permanent, intolerable uncertainty

@theoreticalwitchcraft / theoreticalwitchcraft.tumblr.com

Hi. I'm Silvia. I come from Italy. Sometimes I write dumb stuff no one wants to read. I change fandoms too often for my own good. I’m a witch. It’s what we do. When it’s nobody else’s business, it’s my business.

It REALLY is fucking funny how there is genuinely a distinct third faction in AI discourse on this site that is not "Pro-AI" but "The anti-AI crowd is talking about divine sparks of creativity and shit and I'm not about that"

"It's x's home race because he drives for an Italian team" "Its y's home race because he speaks Italian" WRONG. It's Yuki Tsunoda's home race because he literally lives 15km from the track and the nonnas in town call him Yukino

It's also Yuki's home race because last year he went to shovel away the mud after the Emila Romagna flood with all the other local volunteers

the thing is the king charles portrait is genuinely incredible and exactly how I would execute a portrait of a member of the british royal family but also I literally cannot fathom why the british royal family would have it made

like yeah if I were going to make a portrait of king charles I would absolutely have just his smugly smirking face leering out of a mass of red that could only be read as blood and gore, and have his military uniform fading ambiguously into the same background to lay bare the brutality of imperialism concealed by the pomp and ceremony of the british state, and make the entire thing sort of look like it was decaying to indicate the rot of the empire. like I really struggle to imagine a better visual metaphor for the nightmarish history of a dying empire than the king's spiffy military uniform and saber and sash and rows of epaulets being literally made out of a rotting field of blood and gore. but like why did he have it commissioned... why did he have it MADE and then say Looks great I'm putting it on the wall... HE EVEN LOOKS LIKE HE'S IN HELL

i cannot believe not one single editor of this litfic novel managed to think through the consequences on pacing & character voice of not only having extremely close themes shared between the three separate povs but also of having extremely similar story beats happen in adjacent chapters in the novel.

a weird thing is that we got waves of people going "who cares if its cringe or youre annoying! have fun!" but no one really learned how to accept the fact that some people will find you annoying or think your art or your work or posts or anyrhing sucks and thats ok. rather it just became a weird "if people think youre annoying theyre just morally bad. let people enjoy things!". like no i think this yes man only biome sucks and people are allowed to not like artstyles and shows and media and other things

if youre an artist, a creator, or just someone whos involved in hobbies: learning that no matter what you do, some people will find you annoying is extremely important for your mental health, just as learning that not liking things is normal and youre allowed to do it

as people have mentioned in the tags, i think this yes-man attitude leads more people to make up random moral reasons to dislike things. if disliking something for no reason is bad, then you have to constantly justify yourself as to why this thing sucks, which is also not mature and sucks

there is no 'base accent' so like all of this is entirely subjective tbc, just based on what people around you say and how you think you sound

pick whichever language you want to answer in if you're multi-lingual

I have no strong opinions regarding the correct length for spaghetti, but I can't help but feel that folks who insist they have to break their spaghetti because otherwise it won't fit in the pot are fundamentally misunderstanding the nature of pasta.

If you've brought the water to a rolling boil before adding the pasta (which you should do anyway), it's only going to take about twenty seconds for it to soften enough to fold the remaining length into the pot. A discrepancy of twenty seconds in cooking time between one end of the noodle and the other isn't going to make a noticeable difference.

every day Israel is committing atrocities I don't think it's reasonable to argue that these are being timed to coincide with US media events in order to distract people you can say they did this during the super bowl and that during the met gala but they have been doing the same thing every other day they don't need to time it with a distraction bc unfortunately the vast majority of americans are not paying any attention anyways

Huge shout to my friend from an undergraduate philosophy program who started working out every single day, not for health benefits or to become conventionally attractive or whatever, but because -- and this is a direct quote -- he was concerned that otherwise he might "become lost in the world of signs and forget the things they signify". I have thought about this every single time that I've worked out since.

“Dogs don’t know what they look like. Dogs don’t even know what size they are. No doubt it’s our fault, for breeding them into such weird shapes and sizes. My brother’s dachshund, standing tall at eight inches, would attack a Great Dane in the full conviction that she could tear it apart. When a little dog is assaulting its ankles the big dog often stands there looking confused — “Should I eat it? Will it eat me? I am bigger than it, aren’t I?” But then the Great Dane will come and try to sit in your lap and mash you flat, under the impression that it is a Peke-a-poo… Cats know exactly where they begin and end. When they walk slowly out the door that you are holding open for them, and pause, leaving their tail just an inch or two inside the door, they know it. They know you have to keep holding the door open. That is why their tail is there. It is a cat’s way of maintaining a relationship. Housecats know that they are small, and that it matters. When a cat meets a threatening dog and can’t make either a horizontal or a vertical escape, it’ll suddenly triple its size, inflating itself into a sort of weird fur blowfish, and it may work, because the dog gets confused again — “I thought that was a cat. Aren’t I bigger than cats? Will it eat me?” … A lot of us humans are like dogs: we really don’t know what size we are, how we’re shaped, what we look like. The most extreme example of this ignorance must be the people who design the seats on airplanes. At the other extreme, the people who have the most accurate, vivid sense of their own appearance may be dancers. What dancers look like is, after all, what they do.”

This paragraph went in so many different directions before it ended. What the fuck Ursula

I hate when an artist gets exposed for being a bad person and people start the narrative “why would you even want to listen to their shitty music” when are we going to be freed from the idea that only good people create good art and bad people create bad art. It just makes it harder for these types of people to be exposed because now you got people thinking “how is this possible, his music is so good!”

more controversial (for tumblr at least) addition to this - the argument that “people should have known based on the subject matter of the songs” is also extremely unhelpful. Songs can be fictional and cathartic depictions of bad emotions or thoughts and I don’t think they should be used as evidence that someone is bad. If that subject matter makes you uncomfortable especially given hindsight that’s one thing, but I don’t think that should be confused with “evidence” or a sign “people should have known”. I think this line of thinking just ensures artists are going to make much more boring music
