“Dragon” is such a vague category of creature with such a ridiculous diversity of bauplans. It doesn’t matter how big it is or how many legs it has or whether it has wings or not: you can call it a dragon if it is kind of snakey, and/or breathes fire (virtually anything that can breathe fire has the potential to qualify as a dragon).

Case in point, look at all these different things that are dragons:

By the same token we haven’t examined whether “unicorn” can be as broad a category as “dragon.” A lot of creatures across many cultures have been called unicorns, and are described as being shaped variously like horses, goats, deer, and cattle, among other things.

White unicorns are overrepresented in media, but unicorns can be any color. Winged unicorns are not as popular but are just as qualified. Look at this powerful, oxlike winged unicorn from the Apadana in Iran next to its fellow winged unicorn Twilight Sparkle.

Unicorns do generally seem to be ungulates. Which raises the question: is any one-horned ungulate a unicorn? How about a rhinoceros? Some rhinos have a single horn. The scientific name of the Indian rhinoceros is even Rhinoceros unicornis. Since unicorn literally just means “one horn,” I think a rhinoceros with a single horn is definitely a unicorn, and therefore the extinct elasmotherium is a unicorn.

Qilin (麒麟) may or may not be ungulates but they are often considered unicorns despite being very scaly. And since term “unicorn” does literally just mean “one horn” … why stop there ……. if unicorns can be scaly, huge, and extinct, is centrosaurus a unicorn? I think centrosaurus can be a unicorn if it wants to be a unicorn. It may not have hooves, but some qilin don’t have hooves, either.

Fuck it, you know what? Unicorn.

Flemish giant bunflower

Call it Lock Down Madness but I was so taken by the sketch and overall idea of a bunflower by the talented @dimespin​ that I was inspired into making one. The topology called to me. Sadly it’s been… a while since I’ve tried my hand at sewing a monster…

The ears are wired for pose-ability. Lost the pale tummy in the madness of trying to make my drafted pattern work (involved inverting left and right sides as well as front and back mid-way through). Finished over the course of two weekends, it sits and looks quite cute in a slapdash sort of way. Hard to see in the photos (that ear fabric does not photograph well/flatteringly) but the two blue eyes are there still.

Almost all pet rats (unless they're descended directly from specific lab rats) are infected with Mycoplasma pulmonis, which is a species-specific bacteria that inhabits the lungs. It is passed from mother to young shortly after birth and by direct contact with other rats, so it is near impossible to irradicate. Laboratory rats were freed of this disease when a pregnant rat was submerged in disinfectant while the babies were born via C-section, sacrificing the mother. Most laboratory rats today are descended from rats that had this procedure. This particular mycoplasma usually remains asymptomatic unless exacerbated by stress, poor ventilation, or secondary infection. Here's a good source if anyone would like to know more:

Rats are also an animal fully capable of empathy to the point of selflessness. We're talking like, rats will "donate" treats and food to even rats they don't know (as in, outside of their community) if they have noticed said stranger has less to go by on.

They also have a vocal "language" too and converse with each other, including conveying emotion--just, along with the laughter they make when they are tickled as mentioned by Key, it is in a pitch humans cannot normally hear. Also a factor in why they're easily trained to recognize their names, and learn tricks on command well.

Also, like crows, rats love playing well into adulthood and have fun for the sake of fun. In fact, an experiment had some rats learn how to play hide and seek and they genuinely loved it, jumping in joy and laughing (see prior) when finding their handler or being found, even goading chases.

WHAT THE FUCK IS UP GUESS WHO ISN’T COMPLETELY DEAD YET.

I haven’t really had the gusto to do much except play games [namely pokemon or animal crossing, but FFVII also came out and I’ve been pretty engrossed in reliving my childhood. But I’ve got a few things to share.

Like… Kazzi’s new outfit concept. Still based on Banette, but more mega, I guess. We’ll see what I come up with. She cut her hair again for Galar, though. Guess it got in the way too much.

I found a ‘Draw The Squad’ image and had to do it. Apparently it’s accurate enough.

My Animal Crossing file is frequently ‘Karlos’, and thanks to like every fucking feature to change your look on a whim, he’s back to his disguises and wearing dresses all the time. The more obnoxious it is, the more he likes it. He’s also collecting every color of sneaker.

Oh yeah, guess he and Terry also decided they’re polyamorous and brought in Ana, who’s been with them since they started their Rocket career anyways. Constant gifting of love and gratitude isn’t uncommon here. Ana will cherish her fucking luvdisc forever.

How I draw eyes

This is the thing I get asked about the most so here’s an honest try.

Varying Your Body Types

I think it’s very important for artists to vary the types of bodies they draw! Not only does it add visual interest and diversity, but different body types can enhance your characters! (Plus it’s more realistic; when was the last time you walked down the street and everyone had the same body type?) I know I have a hard time drawing different bodies, especially with men, so I’m making this tutorial to teach myself as well (I’ve heard the best way to cement learning something is to teach someone else).

So! Bodies! I’m going to use women for this tutorial because I feel they have more variety in their bodies. One of the most obvious ways bodies differ is in their amount of fat.

On average, people store fat mostly in core areas like the bust, the waist, and the hips. It is important to remember that people gain and lose weight differently, and this is true no matter how fat or skinny one gets. However, these are common places people store fat:

The face and neck can be immediate indicators as to how much fat the rest of the body has; when someone loses or gains weight, it’s initially obvious in the face. This is possibly because the eye is (usually) drawn first to the face.

In addition to differences in the amount of body fat, bodies vary vastly in their proportions. The two main ways they differ is skeletally and in fat distribution. The hip to shoulder ratio is skeletal, and someone with wider shoulders might look more powerful or masculine, and someone with wider hips might look more grounded or feminine.

The torso to legs ratio is also a skeletal ratio. Someone with long legs in comparison with their torso might look taller than someone of the same height with a long torso, and they might also look skinnier.

(I say as I finally get some visual variety all up in here.)

Because the hips are also one of the places with the most weight gain in women, large hips can also be a matter of fat distribution. The three main places where the fat ratio really matters is in the bust, the waist and the hips (making up the core of the body).

While men usually carry weight in the belly area, the fat distribution can really vary with women. Some women carry more weight in the bust, some in the belly, and some in the hips/thighs. Some women carry more weight in two areas, like the bust and the hips, the bust and the belly, or the belly and the hips. Some women show no obvious bias to any area and carry weight equally.

Taking into account skeletal ratios, fat distribution patterns, a vast human weight range, muscle tone and age, there are endless permutations of body types. It would be a shame if you used only one!
