Knowing what one does about Requiem Nexum, it may be tempting to assume that all of them are serious and austere morticians. This could not be further from the truth, and Fie is an excellent example of that.

Fie is hilarious. His sense of humor shines through every conversation with him, whether it’s his jokes or snark. It’s indicative of his view on life, that every moment matters and every moment is worthy of celebration. He loves the outdoors, he loves exploring and meeting new people and having new experiences and making his life richer in every single way.

This is due to his work, as he is a ritualist of the Requiem clan, particularly for funerals. When it’s time for him to go to work, his great humor disappears and he becomes incredibly serious. His work is deeply important to him, and he will allow nothing to distract him from tending to souls until they have passed on to their final resting place, or the next life.

His line of work often requires him to travel, going wherever he is needed rather than having people come to him. This leads to him seeing a great deal more of the diverse communities of the Nexum than most get to experience, and he’s happy to share what he’s seen upon his return. After a long shift of ritual funerals, it takes him about a day or so to ruminate and reflect before he’s back to his cheery self.

He’s often the life of the party, and the center of attention no matter where he goes. It’s not that he tries to attract a crowd, but rather that he has a natural magnetism to him that draws people in. The jokes he tells are naturally funny and make people feel at ease, he’s charming with his compliments, and it also doesn’t hurt that he’s good looking. This makes him naturally good at his job, but also makes him feel like someone you can trust and rely on, someone you’d feel comfortable with and know that he would never take advantage of that trust and use it against you.

He’s excellent with kids, and tends to be adopted into families wherever he goes.

Fie is a handsome man, with long dark brown hair that he ties back with leather and sharp green eyes. He has a bit of a hawkish nose that he considerers to be his best feature, and a cheeky grin that exposes sharp teeth. Due to his job being mostly indoors, his skin is a little on the pale side of “olive,” but he’s not quite as pale as some.

Even when he’s not working, he tends to prefer simple clothes without patterns, usually of dyed linens and basic leather shoes. The colors he favors are usually on the darker end of the spectrum: black, gray, brown, green, and navy. When he strays away from this simple “uniform,” his friends often tease him for it. When he’s doing his rituals, he wears a long brown robe with slits up the sides to allow for better movement, tied with a cord around his waist. This usually goes over white linen clothing - similar to scrubs in human culture, and easy to bleach should they get stained.

While the clothes he wears are simple, he loves to accessorize. Wherever he goes he likes to collect little bits of jewelry and other trinkets to decorate himself with, and always has a set of prayer beads either looped around his wrist or draped around his neck. He loves handmade things of all kinds, as he says they carry a bit of the energy and passion in them from the person who worked so hard to create it. Every bit and bauble he owns he remembers where it came from, and a little about the person who made it. He makes it a point to grab something new everywhere he goes, and if the schedule doesn’t allow for it, he gets very depressed. It helps him remember his work, ground him in something physical, and keep the memories of the families he works with close to hand.

He is a very affectionate, charismatic, and affable young man. When asked about what sort of relationship he wants with a human companion, he says that he’s interested in “just about anything,” but is definitely open to a romantic bond. However, he wants it to be clear that he’s not exactly “looking for marriage” right now, and anything serious would have to come with lots of time and conversation for him to be open to it. For the most part, he is just happy for affection, no matter what form it comes in.

Meet Ophion

Ophion, meaning "Serpent"

On first glance, Ophion is the stern and austere stereotype conjured by the name of the Requiem Nexum. He’s tall and thin, almost exclusively wears black robes without any ornamentation, and is prone to frowning so hard it forms creases into his forehead. His hair is long, straight, black, and tied back simply at the nape of his neck, and his skin is quite pale. Sometimes, small children are intimidated by this appearance at first when he is assigned to their care, but they quickly warm up because he’s a very kind and sweet man. 

He is a wonderful listener who never makes it feel as though you’re imposing on him when you start telling him your life story, and his advice is always spot-on. You can tell he’s really listening, not just pretending, and this makes him perfect at his job. 

While his hair hasn’t begun to turn to gray yet, he’s still one of the older members of their order, and others fall in line accordingly with his experience. He runs the shrine he was once lived in as a child, grown from being the kid who sweeps the hallways to being the elder who trains younger Nexum on how to do their rituals and counsel others in their grief. He used to be a ritualist in his younger years, and sometimes he still steps in and takes over for important events, or when he feels like they’re not doing it quite right, or just when he feels a connection to the deceased and wants to help. However, most of the time he prefers to schedule community events, and talk with those in his community who need a shoulder to cry on for a while. 

Most of his day is spent with those who are grieving, but he also runs inventory and settles meal plans, doing whatever needs doing. He is always on his feet, always keeping busy, always pulled in a thousand different directions, and he would never have it any other way. He sees it as a way to keep himself useful, and to give back to the community who has given so much to him. 

Ophion is one of the most well organized people you will ever meet- but he’d have to be in order to keep up with everything he does on a daily basis.

He wears black because it’s easiest to keep clean, either in ritual robes or normal linens depending on his mood or where he’s needed that day. The only “jewelry” he normally keeps on his person is a set of simple black prayer beads given to him when he was a boy that he’d rather repair and reuse time after time rather than just buy something new. Jewelry and other ornamentation just aren’t something that interests him unless he’s buying it as a gift for someone else. His job is important to him, and be believes that if he wears too much flashy clothing, it will distract from what he is trying to do. Some might say it is too important and he should learn to loosen up sometimes, but he doesn’t really heed these suggestions. He says that people who say those things could never understand how fulfilling it feels to help others who are in need, feeling the bonds of their community snap back in place to support them in their moment of grief. It’s thrilling to him.

Even so, there are many who think he’s scary, stuck up, or intimidating. Ophion never does anything to quell these rumors, hoping that they’ll understand when the time comes for them to need support, and thinks his actions should speak for themselves. He is willing to help teach his companion this skill, to let the words of others roll off their back and not pay attention.

Ophion is not open to any kind of romantic relationship with his companion, but he does wish to be a mentor or guide, and hopefully friend as things progress. His companion will see that he is a great anchor for when things get rough, and all he wants to do is help to support them. He hopes that his future companion will have the time for long talks about philosophy with him, or perhaps share their reading with him. Of all of human literature, he is the most curious about memoirs and histories, especially of the sort regarding human funerary traditions and the ways they are both similar and not to those of the Nexum.

There are few with a more soothing presence, despite the “spooky” visage he might have. It is well worth it to get to know this enigmatic man, and much can be learned from his stories about his experiences of his life.
