i think some of you dont like narratives or stories or characters i think you just like fanfiction tropes

protagonists can and will be sexist, racist, insensitive, cruel, stupid, etc, especially towards the beginning of a story. these are called character flaws and they are a surprise tool that will lead to narrative fulfillment later

And you can use their reality to keep them calm if they are panicking! We had a husband who was always panicking trying to find his wife. Telling him she had passed away was not an option, but through the family we figured out their routine and could tell him not to worry, that she was at the salon or getting coffee with MaryAnne and would be home soon. It calmed him down, stopped him from trying to climb out of windows looking for her, and kept him in his own reality.

If you are working with dementia patients and they aren't your family, try to get small details from the family that can help!

We had an older gent who was always wanting to get in his car and drive off so we would tell him his car was in the workshop. Eventually someone came up with a car of a make and model he’d owned that was non-working so we parked it up in the garden and he used to get in and sit happily behind the wheel and go for ‘drives’ - he even used to give other residents lifts to wherever they thought they were going.

Trying to orient someone with dementia is cruel in the short term and ultimately pointless. You’ll only upset them by trying to tell them the truth and they’ll have forgotten in an hour and be asking after the same long dead people again. My mother has worked in dementia care for over 25 years and will often tell families “So-and-so is happy in their dementia world”

[ image id: a screenshot of an answer to a question regarding dementia. the question asks “how do i answer my dad with dementia when he talks about his mom and dad being alive? do i go along with it or tell him they have passed away?” the answer, written by david mcphee (ph.d. psychologist, therapist) is as follows:  “enter into his reality and enjoy it. he doesn’t need to be ‘oriented’. thank god the days are gone when people with advanced dementia were tortured by huge calendars and reminders signs and loved ones were urged to ‘orient’ them to bring them to some boring reality. if dad spends most of his time in 1959, sit with him. ask him questions he didn’t have time for before. ask about people long dead, but alive to him, learn, celebrate heritage. his parents are alive to him. learn more about your grandparents. if he tells the same story over and over, appreciate it as if it’s music, and you come back to the beautiful refrain. this isn’t ‘playing along to pacify the old guy’, this is an opportunity to communicate and treasure memories real but out of time.”  / end id ]

BDS added this section to their boycott page and I think people really need to read it:

please remember, pushing unorganized boycotts without carefully fact-checking every company in the list can be actively HARMFUL to the boycott movement.

hope you don't mind me adding: here's a list from the website about which companies to target our boycotts at right now:

everyone please read this and share if you can.

Brazil is going through one of the worst climatic crisis ever seen.

i live in the southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul. we have been suffering from extreme, nonstop rainstorms for a week now. the rivers are flooding, reaching 4-6 meters above their natural level. people are being rescued by helicopters, neighborhoods are being evacuated. entire cities are slowly but surely becoming submerged in water. 60 people missing and counting. 32 deaths and counting.

and this is not new. last november also had a flood like this one. 50 dead, many material losses. it happened again this january, with thousands being left without power or water for days.

three catastrophical disasters within less than a year. three disasters only a few months apart.

this is not natural.

unsustainable agricultural practices and politics led to this. a complete disregard for nature led to this. greed led to this. always greed.

when it comes to the climate crisis, i cannot stress this enough: we need to act now if we still want to live. disasters like this are going to happen more often and they're going to be much, much worse. this flood is being considered the worst climatic catastrophe in the history of my state. i don't know how long it will take for another bigger one to happen and take its place. i just know it will be sooner than it should.

Thanks, I was looking for a link I could share with non-brazilians.

Folks, this is serious. Right now we have 317 out of 497 cities in Rio Grande do Sul submerged, and it just. Doesn't. Stop. Raining. This is a state equivalent in area to the country of Equator that is now under water. It is a colossal tragedy.

People there are trying to rescue their neighbours the way they can, but most just don't have the adequate resources to do it.

There are many people trapped on their roofs asking for help on TikTok and Twitter, and the water level just keeps rising and taking everything with it.

We have kids, elders, animals drowning. There are more than 100.000 people homeless, and lots of injured, disappeared and dead. There's been stories of volunteers finding dead bodies (including babies) floating in the water during rescues, so the number of deaths will rise.

We're doing what we can, but all help is welcomed, for real. If you can spare some, we thank you.

If you're specially in first world countries, even small quantities can help a lot.

Like, 5 dollars are now more than 25 reais. That can buy quite a hearty meal for a person, at the very least (reallistically, way more than that). Same thing for euros and pounds, small quantities for you can become huge quantities for these people.

Anyways thanks for listening. If you guys can share, it would also be valuable. I posted pictures because I think it helps to see what's actually happening.

Anyways. I've already sent some money and will try to get to a group that's taking donations from Ceará to there tomorrow.

Força aos gaúchos. Keep hanging on there. We're trying to send as much help as we can.

Updating this: we are now at 417 out of 497 cities affected. That's more than 80% of the state.

People in Porto Alegre, the capital city, are posting desperate bids for water, which has now become scarce, since the water treatment facilities are mostly submerged and most of what's left is contaminated.

It's still raining and the forecast for the next days is more rain and colder weather.

Also, wild animals have started to show up in the cities. Including alligators, swimming through the flood water.

that comment about how you should not borrow grief from the future has saved me multiple times from spiraling into an inescapable state of anxiety. like every time i find myself thinking about how something in the future could go wrong i remember that comment and i think to myself: well i never know, it might get better. it might not even happen the way i think it will and if it does happen and it is sad and bad ill be sad about it then, when it happens. and it’s somehow soo freeing

I need this reminder today.

the “cannibalism is inherently sexual and about love and so hot” crowd somehow turns out to be very put off when a rap song has the word pussy in it

“shake that ass bitch” on a trap beat seems to be just a little too much for blogger who spends 7 hours of their day writing omegaverse fanfic porn

“be gay do crimes” chanter suddenly very upset reading lyrics on genius dot com about someone making and dealing drugs

theres a billion rap songs that have nothing to do with sex and drugs and violence (not like racist ass tumblr users are using this excuse for legitimate reasons) but more importantly lets not pretend like sex and drugs and violence arent awesome
