids, a large conclusion amongst the criminology community is that those that often have more privileged lives (white kids in our society’s case) are less adept to dealing with stress and denial. Whereas minorities and others are more likely to cope and function normally despite stressors because of the constant stressors that come from systematic racism and/or other platforms of more limited priviledge.

TL;DR: It’s usually a white kid because their privilege incacipated their ability to learn how to handle stress/ denial/ whatever without acting out. The less privileged are done used to the bs and thus typically dont turn to extreme measures as coping mechanisms.
